[Semi-OT] OSS audio vs ALSA
by John Wendel
While playing with "tinycore linux", I installed OSS audio drivers for
my onboard Intel HD audio. AMAZING IMPROVEMENT VS ALSA! With ALSA, I
have to max the volume to hear anything, with OSS 20% volume was a
normal listening level. Everything that I tried sounded much better with
OSS. I'm seriously thinking of switching my media box from Fedora to
tinycore.
Can someone explain why OSS was rejected by the Fedora team? License
problem?

Installing Moonlight?
by Matthew Saltzman
I went to view a site that requires Silverlight, and it directed me to
the http://go-mono.com/moonlight/ site to install Moonlight. I clicked
on the link there, but instead of offering to install the plugin,
Firefox (firefox-3.0.9-1.fc10.x86_64) offers to download it or open it
with the application of my choice.
I downloaded the file novell-moonlight-1.0.1-x86_64.xpi, which is a zip
archive, but I'm not sure what to do with its contents. Anyone know the
answer?
I also have nspluginwrapper-1.3.0-2.fc10, both x86_64 and i386
installed.
Thanks.

can't open .docx files using OO2.3 in F7
by Dave Stevens
the subject line says it. I downloaded the current version fro Linux from
OO.org and get a mass of rmps with dependencies. Suggestions? If I could open
this file (and others like it) I'd keep the version. For those inclined to
reccommend an upgrade I will do this when F11 is available but want to use
the current version of Fedora for another month or so.

Akonadi server process not registered at DBus
by linux guy
I get an Akonadi error message when I log into my KDE session.
A short while after the session starts, an Akonadi window appears with a
list of tasks that have occurred. The first item in the list marked as
an error is
"Akonadi server process not registered at D-Bus"
Frustratingly, the Akonadi error window disappears after being visible
for about 10 seconds and I can't get much more information than that.
There is a button to copy the error message(s) to the clipboard, but it
doesn't seem to work.
How do I troubleshoot/fix this problem ?
Thanks

Yes, refreshing the Firewall did help.
Now my eth0 (and NetworkManager) start successfully.
However, my route table is empty.
So still no internet with my router / DHCP.
SUMMARY
Fresh-boot the computer, while attached to router -> internet
[root@localhost ~]# service NetworkManager status
NetworkManager (pid 1938) is running...
[root@localhost ~]# service iptables stop

[root@localhost ~]# service NetworkManager stop
Stopping NetworkManager daemon: [ OK ]
[root@localhost ~]# service NetworkManager start
Setting network parameters... [ OK ]

RESULTS
eth0 and NM came-up just fine (this time).
Now that eth0 is running, I see that my ROUTE table is empty.

Things seem better since I flushed my firewall rules, but
any advice for routing tables would be appreciated.

Using CCSM in preference to Gnome Compiz Settings
by Alex Bennee
Hi,
Despite install ccsm I can't seem to get any of the additional feature
to work. Although I can configure keys on CCSM they don't work and
when I deliberately configure clashing keys the ccsm GUI doesn't warn
of a clash (or see them in the Advanced search pane).
I suspect the compiz settings are being put into different places and
compiz only paying attention to one. How do I ensure that I can use
ccsm over compiz manager to configure my compiz experience?

FC10 - External USB drive and LVM
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks.
I tried upgrading my FC7 desktop to FC10 which resulted in the PC not booting,
crashing during GRUB.
I have now installed FC10 onto a new HDD and want to copy the contents from my
old drive to my new one.
I thought that the easiest way would be to use my USB external caddy, but I
have a problem. The box sees the drive, and mounts /boot no problem.
However, I don't have access to the main contents as they were handled by LVM.
How can I now acces those filesystems?
The state of the PC is:
[root@lcomp5 ~]# mount
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/gary/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon
(rw,nosuid,nodev,user=gary)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/-boot type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal)
[root@lcomp5 ~]#fdisk /dev/sdb
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 9964.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
