Re: CIFS kernel bug freeze-ups.
by Mike Yates
At
http://lists.samba.org/archive/linux-cifs-client/2007-August/002186.html
I found:-
This is a known problem that is fixed in 2.6.23-rc4. cifs_readdir()
takes a spinlock and calls a blocking function. The fix is here:
http://git.kernel.org/gitweb.cgi?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.gi...
As shown in the logs, my kernels are 2.6.25.14-69.fc8 and 2.6.25.11-97.fc9.i686
so it looks like this "should" have been fixed.
I've put it in bugzilla.

Howto prevent F9 from mounting all mountable partitions
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
I think this question has been discussed very often in the past times,
but I don't find a correspondent web link.
My question: When logging in into Gnome or KDE, all mountable partions
are mounted (even windows partitions), even if there is no correspondent
entry in /etc/fstab. This only happens when booting into initmode 5 and
logging in by Gnome/KDE.
It does not happen when booting into initmode 3 and login in into some
console.
Somebody can help?
All comments are appreciated.
Regards
Joachim Backes

Subject: Fedora 8 and 9 updates status
Date: Fri, 05 Sep 2008 09:09:10 -0700
As you well know, we have been working hard to get updates for 8 and 9
flowing again, complete with new package signing keys. Discussion has
been somewhat quiet on this front as we've all had our heads down and
have been working hard toward a solution, one that involves little to no
manual effort on behalf of our users.
Today we've reached a major milestone in this progress. We have done a
successful compose of all the existing and as of yesterday pending
updates for Fedora 8 and Fedora 9, all signed with our new keys. These
updates will soon hit mirrors in a new set of directory locations. What
we don't have quite yet is the updated fedora-release package in the old
updates location that will get you the new keys and the new repo
locations. The last mile testing of this update requires that new
updates be live on the mirrors.
Due to the size of the resigned updates, it may take a good while for
our sync process. This may delay getting the new fedora-release out
until tomorrow, but we'll be working hard on it.
While we're working on this update, we'll also be drafting a FAQ page to
explain to users what it is that we're doing, and hopefully answer some
of the questions that will come up. This document will be living
though, and as you encounter questions yourself, or questions via one of
our many avenues of support (email, IRC, forums, LUGS, etc..) please
help us in growing that document. Announcements regarding the location
of said document and how to help with content will be coming shortly.
We deeply appreciate the enormous magnitude of patience you the greater
community has shown us the Fedora project as we work though these
serious issues. It is a great testament to how wonderful it is to work
in and with the Fedora community.

by Robert-André Mauchin
Salut,
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/Huma2008_Paris). Je me suis
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/PromoBanners#Fedora_9_Release .
1, recto 2, recto 3.
Je me vois mal mettre. « Ouais PulseAudio,
suis ouvert à toutes suggestions, remarques constructives, etc.

F9: Sharing local NTFS file-systems under Samba
by Dan Thurman
I guess I need a little direction here.
I have created an NTFS partition under F9, and noticed
that this partition upon login automatically FUSE mounts
to my desktop. Ok, well, I did try to add this partition to the
fstab. this partition to my /wApp1 directory but found that
there were conflicts in doing so - so I gave up at one point and
let the FUSE do it's job.
But then later, I decided I wanted to samba-share this partition
and this is where I am perplexed.
Although, I can use Nautilus to access/change these files in the wApp1
directories, but I also noticed that all directories and files are 40777,
is set to fuse_t, and it seems that there is no possible way for me to
chcon, chown, chmod anything therein in order to samba share anything
with any granularity (usr, group, other) and noticed that selinux reports
that these dir/files are RO, cannot be shared, but that I can issue a samba
boolean to share RO files which is not what I want to do - that is - to
samba-group share the dir/files as writeable and to a list of trusted users.
I have added trusted users to /etc/samba/smbuser file - but it seems that
smbpasswd -a user has no effect (at least I cannot see where the results
are saved, if at all) and I did use the System->Administration->Samba
tool to share the specific directories, with selected users, visable &
writable
but this did not seem to work either.
I am not sure if I should let FUSE do it's work or to somehow not let FUSE
"take over" and add the NTFS file-system to fstab.
So, how should one go about properly setting up samba-shares of these NTFS
file-systems?
Thanks!

SELinux kerneloops and dhclient issues
by Stephen Croll
The "setroubleshoot browser" is reporting the following issues on Fedora 9:
SELinux is preventing kerneloops (kerneloops_t) "signal" to <Unknown>
(kerneloops_t).
SELinux is preventing dhclient (dhcpc_t) "read write" to socket
(unconfined_t).
The first issue occurs on boot. The second issue occurs when I bring up
eth0.
Should I file a bug report, or might there be something more sinister
going on?
For reference, the complete reports are as follows:
Summary:
SELinux is preventing kerneloops (kerneloops_t) "signal" to <Unknown>
(kerneloops_t).
Detailed Description:
SELinux denied access requested by kerneloops. It is not expected that this
access is required by kerneloops and this access may signal an intrusion
attempt. It is also possible that the specific version or configuration
of the
application is causing it to require additional access.
Allowing Access:
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see FAQ
(http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc5/#id2961385) Or you can
disable
SELinux protection altogether. Disabling SELinux protection is not
recommended.
Please file a bug report

against this package.

CIFS kernel bug freeze-ups.
by Mike Yates
Hi
I have some "permanent" CIFS mounts, some from a Windows server and some from a Buffalo Terastation NAS.
If changes are made to either server, even just access rights, without umounting and re-mounting, both my Fedora servers "kernel panic" and freeze - most awkward if I'm off-site. Usually there's been no trace in the logs but today I have "BUG" mentioned by the Fedora-8 box:-

While the Fedora-9 box, which also froze at 22:47 when I had changed access rights on the TeraStation, shows absolutely nothing (see below). At 22:47 I did "lsof | grep <sharename>" to see why I couldn't umount the CIFS shares on the FC8 box, having remembered to do so, while on the FC9 box, I only got as far as "df" to remind myself of the mounts. The latter had mention of CIFS on the complex "kernel panic" screen (no camera, I'm afraid) this afternoon, but a complete gap in the log:-
