Fedora says Thank You
by Tom Callaway
First of all, I do not want to take any credit for this idea, it belongs
to John Rose, and has been bouncing around, trying to come to life,
since July 2010. I am just happy to help it finally hatch!
John, Jared, Paul, Max, and I all want to thank Fedora users and
contributors for everything that they do in our rich and diverse
community. As a small token of our appreciation, we're giving away free
Fedora stickers and case badges to any community member who sends us a
Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE). It is our little way of saying
thank you for all that you do.
Here is a short FAQ:
Q: What is a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope?
A: A Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) is an envelope with the
sender's name and address on it, with affixed paid postage. In the UK,
this is also known as a "Stamped Addressed Envelope (SAE)".
Q: Where do I send my SASE?
A:
Red Hat
c/o Tom Callaway
314 Littleton Road
Westford, MA
01886-4105
Q: How long is this offer good?
A: We will return any SASEs that I receive on or before May 31, 2011.
Q: How does this work?
A: Basically, you write your mailing address on an unsealed envelope and
attach paid US postage to that envelope (enough to send a letter to that
address from the US). This is your SASE.
Next, you put your SASE in another envelope, which you then mail to me
at the above address.
When I receive it, I will open your envelope, put in some nifty Fedora
stickers and case badges, seal it up and drop it back in the mail to you.
Q: Is there a limit on how many SASEs I can send you?
A: Please, one SASE per person. If you have some sort of complicated
situation, feel free to email me directly and we'll work something out
(spot(a)fedoraproject.org).
Q: Is this offer open to contributors outside the US?
A: Of course! We realize that it may not be possible or simple for our
international contributors to get their hands on US postage, so you are
more than welcome to include an International Reply Coupon instead.
(More info about International Reply Coupons can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_reply_coupon) If you choose
this option, please do not forget to include the self-addressed envelope!
Q: I can't find an International Reply Coupon!
A: Just email me (spot(a)fedoraproject.org) and let me know, we'll work
something out.
Q: Can I decorate my SASE?
A: Sure. Just remember that it will be coming right back to you.
Q: Do I need to prove that I am a Fedora User or Contributor?
A: Nope. If you go to the trouble of sending us the SASE, we'll send you
stickers and case badges.
Q: Can I tweet/dent/facebook/IRC/email/tell my friends about this offer?
A: Absolutely.
Q: Can I just put some money in the envelope and have you buy postage
with it for me?
A: No. Any money found in the envelope will go into my 1 year old son's
college fund. If postage is a problem, please send me an email
(spot(a)fedoraproject.org).
Q: Will Fedora or Red Hat keep a record of my mailing address?
A: Nope. All we'll do is put stickers and case badges in the envelope,
seal it up, and drop it back in the mail.
Q: How many stickers and case badges do I get?
A: One large Fedora Logo laptop sticker (3 inch) and four small foil
"Powered by Fedora" case badges.
Q: What do the stickers look like?
A: http://spot.fedorapeople.org/sticker-pic.jpg
Q: Is this an April Fools Day joke?
A: Nope. This is serious.
Q: What if I don't use Fedora?
A: You can still get stickers. There is no OS check involved.
Q: I want more stickers than you normally give out! Can I ask for a few
more?
A: If you have a special situation, feel free to email me
(spot(a)fedoraproject.org), and we'll see what can be done.
Q: Is this information on the Fedora website somewhere?
A: Yes: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Thank_You
Q: I have a question that isn't answered here, where can I ask it?
A: Email spot(a)fedoraproject.org.
Thanks again,
~tom

GKrellM & alerts
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fc14 box that's been running well for quite a while. For the
past few weeks, however, something happens that causes the box to
thrash like crazy until it eventually consumes all its available
memory and swap, and oopses while the kernel struggles to kill
processes in an attempt to free memory.
I've got a few VMs running, a browser or two, and a bunch of
terminals, but I have 16GB of RAM on my desktop, and no condition
should ever exist where it should kill the box because of lack of
memory.
After all that explanation, what I'd like to do is enable one of the
memory alerts in GKrellM, but I can't find any suggestions of what to
use for the "Alarm command" or "Warn command". Is there a WAV file or
something that I should use there to have it play when a memory limit
is reached, or does it have to be a whole command that is run?
Suggestions sure appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Totem crashing
by Guilherme Patriota
With Fedora 15, Totem crashs if you open it the first time without a video
to play with, although it wors fine after you open it with a video and then
try to open it without it. I don't know if it's the same thing with Fedora
14 as I don't have it anymore.
Anyone else had this issue?

Problem with atheros ar5008 wifi card
by JD
I have an Atheros AR5008 (AR5416 / AR2133 chipset) mini-pci (32 bit)
wifi card.
If I boot into Fedora, with any of the kernels
kernel-2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686
kernel-2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686
kernel-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686
Or mainline kernels:
linux-2.6.36.x
linux-2.6.37.x
linux-2.6.38.x
I see this output during boot
ath: Failed to stop TX DMA in 100 msec after killing last frame
and even after boot (while logged in to the main console as root).
So, the wlan0 device is never available. Ath9k driver is loaded.
But no wlan0 device.
So, what I do in order to fix the problem is to boot into
windows (xp), bring up the card, and reboot into linux,
and then the card works. This has been going on for several
days now, and I have no idea what might be causing this.
If you need more data, please let me know.
Cheers,

compile error between gcc 4.5 and 4.6

I'm having trouble with building dvbcut [1] for F15. It occurs on both

Hello All,
I have been fighting with the sound on my Acer Aspire TimelineX

tried everything that I found there and got nowhere.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RESTful tools
by Skunk Worx
Hi,
I see a google code project named "staff" that converts a fairly simple
interface definition into C/C++ web client and service headers and stubs.
With appropriate options, "staff" can create RESTful client and service
stubs.
If anyone is familiar with gSOAP, it kind of resembles staff, but
without the REST options.
Are there any tools like these available in the Fedora repos? Tools that
can build RESTful C/C++ stubs?
Does anyone have an opinion on the state of machine-to-machine
communications? Are SOAP and REST still pretty mainstream?
Thanks,
John

Encrypted MD Device
by EredicatorX
I was running CentOS/w Xen on my home server. I decided to move to FC14
because I finally got a TV that can double as a monitor, and wanted to
give KVM and VirtualBox a try.
In all the excitement I forgot about my 500GB RAID1 disk set. It has all
of my work from the past 10 years.
I use to run these comands that I would copy and paste in after each
reboot;
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/md0 crypt1
mount /dev/mapper/crypt1 /export/data_private
In CentOS all was well.
Now in Fedora I know I need to recreate the /dev/md0 device but I want
to do it with out harming the data on the drives.
I was tried the following;
mdadm --assemble /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1
mdadm: device /dev/sdc1 exists but is not an md array.
But these are both of my discs;

Desktop effects issue...
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
How come I can create an entirely fresh user account, log into KDE and enable
Desktop effects, but when I move my main user account's ~/.kde directory to a
different name and attempt to log in, I cannot enable Desktop effects? Are there
some relevant settings that are contained somwhere else other than "~/.kde"?
This is on Fedora 14, NVidia driver from RPM Fusion and KDE 4.6.2 from the KDE
updates-testing repo.
I know this is not much information, but I will provide whatever you ask me for.

Help with PPTP VPN connection keeps failing

Hi,
I just recently freshly installed FC14 on my laptop, and have been
trying to get a PPTP VPN connection working, but am having significant

I've properly configured the VPN settings, and see the connection
succeeds, but then shuts right back down. If I try the same credentials
