Accessing your gnome (ssh) keyring from outside the Desktop session
by Philip Prindeville
I normally leave a Gnome session running on my build machine for months
at a time, but don't always work directly on that machine (at it's
keyboard and monitor).
Sometimes I ssh into it remotely to look at progress from automated
builds, and occasionally to push out a build.
The issue is this: when I ssh into it, I don't have access to the keys
that I've stored in the ssh-agent.
Well, it's not exactly an ssh-agent. It's the gnome-keyring-daemon that
gets started as part of the desktop as:
/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --start --components=ssh
as part of my startup applications. (I also run "ssh-add .ssh/id_dsa"
as a startup application.)
ssh-agent used to leave environment variables which I could then use
from outside the Desktop session as $SSH_AUTH_SOCK and
$SSH_AGENT_PID... but the keyring daemon leaves slightly different
variables: $GNOME_KEYRING_PID and $GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL.
Anyone have a simple mechanism for getting that into your ssh sessions?
Thanks,
-Philip

F13: Missing software update notifications
by Kevin T. Likes
I somehow managed to turn off (delete?) the icon that notifies me when
software updates are available, and can't find anything on how to get it
back. Any suggestions on how to get it back?

Re: Anything for home user and not the technical one??
by Hugh Caley
Can I just point out quickly here that Fedora is probably not a proper
distribution for home use? It's meant to be a test bed for the latest
in Linux and open source software; it has a very short version cycle
time, it's always on the cutting edge, it isn't documented well, etc. I
love it, personally, but I'm a Linux administrator.
The only advantages to it are that it's free, and a couple of people
have written books based on it. You'd probably be much better off with
RHEL (not free), CentOS (free) or Ubuntu (free), all of which are meant
to be more stable and better documented than Fedora.
Just my 2 cents.

Thunderbird/Lightning won't send meeting invites any more
by Julian C. Dunn
Somewhere along the way, Thunderbird's calendar has stopped being able
to send meeting invites to people anymore. The "Notify attendees"
checkbox is greyed out on new appointments.
Any idea how I might go about fixing/diagnosing this problem?
I'm on Fedora 13 with Thunderbird as follows:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.10) Gecko/20100621
Fedora/3.0.5-1.fc13 Lightning/1.0b2pre Thunderbird/3.0.5

Fedora for the home user
by Robandapril
My name is Robert and just thought id pop in to say, Fedora does
sometimes require a little tweaking but you have to keep in mind that
its made from millions of people things get overlooked sometimes and you
may need to download a couple plugins and such but in my experience its
a great platform to learn from and possibly if your comfortable with it
a great platform to develop. So my advice to you Paswhia is to be
patient read up on release notes and immerse yourself in the fedora
project as a whole On Sat, 2010-07-24 at 15:03 +0000,

[F13] thunderbird-3.1.1-1 won't restart
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
having big problems with the new thunderbird-3.1.1-1: After exiting a
running thunderbird-3.1.1-1 and starting it again, nothing happens: No
error message or something similar. Logging out or restart does not
help. I had to downgrade thunderbird for getting it to run again.
Somebody has similar problems?
