Comment out the 4th line of /etc/pam.d/gdm so it reads:
#auth required pam_suceed_if.so user != root quiet
And log-out. 'Root' is now an acceptable user during the graphical login
as an 'Other'. (And /root/.dmrc will continue to exist if you use
it/create it.)

fglrx drivers from rpmfusion-updates-testing
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
I installed the latest fglrx drivers from updates-testing as I was
having some minor problems with the previous release. But since then
the monitor keeps flickering intermittently. Is un-installing the
current ones, and re-installing the previous drivers the only way to
roll-back, or is there a more subtle way to do this?
$ yumno list installed|egrep 'fglrx|-ati'
akmod-fglrx.x86_64 8.573-1.9.1.fc10 installed
kmod-fglrx-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-ati.x86_64 6.9.0-63.fc10 installed
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx.x86_64 8.573-1.9.1.fc10 installed
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs.x86_64 8.573-1.9.1.fc10 installed
TIA

Video playback color problem in totem or vlc
by Axel
Hello
Video playback used to be good but now color rendering isn't accurate
anymore. Blue parts are now green, green parts are violet, and so on, in
video playback . I tried totem (gstreamer backend) and VLC.
I m using nvidia driver from the livna repository.
I launched gstreamer-properties, moving the "autodected" to the X-Window
System (without Xv) entry fixes the problem, other items doesn't change
anything.
How could I fix it and use the "autodetect" entry ?
What could I have done which caused this problem ?
Thanks in advance.

F10 post installation kernel issue?
by Dan Thurman
First time F10 install went well. One thing I did
differently in installing F10 was to:
1) Use the Volume based filesystems
2) Enabled disk encryption
I noticed that on every reboot, one must enter the password
long before seeing a grub display. Hmm... maybe for a server
this is not the way to go, but for a workstation, it's probably ok.
Anyway, the initial kernel I started with is:
(1) kernel-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686
I proceeded to get the latest updates and this was approx. 1 week ago.
I later added programs I wanted installed, configured the services I wanted,
etc., etc., and everything went well. I was able to reboot, no problems.
But then a few days later, more updates came through, but specifically
a new kernel was added:
(2) kernel-2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686
Rebooting, I got the messages:
======================
ata1: ACPI get timing mode failed (AE 0x300d)
Loading /lib/kdb/Keymaps/i386/qwerty/us.map
[hang]
So, I never got to the point where I needed to enter
the encrypted disk password for continuance.
To be sure, I rebooted back to the original kernel (1),
and it booted just fine. Leaving it there, I continued using
the system, but got yet another kernel update:
(3) kernel-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686
Same problem reported in (2) above. So I am still
stuck at using my initial kernel at (1).
Is there anything I can do or to check to understand why
I am not able to use the latest kernels?
Thanks!

Problems with evolution when storing a folder on Fc10
by Gregory P. Ennis
Dear Members,ion
I am having a problem with evolution on a FC10 x86_64 machine. There
are times when evolution stalls giving me the message "Storing folder"
It usually finishes the process and returns to normal after the folder
is stored and completed, but it might take as long as 30 minutes for
this to finish. I am not using this machine for anything else other
than its use for e-mail. I usually "ssh -Y" into it from a remote site,
but these symptoms occur both during local use and remote use.
This problem did not occur with FC7 that I used on this machine before
the install of Fc10.
I have used 'atop' to evaluate what is happening when this occurs and
noticed that the DSK entry becomes very high
I would sure appreciate anyone's help.
Thank you
Greg Ennis

F10 Pulseaudio problem
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I have Audigy SB card with 5.1 speakers
Using pulseaudio I found that the produced sound sometime has glitch and I get
the following message in /var/log/messages when it happens:
pulseaudio[5501]: module-alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to
write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write! Most
likely this is an ALSA driver bug. Please report this issue to the PulseAudio
developers.
Secondly, with Pulseaudio I cannot control the volume of the "Surround" and
"Center" Speaker, only the Front with kmix. I opened pavucontrol and doesn't
find any control for the Surround / Center output either.
Thirdly, I don't know if it's related but somehow after installing the
pulseaudio stuff (I had them uninstall to troubleshoot my sound not working
earlier) and trying to play songs with amarok, X had been restarted three
times forcing me to re-login.
So, my questions are:
1. Any help with these problems ?
2. Is it possible to have working Flash plugin for Firefox with sound without
Pulseaudio ? (Last time I tried without pulseaudio I couldn't get Flash to
have sound).
Thanks.

F10 problems changing screen resolution in prefs.
by Neil Bird
I have a default screen res. of 1600x1200, but my wife prefers 1280x1024,
and has this set in her user prefs. This has worked a treat, but since
upgrading from F8 to F10, she gets a screen with horrendous flicker.
The resolution prefs. app. won't let us select anything above 60Hz (and
even them what it gives is in no way 60Hz). Similarly for me, if I try to
change the rate, I cannot [re]select the 85Hz for my res. that my monitor
tells me it is actually set to.
Ditto if I run xrandr to list available modes, so something must be a bit
stuffed in what X thinks my monitor can do.
I do have custom monitor settings in xorg.conf (with the correct scan
rates for my monitor) as otherwise it won't let me change at all.
Any thoughts, or is it ‘just’ the all-new xorg still getting things wrong?

Fedora 10, showing the details as the system boots up
by Margaret Doll
Fedora 10 when it boots up shows a sliding scale across the front.
What if I want to see what it is doing? Seeing the details is very
important if the system has difficulty in booting up completely.
