Issues with network install on a Mac-based apache server
by Bruno Rebeschini
Hi,
I am trying to perform a network install of Fedora on an old machine
from an iMac that I use as a web server.
On Mac OS X, I mounted the DVD.iso and copied the content to the folder
made accessible to the network by apache.
I used the boot CD and specified the IP address of the web server, and
also the folder where the files are accessible.
The installer retrieves the first package (minstr2.img if I remember
well) and then says that the installation tree is not accessible and stops.
I have already validated that the files copied from the DVD.iso are
available from the machine - so I wonder if I need to mount the files
differently.
I looked for more info regarding network installs and tried to use the
commands:
mount -o loop /location/of/disk/space/diskX.iso /export/directory/
and also
mount -o loop -t iso9660 /location/of/disk/space/diskX.iso
/export/directory/
where /location/of/disk/space/diskX.iso and /export/directory/ are used
as examples.
(see
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/en-US/RHEL510...)
However, it does not seem to give any result on Mac OS X...
Eventually I burnt the install CDs so that I can have Fedora on my old
machine, but I think that network installs are the way forward as I just
do not want to burn so many CDs each time I want to upgrade my system.
I understand that this list is not dedicated to issues with Mac OS X but
I went on Apple forums and read some of the answers given... the
prospect of a solution from them is quite limited.
Has anyone had a similar issue by any chance?
Could someone help me progress please?
At least, I would like to understand if it's just limitations from Mac
OS X or if it's just me who is not using the ressource well.
Many thanks,
Bruno

Re[6]: ATI DRIVER installation problems - asking for help.
by Ivan Evstegeneev
Hello there!! :)))
I've done it!!! But it wasn't so easy...
Ok here the order of actions I've made:
1) Tried to "force" to re-new repos.<---- succeed
2) Checked if there are no "fglrx" "ati" survivors <--- was none.
3) Installed "xorg-x11-drv-ati xorg-x11-drivers" <---- succeed
4) Tried to install "xorg-x11-drv-fglrx"+"kmo-fglrx" <---- was sent by "yum" to china to look for some relatives.... :))) (got the same mistake)
5) Did drink 0.5L of beer (Tuborg, red label) ^_^ <---- succeed
6) Has removed all repos from "/etc/yum.repos.d/" <---- succeed
7) Also has removed all "xorg-x11-drivers"+"xorg-x11-drv-ati" <---- succeed
8) Re-tried num'- 1) <--- succeed, now there were only those repos I wanted, and nothing else.(like those from fedorafaq)
9) Re-tried num'-3) <---- succeed
10) Re-tried to install "xorg-x11-drv-fglrx"+"kmo-fglrx" one more time. <-------------SUCCEED!!!
Want to share some more issues I've encountered during the installation:
1) After installing the "livna" driver, rom has run transaction check and gave me some error output, like this one:
"file /lib/modules/2.6.23.15-137.fc8/kernel/sound/usb/snd-usb-audio.ko from install of kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i686 conflicts with file from package kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i586"
and
"file /lib/modules/2.6.23.15-137.fc8/vdso/vdso-int80.so from install of kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i686 conflicts with file from package kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i586"
and
"file /lib/modules/2.6.23.15-137.fc8/kernel/sound/usb/usx2y/sud-usb-usx2y.ko from install of kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i686 conflicts with file from package kernel-2.6.23.15-137.fc8.i586"
and so on... some more files that I couldn't remember...
What does it mean? Do I need to worry about it?
I didn't encountered with more errors when I logged out and restarted my laptop.
One more question:
2) At fedorafaq, they advised to use "init 3" ---> "fglrx-config-display enable" ----> "reboot" command for enable 3D support.
But when I tried it ("fglrx-config-display enable)", there is "no such command" message appeared.
Plz tell me my friend, how do I check if my fglrx driver installed properly (if installed at all ^_^)
And how can I enable 3d support and etc.
Tnx again for your attention and help.
Sincerely,
Ivan.

jackd core dumps
by Peter J. Stieber
I'm working with Tyan Thunder K8W (S2885) MB with Fedora 8...
Linux 2.6.23.15-137.fc8 #1 SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I was using jack-audio-connection-kit-0.103.0-5.fc8 via
qjackctl-0.3.1a-5.fc8 and it generated a few core dumps.
Should I post the problem in redhat's bugzilla or try to contact someone
from the jack project?

OT - Outlook Web access for Thunderbird. Just sharing
by Robin Laing
Hello, I just thought I would share this.
Over a year ago, our corporation made the move to Exchange server
without imap or pop access. :( This upset many, including the Windows
users.
I tried to work with Evolution from the day I was forced to change but
never got comfortable. I hated the interface (to much like Outlook) and
it was so slow to get mail. As a compromise, I would get my mail with
Evolution and export it to TB to read.
Over the year I looked at other options. I came across this nice little
JAVA application that will get the mail through webDAV and save it as an
mbox file. Now I don't have to even touch Evolution to get my email.
http://personal.inet.fi/atk/fetchexc/
fetchExc - fetches mail with webDAV from MS Exchange 2000/2003 servers
I hope that something like this can be incorporated into TB.
Hope it helps someone else.

3D collabrative net applications and Linux/Fedora
by Ric Moore
I've been Looking into 3D applications for our project, for some time,
and so far this is what I've found usable, to varying degrees, with
Linux and, better yet, found workable with Fedora 7.
Croquet:
http://croquetconsortium.org/
Croquet is pretty brutal for first time users, to put it mildly. It
works, no doubt, as I've had it running for almost a year. But user
friendliness and creation tools are not at the head of the list. Think
of it as the 3D graphical version of Emacs. Croquet is built on Squeak
which is built on Small-talk. So, basically, you're running another OS
on top of Linux. That makes it slower than if it were native to Linux.
There is some measure of hope on the near horizon though. Qwaq, which is
a commercial effort variant of Croquet, consisting of the former
University developers, is up and running and may port some of their
improvements and client-side apps to Croquet. Their version is a
screamer as a online 3D collaborative tool. It's just not "Free" as
Croquet is. They do have a good user and devel mail lists, but much of
it is way over my head. I may be granted a limited look a Qwaq and I'll
post what I find here.
SecondLife:
Open Source client for Linux. I've had it working pretty well, although
I confess to using their beta-Linux client from them instead of the rpm.
Major draw-back, no Linux server. Right, there IS one effort to reverse
engineer the server and there is a Linux version of that. It requires
full blown Mono and, as usual, some conflicts as to what is Java and
what ain't plus various obscure Mono libs. It uses some kind of brew
from hell, Mono and Java, from what I can figure out, and they have to
be in sync, version-wise. Please feel free to correct me, I'm poking at
it with a stick, monkey fashion. There are rumors of really opening up
the server side software, which would be a huge plus, as they already
run Linux, for server side, on their host farms. They have streaming
video, but there are some gotchas using Linux. It shows a lot of promise
though.
Uni-Verse:
http://www.uni-verse.org/Uni-verse-Home.72.0.html
I just dnloaded it yesterday and have not unpacked the linux tarball of
binaries, yet. mc didn't reveal any source code that I could recognize
in the tarball. It seems to have server, a crude client and devel tools
all built in to it. I'll let everyone know how well this one works. It
looks somewhat promising from their press at the site.
http://www.multiverse.net/index.html
Free server for Linux!! That's a plus! The minus is that the client is
only for WinXP and up. <sighs> I got the server to work, I think, as the
terminal window messages claimed everything was OK. I'd sure like to SEE
the damn thing though. It just grabs my socks when server-side
applications use Linux to beat the M$ networking licensing schemes, but
run back to Windows so they can code in C#. Some one just shoot me. They
emailed me and said that they will have a linux client in about a year.
<sighs> Peachy.
Sauerbraten:
http://www.sauerbraten.org/
I'm gonna mention this as it runs and serves a 3D realm under Linux and
has nifty user friendly design tools. It almost meets my needs for swift
development and lower server side requires. Used as a client, the client
side dnloads all of the game data files, at first, which lowers the
overhead on the server. Graphics are great and the speed beats that of
the other 3D environments hands down, especially for a light-weight
low-budget 3D server application. It lacks streaming video though, but
maybe someone could figure out how to serve video as it already plays
sound files in either ogg or mp3 formats.
Note: If you just filed your taxes and want to do some senseless killing
of BEMS, while saving the Universe, grab this one. I also suggest
dnloading Mark Pullens free-to-use musical files to "pump it up". His
stuff makes Metallica sound like Donnie and Marie. Those head-banger
track-files has this 58 year-old burning his imaginary Fender
Stratocaster in front of a stack of imaginary shrieking Marshall amps
while bending the imaginary tone-arm and going "NEEE YEOOOOW!", like
Jimi Hendrix. Yeah, they're THAT good, IMHO.
<coughs, slicks hair back down and regains composure>
If anyone has any other applications they use for 3D WITH streaming
audio/video, I'd like to explore any other candidates. User friendly 3D
creation tools for Linux are really needed. Thanks, Ric

IBM KB-7953 keyboard isn't working with F8 in Gnome, but did in X...
by Gilbert Sebenste
Hello all,
I just installed F8 here and I can only get the numeric keypad to work. It
is a non-USB keyboard. I go to
System > Preferences > Hardware > Administration
And have tried the generic keyboards, but none work. Also, I have tried
the IBM options, even though they don't match my keyboard; they don't work
eitehr. I used to have a dialog box on bootup if I should choose what X
found versus what Gnome found; I chose Gnome and now the keyboard no
longer works (it did when X found it, and now I don't know how to get it
back to what X windows found, or to get that dialog box back to change
it). Mouse is fine. Another identical keyboard displays the exact same
problem.
Any ideas?

Archive Search
by max
Is there anyway to search the archives by subject line or keywords? I am
looking for info on setting up a Verizon Broadband card on a laptop running
F8. Modems seem to be the bane of my existence lately. Anyway i do not see a
way to search by subject ( i hope i am just blind because scrolling through
the lists would take forever) my first idea was to download the zipped files
and then just search with grep but that would that takes time and i am no
master grepper and of course i needed this done yesterday. Ideas??
Thanks,
Max

OT: vi(m) advise.
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I've got a certain vim script that handles projects.
E.g.
"project project_name" translates to:
"gvim "+set tags=list_of_tag_files" file1 file2 ... Makefile"
A. I want to add tags support. E.g.:
"project project_name +tag" translates to:
"gvim "+set tags=list_of_tag_files" file1 file2 ... Makefile -t tag"
However, I'm getting a "Too many edit arguments: "-t"" error.
What am I doing wrong?
B. I want to add open_file support. E.g.:
"project project_name -fileX" translates to:
"gvim "+set tags=list_of_tag_files" file1 file2 ... Makefile", jump to
fileX
Can it be done?

No sound with flash plugin
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I use F8, KDE 3.5.8, Firefox 2.0.0.12. I have pulseaudio and the KDE
pulseaudio RPMs installed. Amarok, Totem, Mplayer, Vlc and Skype all
work fine.
I'm using flash-plugin-9.0.115.0 from Adobe, installed via Yum, but I
get no sound from Flash videos such as youtube.com.
Any ideas?
