F13: kvm guest screen resolution
by Christoph A.
Hi,
I'm running a kvm guest (F13) on a F13 host but didn't managed to get a
reasonable screen resolution in the guest OS. I used cirrus and vga but
was not able to get a resolution higher then 800x600.
I tried also to manually add some resolutions to the xorg.conf but
without success.
Would be great if I could get at least a resolution of 1280x960.
Is someone using kvm-qemu with decent resolutions?
The majority of sites recommended vga for high resolutions but it didn't
work out so far.
kind regards,
Christoph

Does ccsm work with nouveau?
by Sam Varshavchik
Is there anyone here who has:
1) Installed the experimental DRI drivers
and
2) Who is using nouveau with an Nvidia NV4x chipset (geforce go 6600 is what
I got myself)
and
3) Who enabled compiz in desktop effects
and
4) Who used ccsm, and actually managed to get ccsm to do something?
I can run ccsm without any apparent errors. I can choose to enable/disable
various plugins ccsm offers me, through its interface.
But that's pretty much it. I can see nothing that comes out from my
fiddling in ccsm. Bupkis. Nothing happens as a result of me flipping the
various knobs in ccsm. I enable, disable various plugins. Pushing the key
sequence that those plugins seem to be using results in nothing, zilch.
The only thing that works for me are the two checkmarks in the "Desktop
Effects" preferences dialog. I can make the windows wobble, and get the cube
effect when flipping through workspaces. But nothing in ccsm proper
apparently has any effect for me. I ran ccsm from a terminal window, in case
in blurts something to standard error, but nothing comes out, it just takes
my settings, and, nothing happens.
It's probably that the freshly-minted noveau driver doesn't yet implement
some key piece of functionality ccsm needs, but no error gets reported. But
maybe I've missed some required step somewhere along the way.

How else can you install it as non-root, not specifying --prefix will
default to /usr/local which means you must be root to install it anyway.

GDM slow to accept password
by Robert Arkiletian
Using Fedora 11 x86_64 and 12 i686
During login, after selecting username it takes too long (up to 10
seconds) for gdm to present the password prompt. However, if I simply
type in my password and hit enter before the password prompt appears,
the login is successful. I remember the password prompt would show up
much more quickly before. Has anyone seen this behaviour?

fnfx trouble on Toshiba
by Yogesh
Hello,
I have very recently migrated to Fedora from Windows. I have installed it on
my Toshiba L505-S5971 laptop.
I installed fnfx after reading about it in some forum. That went fine.
Now with every boot I get the following message.
Starting fnfxd: modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting toshiba_acpi
(/lib/modules/2.6.33.5-112.fc13.i686/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/toshiba_acpi.ko):
No such device
FnFX Daemon v0.3 (c) 2003, 2004 Timo Hoenig <thoenig(a)nouse.net>
fatal error: Could open /proc/acpi/toshiba/keys.
Please make sure that your kernel has enabled the Toshiba option in the ACPI
section.
For more information read the documentation and/or
http://fnfx.sf.net/index.php?section=doc#kernel.
Currently, the hotkeys are not working. Also, I guess, there is not control
over the CPU fan. It is being used heavily and all the time. It makes noise.
Can someone help me with this? How should I go about this?
Thanks

Relabeling all audio files on a server
by Don KeLzy
I have a server which houses thousands of audio tracks and materials.
Recently I started using a web application which seems to have a ew
problems with the naming convention used by default.
For example it has a problem with apostrophe signs ('), I want to be
able to create a script which goes to through the folder and all
files and folders under it and renames all the tracks by deleting
every entry of the apostrophe where it encounters them.
E.g. This ain't no game => This aint no game
Mr Brown's Last supper => Mr Browns Last supper
and like that. I want the apostrophe sign to be deleted but everything
else stays the same.
Any suggestions on doing this would really be appreciated. Thanks.

Network Manager, WPA, "available to all users"
by SternData
I have a desktop with wireless, due to some cabling difficulties. I'm
trying to switch from "Network" to "NetworkManager" because we're moving
our wireless from WEP to WPA-PSK.
Using Network Manager, I can configure a connection with a static IP
address and things seem fine.
BUT, I want this connection established at boot time and I don't want to
have to manually enter the WPA-PSK password.
So, I used EDIT CONNECTIONS to edit the connection and checked
"Available to all users". When I click "Apply", the "Auto xxxx" has
disappeared from the list of wireless connections. Clicking on the
network from the list shown my nm-applet seems to create an "Auto xxxx"
that uses DHCP and has forgotten the password.
How do I configure a WPA-PSK wireless connection that (1) is remembered
and (2) available whether or not I'm logged in?

F13: screensaver problem after upgrade from F12
by Kevin T. Likes
I recently upgraded from F12 to F13 using preupgrade. Everything seemed to
go well, except for one problem I think I've traced to the screensaver.
When I lock the screen now at the console, I get logged out of my
session after a short period of time (a few minutes) . My first thought was
that maybe one of the screensavers was bad, so I went to change that one I
was using, but as soon as I selected another one (not even having to hit
preview), I get logged out, although it does seem the selection is changed.
I tried unlocking immediately, and it works. If I unlock the screen after
a couple of minutes, but before the unwanted logout, the screen just goes
black, and I can't get in. The system is still running, though, since I can
get in via SSH.
I do see in /var/log/messages that is looks like Xorg is coredumping, but I
don't see anything to indicate why.
Has anyone else had this trouble?
