USB I/O performance
by Patrick O'Callaghan
Just a quick note to call people's attention to
http://marc-abramowitz.com/archives/2007/02/17/getting-good-performance-o.... This is a couple of years old but it worked like a charm for me.
Briefly, there's a kernel parameter
called /sys/block/sd[a,b,...]/device/max_sectors (for USB drives sda,
sdb etc.). This specifies the maximum size of a disk I/O operation for
USB storage devices in units of 512 bytes, the default value being 240,
i.e. 120KB (see http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#i5). The max_sectors
value can be changed doing "echo N > ..." as root, and can have a
dramatic effect on write performance for USB devices such as pendrives.
I tested this by writing over 2GB to a fresh VFAT filesystem on a 4GB
Kingston Data Traveller pendrive plugged into a USB2 port with the EHCI
driver (as indicated by dmesg). With the default setting, this took
nearly 90 minutes including a final sync to flush the buffers. Using a
max_sectors value of 1024 -- the highest the system would accept -- the
time was reduced to under 16 minutes, a better than 5 times speedup.
YMMV of course, as different brands of pendrive can have very different
performance characteristics.
Note that the value resets to the default when you unplug the drive, so
you need to set it manually each time. I don't know if there's a way to
do this automatically, or change the default value permanently.
Sorry of everyone already knew this, but I found it so useful I just had
to share it :-)

Enabling Tabs On Mediawiki
by Robert L Cochran
I recently installed mediawiki-1.15.1. I would like to get those nice
tabs that you see at the top of this page for "Manual", "Discussion", etc:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Configuration_settings#Site_customiz...
Currently my Main Page shows no tabs. How do I enable them? Do I need to
edit /usr/share/mediawiki/skins/monobook/main.css? Or do I need to edit
Monobook.css? I don't seem to have a file of that name for my mediawiki
installation:
[root@deafeng3 w]# locate *Monobook.css
/usr/share/doc/testdisk-doc-6.11/doc/Monobook.css
Here is what I have currently installed:
Installed Packages
mediawiki.x86_64
1.15.1-48.fc11
mediawiki-Cite.noarch 0-0.4.20080901svn.fc11
mediawiki-math.x86_64
1.15.1-48.fc11
mediawiki-nomath.x86_64
1.15.1-48.fc11
Thanks

F11 Upgrade Hangs
by Law Barstow
I am trying to upgrade my Fedora 10 system to Fedora 11. System is
x86_64 with a RAID1 Mirror. /Boot is on this mirror, so I can't use
preupgrade (Bug 504826). Instead, I downloaded the install DVD and
tried to do the upgrade.
If I choose "Upgrade Existing System",the upgrade starts and I
think /sbin/loader runs then it hangs at "Initializing Hardware." I do
get a mouse pointer that starts working after a minute or so. But
that's it. Also, the text is shifted to the right. So the information
starts on the far right of the screen and then wraps to the left.
When I then tried using the "Install using basic video driver" option,
my existing F10 installation isn't found. Instead, an error of "error
reading device sda" is displayed and I am asked to reinitialize my
drives, which is something I'd rather not do.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Law

Fedora compile dependence problem
by jnissley@nissley.org
I am trying to compile an application on a Fedora 11 computer I have but
keep getting a missing dependency error when trying to install qt-devel.
Here is the error:
--> Processing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.10.1-4 for package:
glibc-2.10.1-4.i686

glibc-2.10.1-4.i686 from updates has depsolving problems

glibc-2.10.1-4.i686 (updates)
Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.10.1-4 is needed by package
glibc-2.10.1-4.i686 (updates)
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
package-cleanup --dupes
rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
# rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest returns nothing
I appear to have glibc-common installed.
# rpm -qa | grep glibc-common
glibc-common-2.10.1-5.x86_64
# uname -a
Linux mythtv2.nissley.org 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jul 29
16:02:42 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Why is yum trying to install the 32 bit packages if I am running the 64
bit operating system?
Any help would be appreciated.

Fedora11: Plans for updated mesa/xorg packages ?
by Terry Barnaby
Does anyone know if there is a plan to release updated
xorg/mesa packages for F11 any time soon ?
The F11 ones are very broken, at least for ATI radeon based systems.
I have been using code from freedesktops git sources
(drm,mesa,xf86-video-ati) and this is now getting there, at least
blender works !
However, the changes needed to the stock F11 are now getting larger
(xserver update) and it would be good to have an RPM based system again !

I'm impressed!
by Tom Horsley
Just finished swapping in new motherboard with different chipset,
faster cpu (and more cores), more memory, etc.
Plugged the disks back in, and it just booted and worked
perfectly. I was expecting to have to fiddle initrd at
a minimum and perhaps even reinstall.
The most drastic thing I had to do was re-generate
the 70-persistent-cd.rules file since the dvd moved
to a different bus on the new motherboard.
Haven't yet tried booting all the different partitions
I have on this thing, but fedora 11 x86_64 survived the
transition like a champ!
Now I should be able to install a Windows XP kvm so
I don't need to boot a separate windows box when I need
windows.

fc-10/windows xp installation
by pete b.
What I'm doing is installing fedora-10 so I can dual boot either fc-10 or
windows-xp.
windows-xp already exists using 26GB of 80GB on the HD.
I go thru a few menus. Then I get to the partitioning and have problems.
I selected "use free space of selected drives and create default layout".
1 drive is selected and the same drive is chosen to boot from.
The response is:
1. Could not allocate requested partitions. Not enough space left to create
partition for /boot.
2. Have not defined a root partition.
What is going on with this? Is there a reliable fix?
FYI pehaps I selected the wrong disk (I have two). Is there a method to
find out
the manufacturer of a disk from windows?
thx much,
peter
