java alternatives
by anonymous
Hello,
I'm running Fedora 10 and recently installed the Sun Java JDK 6_13 using the
alternatives command.
It works fine, including the plugin, but I really don't get the
synchronization process as discussed in the manual. If I issue the command
$ alternatives --display java
I see that there is a list of 'slaves' associated with the group 'java'
already present. These slaves are java commands and manpages.
I assume that I should also have included these slaves, but didn't.
So the first question I have is how can you add slaves afterwards?
I tried a number of ways but wasn't able to unless I removed it and
reinstalled it.
Also, even though this worked for slaves that were commands, it didn't work
for the manpages.
For example,
$ alternatives (etc.) --slaves /usr/share/man/man1/java.1.gz java.1.gz
/opt/java/man/man1/java.1 does not work.
I'm not even sure if I understand this correctly, but I can't find any good
documentation on the alternative system.
Afterwards there was a message that stated the group was now in manual mode
instead of automatic.
Basically my take is that when it's in automatic mode, then if you switch to
the other version using the command
$ alternative --config
All the other slaves will switch associated with the group will switch over
as well.
Now that it is in manual mode, do I have to switch each slave myself? How?

Fedora 10 incorrect "no network connection"
by Don Russell
Usually I ssh into my Linux machine and use the CLI but sometimes I do
log on from the attached keyboard/screen. In those cases, every time I
start Firefox, it starts in offline mode. There is also an icon in
the toolbar that says "no network connection", even though there is.
It's wired.
When I use the Firefox option to turn off "offline mode",
everything is fine, until I close/restart Firefox.
And the network connection works fine... I can always connect from other
machines via ssh, connect to it's web server etc...
What can I do to correct whatever it is that's reporting "no network
connection"?
Thanks for any suggestions.

F10 + Xfce: since yum update, File Manager (Thunar) freezes system....
by Rob
Hi,
I'm using up-to-date version of Fedora 10.
Ever since I have updated around April 19th or so, Thunar
(the file manager of Xfce) grinds the system to a stand still.
Nothing works anymore (even remote login in impossible)
and I have to power down/up to reboot.
This happens on two very different PCs of mine, so I'm
sure this is software related.
Since I did not notice this behaviour before, I tend to
believe that it has to do with a recent update.
This is very bad. I wouldn't mind if Thunar itself crashes,
but bringing the whole OS down is too dramatic and
I suspect some underlying library support to be the culprit.
Anybody else sees this?
Any idea what is the reason for this?
Thanks,
Rob.

Q about installing F10 from Live DVD
by Dean S. Messing
A colleague of mine is interested in trying Linux Fedora 10 on a new
machine he's purchased. He asked me to help him. I thought I'd try
the "Live install" of which I've read, but have never done before. It
seems like a fast way to install and time-to-install is a bit limited.
I looked at the Installation Guide at
<docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f10/en_US/index.html>
but it didn't seem to answer my questions. Maybe I missed it.
So ...
I presume that the machine will "just come up", running in-memory from
the Live Image on the DVD. (Is that right?) So, how does one get the
in-memory system onto a root partition? Does the Anaconda Installer
get involved in the process so that a "regular install" occurs using
the Live data as source?
Pointers to instructions will be appreciated.
I've copied my colleague so that he can see for himself what helpful
chaps y'all are. :-)
Thanks

Corruption of f9 man pages
by Dave Feustel
I notice spreading corruption of f9 fonts. The most recent
example is when I do 'man sshd_conf'. Ever more characters
are being replaced by strangeness as an example below shows.
AddressFamily
Specifies which address family should be used by sshd(8).
Valid arguments are âyâetâet6âyâlowAgentForwarding
Specifies whether ssh-agent(1) forwarding is permitted.
The default is âsâlowGroups
The above is copied directly from the xterm display of 'man sshd_conf'
output. Needless to say, the screwed-up character displays are
complicating my efforts to configure sshd_config across three operating
systems so they will all work with each other using ssh.

Upgrade from F9 to F11 beta (is that rawhide?)
by Cannon, Andrew C
Hi all,
I've got a F9 system at home that I like to use for my emails and office
based work that doesn't require MS office (thankfully, not much does).
I was wondering if there were any issues I should be aware of if I
wanted to upgrade from F9 to F11 beta? Should I just sack the whole
installation, apart from my /home directory, and reinstall? The system
is also running with the proprietary nVidia driver (I was hoping that
would give me 3D acceleration but it didn't seem to work).
It is running as a tri boot installation with XP and Vista selected from
the Windows boot menu after Grub times out.
TIA
Andy

Sam,
What is rc.local?
How would I change or turn off to get it to boot?
Is this an Xserver thing/display problem?

It just keeps on respawing and looping out of control...then locking.

Sam,
I was running fc5 before the upgrade and it was booting okay
leading me to think it might not be 'dectecting' properly.
How can I make it boot properly?
Should I do a full install?

Webpages load slowly
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
On some days, loading web pages load extremely slowly (half a
minute, or failure) with Firefox on a Fedora 10 machine, while two
Windows machines connected to the same router seem to be doing fine.
Any idea what might cause this?
Thanks!
Take care
Oliver
