Thanks Gabriel,
a) I didn't know these 2 ways of getting at what was installed, they'll
be a great help in the future!
b) it appears that about the only thing that might have caused problems
is an install of kernel-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 & its associated
bits... (I'd downloaded the 2 xorg packages on 5 April & as far as I can
remember I hadn't rebooted since then....)
I'd been trying to get "enough stuff" to be able to play Windoze
compatible CDs & DVDs so maybe something in there bit me!
Anyway, thanks for your input, I'm back to a working system again & with
a number of tricks to keep me going for a while!
Cheers
Dave

Hi Chris....
The nearest I can do to a "normal boot" is to start in init 3 to the
cli, which gives in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
Everything is normal down to the last 3 or 4 lines
481.125] (EE) No devices detected
Fatal service error
No screens found
BTW, during boot, if I press esc, the list of processes(?) started runs
fine down to (I think) Smartd then hangs on that line & jumps off to the
CLI......
Thanks for your help!!

How to access my BlackBerry
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi,
I am trying to access my BlackBerry Bold 9780 from my Fedora 14
default GNOME desktop so I can copy some music and ring tones to it.
But when I plug it in nothing happens. However, my normal USB Key and
external hard drive work perfectly; when connected they are mounted
and Nautilus displays their contents.
I can see my phone is attached.

Can't resume from hibernate with FC14
by Eric B.
Hi,
I just installed FC14 on an older Dell Inspiron 8500 with an NVidea
GeForce4 graphics card. To get the graphics working properly, I had to
uninstall nvidia-nouveau driver and replace it with the rpmfusion nvidia
drivers as per http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=204752.
Unfortunately, neither the suspend or hibernate seem to work. They both
manage to shutdown the PC, but when the time comes to resume, the system
does not boot back up properly; it freezes at a black screen. I do see
a couple of error messages, and the caps lock/num lock buttons freeze.
The only option is to cold boot the machine at this point.
I can't see anything particularly special in /var/log/messages, and am
not sure if there are any other files that may have additional information.
The error messages I get when going into hibernate mode are as follows:
pm_op(): pci_pm_thaw +0x0/0x59 returns -16
PM: Device 0000:00:00.0 failed to thaw: error -16
Can anyone help steer me in the right direction? I have no idea what
those error messages mean. I am extremely frustrated, and it is
becoming increasingly difficult to work with a laptop that I cannot
hibernate as I take it back and forth to the office every day.
Thanks!

How to install Fedora&Ubuntu with encrypted VG's on one disk?
by johhny_at_poland77
I installed a Fedora 14 first, then an Ubuntu 10.04. I installed them using dm_crypt/aes256/lvm, so i used encrypted VolumeGroups. ok.
At the end of the ubuntu install it said it cannot install GRUB...ok
So i had to use SuperGRUBdisk to start Fedora&give out the command: "grub-install /dev/sda", OK! now i can boot to fedora normally, without using supergrubdisk..
But: the problem is, that i can't boot to ubuntu!
Q: Is there any working way to install Fedora 14 & Ubuntu 10.04 using (separated) encrypted VolumeGroups? (each volumegroup with other password)..so that 2 users (who knows the root passwords of their own distro) can use 1 pc? (so that they cannot see each others files..)
Thanks..

Re: Separate /usr partition
by Gene Poole
If possible, I'd like to jump in on this conversation about a separate
/usr partition. I work for a large corporation and we run multiple
platforms (AIX, HP-UX, RHEL, Solaris) and most, if not all, of our servers
not only have separate partitions, but separate file systems. If you are
using LVM, the use of separate file systems make for much easier space
management ( if /usr starts to run out of space, we get alerted and all we
have to do is extend the /usr logical volume). On RHEL, the default disk
definition is /boot; / (root); and swap. So we just took it one step
further and split up the root directory and file system. And by splitting
it up, you can put the different file systems on different disk
allocations (raid-0; raid-1; raid-5; etc.) depending on their uses. If
you take the default disk definitions and then add, say, oracle database
you get oracle mixed in with the OS. Is this something you really want?
This also allows you to move file systems to SAN devices without an
outage, under VMware.
Thanks,
Gene Poole

Ace Aspire One And New Broadcom Drivers
by Eric Mesa
I just got an Acer Aspire One and threw Fedora 15 Alpha on it. This
is a good thing as, according to
linuxwireless.org/en/users/drivers/brcm80211 says that my wifi chip is
in the 2.6.38 kernel. That page tells me to d/l some firmware files
to a specific directory. I went there and those files are already
there. But I don't have any wireless configured.
The system only sees em1 and lo if I do an iwconfig and em1 is the ethernet.
lspci -vnn | grep 14e4
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313
802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:0510]
so the system can see the hardware. Why is it not loading? Is there
another step I'm missing?
Thanks!

How to change dm_crypt aes/256 LVM password after install?
by johhny_at_poland77
I installed a Fedora 14 & an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my PC.
I used dm_crypt/LVM/with aes256 in both install.
(2 VolumeGroups, each encrypted, so there is 2 separated & encrypted linux distro on this machine)
The Question: How can i change the passwords for the encrypted VG's?
Thank you in anticipation!
