Multiple Workspace support in NVIDIA driver...
by Michael Comperchio
I realize now, after booting to windows for the first time in a while,
that the support for multiple workspace/desktop backgrounds seems to
come from the NVIDIA driver (at least on windows). So my question is
should I get the driver from the NVIDIA website and let it install
itself and rebuild a kernal? (I think that's what it's going to want to
do...) I really miss that particular feature..

samba, ldap and syncing authentication
by Michael Cronenworth
I have a Samba server acting as a PDC with Fedora Directory Server
running as the LDAP server, which holds all the users and passwords of
the domain. Everything is properly configured and running great.
Changing passwords from within a Windows machine changes both NT and
UNIX passwords.
However, I can't seem to find out how to sync NT and UNIX passwords from
a Linux client. I can set my Linux client to use LDAP auth, but it only
changes the UNIX password. I occasionally login to a Windows VM and
would like to use /one/ set of username and password credentials. I
/cannot/ have two passwords (please, don't ask why). Right now I'm
having to manually sync NT and UNIX passwords since my Linux client is
my main machine.
Yes, I know about smbldap-tools and that's what I have the PDC using,
but I'm looking for a solution that uses the system "passwd" command to
change passwords. If there is no other way, fine, just tell me and I'll
use smbldap-tools on my Linux client.
P.S. The Samba programmer who thought it would be awesome to have
separate password keeping should be shot.

REMINDER: Classroom sessions this weekend!
by Kevin Fenzi
Just a reminder to everyone... we will be holding some more IRC
classroom sessions this Saturday (2009-02-07).
See https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Classroom for more information.
We have some good classes lined up this time:
1:30 UTC Introduction to Fedora Classroom and Sessions
1:45 UTC Using Yum - Tricks and tips - Kevin Fenzi
3:00 UTC Understanding RPM - The engine behind yum - Clint Savage
4:15 UTC Fedora 11 Features - Jon Stanley
5:30 UTC Fedora i18n - Jens Petersen
6:30 UTC Fedora Classroom Wrap-up Session
As always, we are looking for folks to teach upcoming sessions.
You don't have to be an expert, just willing to teach about something
Fedora related that you know. Have you figure out some cool application
recently? Discovered how something worked? Share with the Fedora
community and teach a class on it!

I agree that the Geda suite is not very well integrated and hard to
break into. However, I have used SPICE at work for decades and found
the Ngspice simulator fairly easy to use. I'm developing my own
waveform viewer which allows arbitrary math to be performed on the
simulation waveforms:
http://www.omnisterra.com/walker/linux/post/intro.htm
For PCB layout (I'm also doing some X10 stuff!) I've been very
happy with Kicad:
http://kicad.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I've done about 10 printed circuit boards with this GPL'd tool (some 2
layer, some 4 layer) with no problems. It includes a schematic capture
tool, a footprint editor, and a PCB layout tool. The layout can be
design rule checked and compared with the schematic. Output is standard
Gerber. You can even get a 3d view of the finished board.

Glad you got it to work. I gave up on mine and I’m in the process of reloading F10 from distro, doing an update, and applying the guidance I’ve seen come out in the last few days.

Firefox Running Slow in Linux
by Marc Ferguson
Hi,
I know I'll probably get hazed by this already saturated question, but I
haven't found any solid answers to my issue from the archives. I'm running
Fedora 10 x86_64 and loving the "adventure" of running an 64 bit system.
I'm also running Firefox 3.0.x (x86_64), but I've noticed that it's not very
smooth compared to it running on a Windows machine and I'm little confused
why.
It's more the scroll bar than anything else. It's something small, but it's
ruining the surfing experience and I'm a little embarrassed to let other
people use it on my desktop. I don't want to give Linux a bad name and
these folks are primarily Windows/MAC users. So; their experience with
using Firefox on my system is a tainted one.
I've tried running Swiftfox, but I haven't gotten it to load (that's another
issue) so I'm kind of stuck with Firefox.

installing Fedora 10 from USB Disk On Key
by Mark Ryden
Hello,
I have downloaded Fedora 10 installation iso.
I want to install it from USB disk on key as my DVDrom is not working.
Will this work:
first:
dd if=linux_f10_iso.iso of=/dev/sdb and boot will start installation ?
and then boot from the USB disk on key (after setting the BIOS to boot
from USB disk on key, which is possible with my motherboard)
(/dev/sdb is my USB disk on key).
Second question:
suppose I take a live cd of Feodra 9 and then try to install fedora 10
iso (from the HD) - will such thing work?
Or **MUST** I use a live cd of the same version as the Fedora which I
want to install (namely, the live cd and the fedora iso (which is on the
disk) I am installing must be of the same version, namely fedora 10?

I'm attempting to install Fedora 10 into an LPAR on a 9133-55A, the VIO

the LV on the VIO server. DVD does pass test. Everything works up to the
point where the partitions format then the VIO server reboots

talk about your gEDA/pcb
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hello there,
There is blog post on makezine about gEDA/pcb, I would welcome you to
spread the "opensource" word about EDA software tools as comments in
this post.
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/02/remixed_drawdio.html
It is important for both the public and gEDA/gaf developers to know
that people are using gEDA/gaf tools. Currently the gEDA/gaf community
is preparing the next major release 1.6 which we are hoping to get it
in time for F-11.
Happy design.
Kind regards,
Chitlesh GOORAH
