Docs for kernel boot parameters
by Sam Varshavchik
I just did a fresh F13 install on a server with a softraid setup that's
similar to a setup on a different existing server. The other server was
upgraded to F13, this one is a fresh install. Both servers, raid-wise, look
the same: two disks with RAID1 ext3 partitions.
This is the mouthful that Anaconda dumped into menu.lst on an F13 fresh
install:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64 ro
root=UUID=a9b80e40-3a79-4522-b8a8-ecb3960720b4
rd_MD_UUID=b0cb9b26:be362a98:012cdf18:19de5ac1
rd_MD_UUID=067004a2:11daf9c2:0cedca66:ac63c62d rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_DM
LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=us rhgb quiet
When, previously, Anaconda updated the other server from F12 to F13, it did
not write any of the above rd_* parameters, just root=, and that's it.
It's fairly obvious that rd_NO* says that I do not use the similarly-named
facilities, but I'm wondering what exactly happens by specifying these
parameters. The other server does not use LUKS, LVM, or DM also, but it
manages to boot just fine without these boot options.
I'm not positive what rd_MD_UUID does, I'm guessing that this specifies in
which order /dev/md minor numbers should be assigned to the various software
volumes, by the kernel, at boot. This is obviously a good thing, keeps
/dev/md? from jumping around unexpectedly, for some reason, but why did
Anaconda did not do the same thing when I updated the other existing server
to F13?
Anyone happens to know a useful link that describes these kernel boot
parameters, I'm curious, but Google only shows links to everyone else's
menu.lst that has the same keywords, and that's about it.

Not yet no - excellent suggestion tho ... I have to proceed with care
as the network is in production. I will definitely test this.

Both cards are running at 100 but good idea

While the cards were unused (bought a few years ago and in the parts
department :-) ... the switch is not. So this firewall had not had Gb
the cards before .. tho it does have that one on board NIC i could try
as well.
thanks for ideas

System unresponsive during HDD activity
by Konstantin Svist
For some reason, while running HDD-intensive tasks (e.g. svn update on
a large tree), system becomes extremely unresponsive.
And I don't mean tasks that require any disk access - I'm trying to type
inside an ssh session in a terminal, and the remote machine is getting
my keystrokes after a pretty long delay.
Just now, composing this email, thunderbird got stuck at the previous
sentence for a second while it was downloading new messages.
What's going on??

Problem with USB KVM Switch.
by Michael D. Setzer II
In switching from a Trendnet KV-400 swith to a USB 2.0 KVM Switch I am
having a problem with the monitor coming up in 1024x768 mode instead of
the 1280x1024. If I plug the monitor directly to this Fedora 12 machine, it
comes up as 1280x1024?
The monitor is a Sceptre Tech Inc 19" which is recognized by the fedora
when it is connected directly to the machine with 1280x1024 with 60hz.
If I then hook the monitor back up thru the switch if works at the correct
resolution, but expect that a restart will put it back to the 1024x768, and from
the specs it should be running at 75hz.
Haven't found a fedora drive for this monitor, and system-config-display
doesn't show it.
Is this a problem with the KVM switch or with the Monitor using default
settings. Don't understand why it sees the monitor as unknown even when it
is the selected PC on the swich at boot up.

sssd.conf sample

Looking for samples of /etc/sssd.conf file.
Could you please attach and send them directly
to me instead of the list (just trying to spare
the list from many such attachments).
Thanx a lot.

selective command history
by Suvayu Ali
Hi everyone,
I wanted to have different command history for my interactive bash
session and the history that is written in my bash_history file. Does
anyone have any idea how to achieve that?
My use case is, to be able to use up arrow or be able to search
through my history with C-r for all the commands I type. But I want to
ignore the trivial day to day use commands to be ignored when the
history is written to the history file. If I set HISTIGNORE the
ignored commands also disappear from the interactive command history,
but without it my shell history file gets cluttered with all these day
to day commands.
TIA

gdm different behavior with identical configuration
by Sam Varshavchik
My /etc/gdm/custom.conf file is below. Same contents on two server. On the
first server, gdm shows a countdown clock, then automatically logs me in. On
the second server, gdm shows me a menu with two choices: my username, and
"Automatic Login", selecting "Automatic Login" starts the same countdown
clock as the first server, then I get logged in.
I cannot figure WTF gdm is doing differently, with the same configuration.

New install
by Rod McCown
Hello all,
I just finished with a RedHat class and am trying to run the "Fedora
13 desktop" on the only thing that I have left in my office that I can get
512 MB of RAM on. The disk will boot my laptop, but unfortunately it is a
company laptop and I cannot put anything else on it. But I know that the CD
works. I just tried on a AMD K6-2 500Mhz machine and it says this is the
wrong architecture. It says:
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: cmov
Unable to boot. Please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
Is this CPU just too old for the version I'm using?
Thanks.

I am not sure that it is the right place to post this email, but maybe
