Unreadable external LCD after upgrade to 2.6.32
by Sam Tregar
Hey all. I've got a Dell Latitude E1505 running Fedora F12. I just updated
to 2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686 today and as soon as I rebooted my external LCD was
unreadable. It had wavy vertical lines all over it and appeared to have
less than the full vertical resolution. The laptop LCD looked fine.
After checking the cable, power-cycling the monitor and reseting its
settings, and rebooting a few times didn't help, I booted back
into 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 and all was well again. Any ideas what
could cause this and what I might do to fix it?
The display chip on this laptop is an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 and I'm
using the radeon driver. Let me know if I can provide anything that might
help - X logs, dmesg, whatever.
Thanks!

I ran into the same issue with my Motorola and 3Skypephone handsets being
paired, but not able to connect with NetworkManager.
I hacked together http://www.eridani.co.uk/rfselect/rfselect.tcl which opens
an RFCOMM session to the selected mobile phone, and with that connected the
Mobile Broadband entries in NetworkManager appear and connect successfully.
Hope that helps.

Tethering iPhone
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I have tethering enabled on my iPhone 3GS and it works fine with MacOS and
WinXP, both of which required virtually no setup. Has anyone done this
recently on Fedora 12?
Either USB or Bluetooth connections to the phone would suit.

Please note that /dev/md1 is net up as a single disk at the point of failure.
After spending significant time trying to get this to work, I decided to reinstall my system from scratch since I have a complete backup. During installation I set up 2 RAID1 arrays, /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 with the appropriate LVM set up through Anaconda. During the write to disk phase, it failed.
I subsequently installed OpenSuSE 11.2, and it successfully allocated the RAID1 array, but on reboot, it failed, so I went back to a single drive Fedora 12.
I have not had time yet to check the bugzilla database or file a bugzilla yet.

fluxbox madness after latest updates
by oleksandr korneta
help! yesterday night I applied the available updates (list below),
rebooted the machine and my fluxbox went nuts.
Every second time when a new window opens the system stalls. The
interface becomes totally unresponsive. No reaction to mouse clicks,
hotkey combinations don't work, nothing helps. Only when I switch to
console and kill the latest (only latest) started application I'm back
to normal. Looks like all the clicks and keypresses are buffered during
the system is unresponsive, and they get executed all at once. This
happens almost with every second window I open no matter of applications.
Funny things happen with hotkey combinations. They can be executed only
it I remove the focus from the latest opened window, otherwise --
nothing works.
On top of that there are random crashes of some other applications (i.e.
thunderbird) that work just fine on other WMs.
The only packages possibly related I see in the list below are xorg* and
new nvidia drivers. I can't roll back because the old version are gone.
Anybody else is experiencing this or am I the luckiest?
I'm temporary on openbox now, but I want back.
Any suggestions?

lzma compression on official isos vs Deltaisos

I tried using the default xz compression (level 6 according to the man
page) on Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso, and reduced it to 96.66% of the
original size, a savings of about 100 MB. Uncompressing took about 2
minutes. (Level 9 compression might do slightly better, but would have
taken much longer to run the test.)
I tried the same thing on a deltaiso, and it actually got slightly
bigger, so that's out. But deltaisos have the advantage that they use
delta compression relative to a similar ISO, so normally they should be
much smaller.

Converting SVG to PDF
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
Is there a free SVG to PDF converter available that actually works?
Inkscape produces PDF files of extremely large size and extremely
bad quality. Batik introduces artefacts (e.g. a huge black rectangle
in the middle of the graphic, labels have shifted, corners rendered
incorrectly).
Thanks!
Take care
