thinkfinger for ThinkPad fingerprint scanner missing on F12?
by Suvayu Ali
Hi everyone,
I got my hands on a brand new ThinkPad in the last week. While setting
things up, I noticed that thinkfinger is missing from the F12 although
its present in the F11 repos. Is their any reasons behind this?
From my 64-bit F11 desktop:
> $ sudo yum list thinkfinger
> Available Packages
> thinkfinger.i586 0.3-9.fc11 fedora
> thinkfinger.x86_64 0.3-9.fc11 fedora
From my 32-bit F12 ThinkPad:
> # yum list thinkfinger
> Error: No matching Packages to list
All the usual repos are enabled on both machines.
If thinkfinger is not available on F12, would it be a wise decision to
install the F11 packages in F12?
Any thoughts welcome.
Happy New Year to you all. :)

XBMC for Fedora
by Rolf Fokkens
Hi!
Several people have contributed to this subject in the past: XBMC for
fedora. So far however XBMC isn't available in rpmfusion or fedora
repositories. Is there a specific reason (like licensing) for this?
Anyhow, given the fact that there isn't an XBMC RPM in one of the
mentioned repositories, I built it myself based on an RPM by Scott
Harvanek. It's here: http://rolffokkens.dyndns.org/
It's running very stable on mij x86_64 Fedora 11 system, both music and
video's run smoothly. Somehow however I can't play physical media like
DVD's and CD's, as XBMC doesn't seem te be aware of them. Could be a
libcdio-0.18 related problem.
Cheers!
Rolf
P.S. I'm using Thunderbird, and don't know how to suppress the HTML
formatting. I appologize.

Monitor doesn't turn go into powersave
by Sam Varshavchik
After updating to FC12, the monitor on one of my servers no longer turned
off when the console was idle.
This wasn't the end of the world, so I didn't give this much importance.
This weekend I had some extra time to spare, and I've now determined that if
I boot with nomodeset, the monitor properly goes into powersave mode.
That seems to be the only difference. Everything works fine either way,
except that by default DPMS does not work automatically.
I thought that, perhaps, with the oddball video card on this older server
(mach64 chipset) DPMS is not implemented when the video card is in VESA
mode, but I can run 'xset dpms force off', and the monitor goes into
powersave mode immediately.
Is this a bug, or, despite the fact that DPMS is apparently working, in VESA
mode, this may not be supported on my hardware?

Hard Drive upgrade with Fedora 12 installed
by William M. Quarles
Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade the hard drives in my computer, and I could use
some help transitioning the Fedora 12 installation that I have to the
new hard drive without reinstalling the operating systems that I have on
my computer. I have had PC DOS 2000 installed on a 6 GiB hard drive,
Windows XP Professional on a 40GB hard drive, and Fedora 12 on another
40 GB hard drive. I have purchased a 500 GB hard drive to take the place
of the two 40 GB hard drives.
The XP and the PC DOS I can handle, but I am unsure of how to transition
the Fedora 12 installation due to the fact that I know next to nothing
about SELinux, how it affects /etc/fstab since Fedora started enabling
SELinux by default years ago, nor how to copy/rebuild the /dev and /proc
trees on the new hard drive. Any help you can give me would seriously be
appreciated.
Thanks,
William

Compiz fails to start
by Matthew Saltzman
I tried starting Compiz from the Desktop Effects menu, and I just get a
pop-up saying it failed, then the desktop reverts to Metacity.
I tried from the command line ('compiz --replace') and it seems to
start, but I get no window decorations and the keyboard and mouse clicks
seem to have no effect (mouse cursor moves, but clicking does nothing;
typing does nothing, but <ctrl>-<alt>-<f2> gets me a VC, where I can
restart X).
This is stock F12, except for the binary nvidia drivers, which are from
RPMfusion. Nouveau drivers don't let me turn on Desktop Effects.
Any suggestions for debugging?
TIA.

BlueTooth in IBM T60
by Marcus Leech
I have an IBM T60, which supposedly has a Bluetooth subsystem, but with
an up-to-date F11
system, when I use the Gnome Bluetooth tool, it claims that there are
no adapters on my system.
I tried seeing if there was perhaps an ACPI file that I could
manually enable it with, but no
such luck:
[mleech@localhost ~]$ ls /proc/acpi/ibm
beep brightness cmos driver fan hotkey led light thermal video
volume
No "bluetooth" file to send an "enable" to.
Is this a known issue with the IBM/Lenovo T60 laptop?
