Need help with Reboot cause
by Peter J. Stieber
This is going to sound vague, but here goes...
I have a dual opteron system that has been acting as the worldly node
for a small cluster of computers since September, 2004. The machine is
running the latest x86_64 Fedora 10 kernel that I recently loaded (April
2). The machine reboots without warning. I can't find the cause in log
files (maybe I'm not looking in the correct log).
I'm currently running memtest. If all of the tests pass, could the
community suggest other diagnostic tasks or information I could post to
help diagnose the problem?
I wish I could be more specific,
Pete

Hello list;
I recently bought an Autumn Wave OnAir HDTV USSB tuner.
I read the pvrusb2 driver setup information.
I am logged in as "mick" KDE.
In an xterm as root:

Under F10 it fails with:

I then downloaded the latest kernal from kernal.org, configured and compiled it
When I boot it I get "cannot find /dev/root"
Has anyone got this thing to work?
How do you compile tyhe new kernels?

Any package for DSPAM?

Are there any packages built of DSPAM? Any yum repositories?
I'd rather not reinvent someone else's wheel!

F9: Unable to get SVN/Apache working
by Dan Thurman
Previous posting broken off from thread:
"F9: Eclipse plug: Subversive SVN does not work?"
I posted previously thinking that there was a problem
with eclipse/netbeans, but it was not. I have decided
to create a new thread focusing exclusively on SVN/Apache
issues, thus this "new" posting.
To make a long story short, I have been able to get my
SVN working with the svnserve daemon and it works.
However, I am unable to get SVN/Apache to work.
My SVN repository directory structure is:
===========================
/svn --> /f-App1/Develop/SC/svn
/f-App1/Develop/SC/svn:
apache
passwords svnauthz.conf
[ # cat svnauthz.conf :
[groups]
home = user1.user2,user3
[/]
* = r
[svn3:/]
* =
@home = rw
]
repos
svn1 svn2 svn3 svn4
Note:
1) All selinux contexts of dir/files are: httpd_sys_content_t
2) All directory permissions are: 2770
3) All file permissions are: 660
4) All svn[1-4]/conf files are linked to apache/files for svnserve
daemon
svnserve
authz passwd svnserve.conf
===========================
I have created a simple apache construct in
/etc/httpd/conf.d/subversion.conf as:
===========================
<Location /svn>
DAV svn
SVNParentPath /svn/repos
# AuthzSVNAccessFile /svn/apache/svnauthz.conf
# AuthUserFile /svn/apache/passwords
# AuthType Basic
# AuthName "Authorization Required"
# Require valid-user
# Satisfy any
</Location>
===========================
Starting httpd, results in error_log as:

[Sun May 03 13:25:11 2009] [error] avahi_client_new() failed: An
unexpected D-Bus error occured
=============================
Note: I have tried to resolve the avahi_client_new() error above but
unable to fix it. No
response from Fedora community as to what this error might
mean. I have removed
all extra avahi packages, short of removing too many
dependencies. So, for the moment
I have ignored this error. Also, as appeared in the original
posting, Apache's mod_security
was reporting "errors", so I removed mod_security so that
these messages do not appear
for the purpose of testing and getting svn/apache setup right
before adding it back in.
Tested svn using Firefox, using URL: http://localhost/svn/svn3/:
===================
Revision 2: /
* branches/
* tags/
* trunk/
Powered by Subversion version 1.4.6 (r28521).
===================
But httpd error_log shows:
===================
[Sun May 03 14:00:56 2009] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Could not fetch
resource information. [301, #0]
[Sun May 03 14:00:56 2009] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] (84)Invalid or
incomplete multibyte or wide character: Requests for a collection must
have a trailing slash on the URI. [301, #0]
===================
However, it seems to work. I can walk down the trees to
the leafs and no further error_log messsages appear.
Next, I tested svn on the command line:
===================
$ svn list http://gold/svn/svn3
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/svn/svn3'
svn: PROPFIND of '/svn/svn3': 403 Forbidden (http://gold)
===================
And httpd error_log shows:
===================
$ svn list http://localhost/svn/svn3
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/svn/svn3'
svn: PROPFIND of '/svn/svn3': 403 Forbidden (http://localhost)
===================
I have at this point, tried almost every permutations of changing dir/file
permissions, relocating the repositories to: /var/www and to /var/www/html,
modifying subversion.conf, checked apache permissions (Allow from all) in
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf & subversion.conf files, checked the firewalls
(they are wide open) and I could never get past the PROPFIND,
403 Forbidden problem.
I cannot think of anything else to try, so I am at a stand-still.
Can someone help?
Thanks!

Any chance you could re-post your question using complete words and
sentences,
and a complete description of what you have done and what you expect to see,
and what you actually see?
I read your message four times and I still have no idea what you're actually
doing. Are you trying to install F10 on a machine that already has F5
installed on it, without overwriting the F5 installation?
Describe your current setup, what you want to do, and what you have tried.
Include complete error messages (if any).
---------------
jbyers:
sorry I wasn't clearer; I was trying to not be so verbose
Yes, I am trying to install F10 onto sda1 on a machine that already has Fc5
installed on it on sdb6 , without overwriting the Fc5 installation.
Every install attempt of f10, I use custom partitioning, and only format
sda1 as ext3.
My fc5 remains available.
I previously had a thread where I was trying to use a fedoraliveinstall cd
to install, and never could get it to boot, even tho the install said it
was successful.
I won't repeat everything I tried with the liveinstall cd, because my
experiences then
and now are much the same, installs, but no boot.
I am trying the same thing now with a f10dvd.
1)I first tried to keep the fc5 in control of the mbr on sda
and hence using fc5 grub.conf to have a stanza for f10
copied directly from the f10 install grub.conf
This gives me : Error 2 bad file or directory.
If I instead use a stanza for f10
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
then I get error msgs:
cant access resume device (sda/sdb2)
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot no such file or directory
2) I next tried allowing the f10 install on sda1 have grub install into mbr
of sda,
thus replacing the fc5 grub into mbr of sda5.
This does not give me Error2 as in 1) above but instead
the same errors as in chainloader +1 in 1) above:
cant access resume device (sda/sdb2)
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot no such file or directory
2a)appending "scsi_mod.scan=sync" to the kernel line
did not give me those last 2 msgs, but instead
flashed an entire screen of boot msgs, which then disappeared, screen went
blank
I hope this makes it clearer.

f10dvd installs but won't boot
by Jackson Byers
I am out of ideas,
using a purchased osdisc fedora 10 dvd
reinstalled f10dvd media ck said ok
this time using minimum options
and this time accepting default of mbr sda
install said successful
but on reboot get exactly same errors as seen
previously when f10 grub into sda1 notmbr , (then was using fc5 grub in
mbr sda)
this time there should have been no connection at all to my fc5 on sdb6
but get same boot error:
cant access resume device (/dev/sdb2)
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot no such file or directory
so my hopes that my troubles were my old fc5 grub version .97-5
was confusing f10 hence preventing f10 booting, seem not to be the issue.
I did find one suggestion on fedora common problems or?
"to edit the kernel argument and append "scsi_mod.scan=sync"
so i use knoppixcd to get my fc5 back: in grub root(hd1,5) setup(hd0)
which is where i am now for this email,
and mount the new installed f10 and edit its grub.conf as above
then went back to knoppixcd root(0,1) setup(0) to get back to f10
knoppixcd out
then rebooted again
this time the f10dvdinst boot attempt
does _not_ give me that dev/root one line error
but
instead a whole screen of boot msgs
but then screen quickly goes completely blank, no response
have to hit power button
this last response says
appending "scsi_mod.scan=sync" had some effect
but I have no idea what else to try.
Are there other scsi issues I should be aware of re f10?
My sda, sdb are both scsi disks
help, please
I really would like to dump fc5, but i need a booting f10

Off topic - mobo recommendations
by Tod Thomas
I'm shopping for a new developer machine for which I'll be using Fedora
as the development platform. Its been about about 7-8 years since I
built a machine from scratch but since then I've accumulated a lot of
parts that ultimately could contribute to a nice box if I had the right
motherboard.
I'm partial to AMD chips. I'm not a gamer but I do like nice visuals
and decent sound. I've got a good video and sound card now but they are
both 7-8 years old. I suspect things have changed a lot and almost
wonder if newer motherboards don't offer better on board now. I plan on
taking advantage of virtualization so I imagine memory and processing
speed would be indicated. Over the long run I always seem to run out of
PCI slots or USB ports so that would be a premium. Economy is also a
bonus. I don't mind paying for performance and extensibility but if I
could get something pretty decent at a low cost maybe I could buy a
couple and replace another older board I have running. I also like
BIOS's that are tweak friendly.
Right now the fastest machine in my fleet is an Intel Pentium M 1.4 GHz
running on a dell laptop. My desktop (development) is running an old
AMD Thunderbird which I don't even think breaks 1GHz and has only .5Gb
of onboard memory.
Sorry for off topic, just thought this might be the best place to get an
idea of what everybody else is using since we all share interest in the
same development platform. Flame me directly, spare the list :)
Thanks - Tod
