installation postgres
by Rafnews
Hi,
using the GUI version of add/remove software from F10 under Gnome i tried to
install postgresql 8.3.5.
i can see the client and server package are checked in this GUI version, but
i do not find any folder where it is installed.
basically the postgresql.conf file is located somewhere after
installation...but in my case is nowhere :-(
what's wrong ? is anything OK in F10 regarding PostgreSQL installation ?
if i download the bin file from www.postgresql.org page, installation works
perfectly, so what's wrong with GUI add/remove software ?
thx.

error libata?
by Peter Lesterhuis
A short time after booting (F10) keyboard en mouse are freezing. When I
get the time to open a terminal I see this in /var/log/messages:
...

I found some information about these messages on
http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Libata_error_messages.
I booted with the options: "noapic", or "acpi=off" or "pci=nomsi", but
none of them are useful.
Does this mean I have an issue with the hard disk or the SATA-controller?
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Advice to an audiophobe ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
I have avoided sound technology most of my life. I have a 'tin ear' and
most music just sounds to me like somebody talking in an annoying voice.
However, recent problems with alsa mixer and/or pulseaudio has convinced
me that the time has come to spend some time learning the rudiments of
sound technology. So ...
Can someone recommend a site or manual that explains things like:
* What is the difference between alsa and pulseaudio?
* Which should I choose for the Device: field?
* What is the difference between Master, PCM, Front, Line-in, CD,
PC-Speaker etc. ?
* How is sound related to video ?
* Why are there so many files associated with producing sound?
* Etc., etc., etc.? ?
I have googled, searched Wikipedia, read the PulseAudio documentation as
well as Gnome Help. It all still leaves me befuddled -- either too
simple or two technical. Once I try to throw in the concept of various
'codecs' I am lost.
I am not asking for a personal explanation of the above questions (I
have a bunch more) but all learning suggestions gratefully received.

Hi,
i tried to update my current version of system-config-network-1.5.94-2 to

what i do not understand is that the "system-config-network-tui =
1.5.93-2.fc10" was already installed by the F10 media during F10 default
installation.
so where is the problem ?
thanks

Where is dvb-utils for Fedora 8?
by Rick Bilonick
I am using Fedora 8 with a usb HDTV tuner. It works great with xine (I
copied the channels.conf file from another computer), but I cannot get
kaffeine to work. Kaffeine sees the tuner (/dev/dvb/adapter0) but in dvb
configure, the "source" box is always empty - it should show the atsc
scan frequency list that is provided and exists in the appropriate
directory. (Kaffeine works perfectly in Ubuntu 8.10 on another laptop
using the same tuner.) Without the source, Kaffeine can't scan for ATSC
digital channels. It won't let you type in a path and file name.
I thought possibly that the dvb-utils package was needed (installed for
Ubuntu), but I cannot find an rpm (doesn't show up when using yumex).
This package includes the "scan" utility and several others.
Any idea on what is going wrong with Kaffeine? The computer is
completely up-to-date and I tried uninstalling and re-installing
kaffeine.

static IP under F10
by Rafnews
Hi,
i have setup a static IP for my F10 computer (which will be use later as DB
server for test development).
therefore i modify the following 3 files:
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
i setup my mask to 255.255.255.0 as usual and after i reboot F10.
after login as user, F10 as setup eth0 inactive. when i press the button
activate, eth0 is activated but the mask turns to my default gateway
address... and internet does not work.
where is the problem ?
i'm sure that this IP address is free and works if i use it on windows OS.
thx a lot.

F9: Vnc's desktop window prevents right-side toolbar access
by Dan Thurman
I noticed while doing a remote Vnc session that my Vnc
desktop is showing the right-side scrollbar covering my
right-side pop-out toolbar - thus preventing any access
to it.
Tried this in various window sizes and all performs the
same way.
Thanks
