evolution: how to trace the prob?
by Hiisi
Hi, folks!
I'm having difficulties accessing my mail using evolution. I'm on VPN
and have to use specific proxy to access the web. However mail server
requires no proxy. Using the same settings thunderbird works and
evolution hangs up on checking for new mail. When I press Send/Receive
button a new window appears. It tries to connect to pop-server and
status is always 'waiting'. It's still responsible but does nothing:
no network activity.
What steps should I do to locate the problem?
TIA

Paperless office... document management ? (High speed scanner)
by linux guy
So... our home office is growing and we are getting swamped by paper.
Invoices, receipts, billing records, printed correspondence, etc.
We are thinking of buying a high speed multi purpose
printer/scanner/copier/fax machine, specifically the Dell 3335DN. One
of its selling features is the ability to scan a stack of paper (via its
paper feeder) into jpeg or pdf format at speeds up to 25 pages per
minute.
While scanning most of the paper in our office will eliminate the
physical paper, how do we manage the documents once they are on a
computer ?
At the very least we need a way to search the generated documents by one
or more keywords. Thus far, the best solution I have come up with is to
put together a small database program using Open Office, like this:
http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/tutorials/openoffice-org-base-no-frills-docume...
However, it would be really nice to take it a step further and tie a
ToDo list and scheduler into the system and maybe even an accounting
system. Ie, we scan a receipt into the system and then enter the
accounting transaction for the receipt and tie the two together. Or
create a ToDo item with a link to the image of the document that needs
to be handled.
Has anyone done anything like this ? How should we proceed ?

Yum query
by Timothy Murphy
When I run "sudo yum update" I get a small number of errors like
----------------------------------
Error: Package: xine-lib-1.1.19-22.fc14.i686 (@atrpms)
Requires: libfusion-1.4.so.0
Removing: directfb-1.4.11-2.fc14.i686 (@updates)
libfusion-1.4.so.0
Updated By: directfb-1.4.11-3.fc14.i686 (updates)
Not found
Available: directfb-1.4.3-1.fc14.i686 (fedora)
libfusion-1.4.so.0
----------------------------------
I know I can (and do) yum-update by adding --skip-broken .
But I'd be interested to know how I should deal with this error.
Is there documentation covering this kind of question?
If I try "yum remove xine-lib", yum asks to remove 330MB of files,
including a whole raft of KDE applications.
I must have installed xine-lib from atrpms at some time in the distant past;
the repo is not currently enabled, and hasn't been for months if not years.

USB Samsung SCX-5530FN printer not recognized
by Richard A Hogaboom
Fedora versions previous to 14 recognized the SCX-5530FN. Since there
is no way to manually prod the system to load drivers, how to proceed?
If there were an option in the "Automatic Bug Reporting Tool" to first
enter the unrecognized printer model and then have the bug tool collect
all the necessary info and report it, this would be great.

To: Fedora Ambassadors Mailing List
<ambassadors(a)lists.fedoraproject.org>, Fedora Design Team Mailing List
<design-team(a)lists.fedoraproject.org>
Today we announce the Fedora Sound SIG. Our goal is to create free (as
in freedom) Sound themes and make them available in the Fedora
repositories.
Fedora has a huge selection of Software, but lacks a good selection of
sound themes. We want to fix that issue, by creating free, high-quality
sound themes, and make them easily installable in Fedora. All themes
will be created only with free software that is available on Fedora.
We need help!
We need help from anyone who can help us achieving this goal. Musicians,
Packagers, Developers, Contributors with good ideas, testers, and more.
Join now to #fedora-sound at irc.freenode.net!

USB Thumb Drive Installation
by Stephen P Molnar
I am considering returning to Red Hat, actually Fedora, after quite a few
years of using SuSE/OpenSUSE. However, before taking down my main platform,
which my wife uses for surfing, I'd like to test Fedora 14 on my laptop.
This raises another consideration in that I use the laptop for consulting
and don't want to endanger the Win 7 OS.
What I have done is install (transfer(?)) Fedora 14 to a 8GB SanDisk USB
Thumb Drive. At this point I can boot the laptop from the Thumb Drive and
start the Fedora installer. I want to install Fedora on the Thumb Drive
without modifying the laptop MS Win 7 boot process.
Now, finally my questions. The installer gives me the option of installing
Fedora on the following partitions:
/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2
/dev/sdb1
/dev/sdc1
Am I correct in assuming the Thumb Drive is /dev/sdc1? Will the Win 7 boot
loader be modified by the Fedora installation?
I have attempted searching the list archive without success. Any assistance
will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

2560x1600 display issue. (x11?, nvidia 8800 GTS, hdmi, dvi-d, Dell U3011)
by linux guy
I received the Dell U3011 monitor today, which has a native display
resolution of 2560x1600.
I have an HP HDX9494 with an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS video card in it
that I am using to drive it.
The user manual for the U3011 is here
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/MONITORS/U3011/en/ug/about.htm
The specs for the HDX9494 is here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01490775&tmp_task=pr...
Info on the Geforce 8800 GTS is here
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_8800.html
http://www.nvidia.com/page/8800_tech_specs.html
The problem is that I can't get the laptop to HDX9494 to drive the U3011
at 2560x1600.
The U3011 has several inputs, HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI (Dual link) and
VGA.
According to the manual, the "highest preset resolution" of the monitor
when using the HDMI input is 1920x1600 @ 60 Hz. The "highest preset
resolution" is 2560x1600 for DVI and DisplayPort inputs.
The HDX laptop does not have a DVI or DisplayPort output. It does have
an HDMI port.
According to the GF8800 documentation, it has two dual link DVI ports
that support 2560x1600.
The HDMI wiki tells me that HDMI 1.3 should support 1560x1600@ 24 bits
at 75Hz. HDMI 1.3 was released in 2006 and the HDX was built in 2008.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
When I connect the HDX to the U3011 HDMI port using a High Speed HDMI
cable, the maximum resolution I am able to select from the configuration
software is 1920 x 1200.
When I connect the HDX to the U3011 DVI port using a High Speed HDMI
cable and a dual link HDMI to DVI adapter, the maximum resolution I am
able to select from the configuration software is 1600 x 1200
I have tried this with both the proprietary nvidia driver and the
nouveau driver.
I have tried manually editing the xorg.conf file with various modelines
to no avail.
When I run the nvidia-setting software and look at the properties of the
display, it shows a dual link connection for the built in 1680x1050
display and a single link connection for the HDMI device.
How do I get my HDX to drive the U3011 at 2560x1600 ?
Is this a hardware problem or a software problem ?
Does the nouveau driver use the xorg.conf file the way the proprietary
driver does, ie does it use modelines ?
Thanks !
