http://scientificlinux.org - grab their 6.0 release and live with it for a
decade or so. Note that CentOS hasn't gotten to 6.0 yet, SL has a similar
approach but (a) makes it easy to have site customization, and (b) may get
things out sooner, due to using paid staff rather than volunteers.

WEP key selection in GNOME
by Ed Greshko
In GNOME 3 I could find no way to select which WEP key to use (1-4). I
suppose I could manually edit the file in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. But, am I missing something? In KDE it
is simple to select.

One option is "yum groupinstall xfce". Or, kde. KDE, though, is huge.
If you need applets, and xfce's has replacement applets that work for you,
this would be the best option. Instead of gnome-terminal, which loses its
mind with xfce, xfce's Terminal is a virtual clone.
This morning's file-roller update, apparently, fixed it so it comes up
automatically upon login if you set it via tweaks to manage the desktop.
That's a much smoother experience. If it were the default when updating from
gnome 2, it would somewhat lessen the culture shock. And enable the
minimize/maximize window buttons, by default, via tweaks too. Really,
there's absolutely no good reason to turn them off, except for religious
ones. The real estate is wasted anyway, nothing gets lost by turning them
back on.
With gnome-shell-extensions-alternative-status-menu, gnome-shell-extensions-
places-menu, and gnome-tweak-tool, with maximize/minimize and automatic file-
roller enabled in tweaks, I'd estimate that brings me to about 75% parity
with gnome 2. What's missing are the applets, a comparable selection of
applets, a customizable startup sound, customizable compiz desktop effects,
and input interface customizations. Also, I can't find the settings to
configure input focus to follow the pointer, and window autoraise on focus
gain. It's working for me, so I either inherited them from gnome2, the
underlying code is still there but the UI is gone; or this is the default
for gnome3. If so, forcing this on everyone is no better than not having it
at all.

gnome-shell update removes shutdown/hibernate ?
by Alexander Volovics
Anybody notice that the gnome-shell-3.0.2-1 update cancels
the effects of:
-gnome-shell-extensions-drive-menu
-gnome-shell-extensions-alternative-status-menu
Does this mean that each update of gnome-shell also
makes updating the extensions necessary?

local IMAP server
by Lewis NH2
Good Evening,
I have a SOHO, and I like to access/answer my emails from every
workstations. Of course everything should be kept up-to-sync.
Furthermore, I'd like to avoid storing all emails on my ISP. Having a
local IMAP server and fetching automatically the emails from my ISP
sounds quite promising at first glance.
I plan to go for fetchmail to retrieve the email from the ISP and
dovecot to provide the local IMAP server. Now I am a bit unsure about
the setup. As far as I can see, it seems that most solutions found on
the net involves a 3rd agent, for instance procmail.
Is it possible to go only with fetchmail and dovecot? If I understood
correctly, dovecot comes up with a LDA that can be directly evoked
from fetchmail using the mda directive. Is this correct?
Does someone have succeed in setting such configuration up?
As I am a noob regarding emails servers technology, any help, advice,
pointers would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Lew.

Samsung 2525w F15 installation problem
by linuxnutster@videotron.ca
Hello,
I purchased a samsung 2525w printer and installed it without a hitch in
fedora 12. Please note there appears to be no ppd file for this printer,
but a 3-part driver download. Everything worked fine in F12; however,
this is not the case in F15. Below are the error messages I get when
attempting to install:
[root@localhost Linux]# sh install.sh
**** It seems Qt library is not installed, or X display is not accessible.
**** Custom Qt library will be configured for use with this package.
GUI mode installer execution failed, proceeding in text mode
**** Running text mode install
**** Press Enter to continue or q and then Enter to quit
I then press enter to continue and get this response:
**** Non-priviliged users found:
nfsnobody
**** Are you going to use USB-connected devices ?
**** If yes, users allowed to scan or manage printers should be added to lp
**** group. The list of non-privileged users proposed for addition is
shown above.
**** Press y and then Enter to add users or Enter to leave lp group intact:
I then press "y" and "enter" and get this response. I shortened the list
to reduce clutter:
**** Print drivers for the following device models available:
ML-2010spl2 ML-2150ps ML-2150spl2 ML-2240spl2 ML-2245spl2 ML-2250spl2
ML-2510spl2 ML-2525w
**** Please enter model to install and press Enter:
Once I enter the model number and press enter, gnome crashes and I end
up back at the login screen.
When I repeat the same step and simply hit "enter" the leave lp group
intact and once again choose the model number and hit enter there is a
quick flash of text in konsole about something installing ( possibly
sane backends ) and poof...same result...gnome crashes and I end up back
at the login screen. The same thing happens from KDE
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did some googling and saw others
with the same issue in other distros, but no concrete solutions. Please
note that I am not an extremely experienced Linux user.
