Question about upgrading Fedora (from fc6 to FC10)
by Denis BUCHER
Hello,
I am quite new to Fedora. One of our server is installed with fc6 and I
see there are no updates anymore, which leads me to many questions :
1. Is there a place to find the packages to be able to have our server
installed with the latest FC6 updates ?
2. Can I upgrade "live" or should I use the CDROM ? What is the best ?
I read that "The recommended installation method is with a boot media
with the Anaconda installer as detailed in the Installation Guide
<http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/>. PreUpgrade
<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpgrade> is a slightly different
upgrade method where the all packages are downloaded before the system
is rebooted into the Anaconda installer. "
If that's true, can I thrust it at100% to make the server work, or are
there some changes in config that could not be solved ?
What do you suggest ? Simply backup /etc ?
3. Whatever solution I choose, is it better to upgrade fc6 -> FC10 or 6
-> 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10 ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help,
Denis
P.S. I already read this website :

annoying domain.local issue
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
I have trouble accessing local services inside my company from my
Fedora desktop.
We have samba webserver at samba.domain.local and when I try to open
it via Nautilus it fails. I also have Windows XP running in VirtualBox
and Windows open this samba share with no issue.
Also pinging samba.domain.local works form Windows in VirtualBox but
doesn't work from Fedora.
There is also a web server at web.domain.local that also works under
Windows but doesn't work under Fedora 10. If I remember correctly this
all worked under Fedora 6.
Do you have any issues when domain ends with dot local (.local) ?
How can I troubleshoot this more and fix it?
Both Fedora and Windows use the same DNS and same default gateway.
Thank you in advance,
Valent.

problem with gmerlin library
by Anurag Garg
Hello there,
I was trying to install open movie editor, for which gmerlin library is
essential. I tried to install it through source as it is not available
through yum. I was able to install it properly without any errors, but while
installing open movie editor, Its not able to locate its library. I even
tried to provide its path through by hand with out any luck,
I've already tried open movie editor and gmerlin forums and also googled
this but no luck, except few others also faced this same problem only on
fedora.
I am using fedora 10 x86_64 gnome.
Could any one help.
Thanks in advance.

Fedora 10 openssl + neon + subversion + https + user cert authentication
by Jorge Manta Bulhoes
Good day,
I've put this same question a while back and didn't get any answer.
Isn't anyone using snv with ssl client auth?
I don't know exactly where my problem is, but I'll explain in detail to
see if anyone has the same and a solution.
I'm trying to access to a subversion repo via https with client
authentication with certificates.
The solution is implemented in a centos 5.2.
If in the machine where the solution is implemented I can do a
svn co https://site/repo
The answer a question where the certificate resides for the access and I
can get a successful checkout.
If I do the same in a fedora 10 I get the following error after I tell
where the certificate is:
svn: OPTIONS of 'https://site/repo': SSL negotiation failed: SSL alert
received: Decrypt error (https://site)
For what I've seen this could be a bug recently introduced in
openssl/neon.
Is this right?
Both systems are completely up to date.
Thanks in advance.

WSJ on Oracle's purchase of Sun and consequences for MySQL
by Max Pyziur
APRIL 22, 2009 Fate of Sun's Software Is Uncertain
Deal Gives Oracle Control of 'Open Source' Projects, MySQL Database
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124035244246940627.html
(subs. required)
Some graphs:
'Some people who rely on MySQL and other "open source" products worry
about how Oracle will handle the programs it acquires along with Sun. The
programs are called open source because anyone can access or change the
computer code that make them work.
"This is a monster step backward for those of us who are committed to
sustaining open source," said Lev Gonick, chief information officer at
Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who uses database software
from Oracle as well as MySQL. "I have no doubt that this is an attempt to
kill the competition."

Treo 755p goes into boot cycle when connected to F10 over USB
by Mark A. Miller
I have a Palm Treo 755p. Up until recently, I could connect the Treo to my Dell D830 running F10 and hotsync, or I could run Mobile Stream's USBModem app on the Treo and establish a ppp internet connection.
Recently, when I make the USB connection from the phone to the laptop, the phone goes into an immediate, endless boot cycle. I know this could be the result of a million different things, but I was wondering if anybody out there had any suggestions. (2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686 #1 SMP)
I have tried all sorts of permutations of hotsyncing and modem usage over USB or bluetooth with various computers. I can hotsync the phone with my D830 over bluetooth, but I haven't figured how to do the bluetooth ppp configuration. USBmodem and hotsync work over USB on an Asus Z71a running XP. If I boot the Asus into F9 and connect the phone over USB, the phone doesn't reboot, but the pppd script doesn't run to completion. I also have an eee 1000, and I see either the phone rebooting or just the pppd failure, depending on what distribution I'm running.
I prefer USB, but I would try Bluetooth for dial-up, if somebody could point me towards good directions. I would even change the distro on my Asus or eee if that was a solution.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Bouts of Extreme System Slug
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello, All,
I am running F10 on a Dell Latitude D820 laptop, about two years
old, with 2GB memory and Centrino Due processors. Since a few weeks,
my laptop is suffering from bouts of sluggishness, typically lasting
for maybe a minute to a few minutes, and I have a feeling, it is
progressively getting worse. During these phases, everything is
running slow and GUI response is delayed for seconds or longer.
According to the system monitor, both processors are busy (up to
almost hundred percent); memory usage is well below one half and no
swap space is used, and network traffic is low, too.
The more applications I am running, the more noticeable these phases
of sluggishness become, although I am not sure whether this cuases
them or whether it just makes them more noticeable. In any case, when
I open more or more intensive applications, the onset of sluggishness
usually takes minutes, and persists minutes after applications are
closed again.
How can I diagnose what causes the sluggishness?
I considered running fsck or badblocks, but these can only be used
on unmounted file systems, and I find that even if I boot single user
mode, the root file system is mounted and can not be unmounted (says
it's busy).
I also experience some other problems, such as occasional crashes of
Firefox and OpenJDK. I am connected to the Internet via DHCP. When I
go to some places (including Stata Center, MIT) and connect to the
network (wired or wireless) there, my laptop freezes entirely in
irregular intervals (can be minutes or hours) and does not recover.
Thanks for the help!
Take care
Oliver
