Fedora 10 preview installation issues
by Ben Greear
I'm trying to install F-10-preview (as of Nov 6, 2008) on an HP 2133
notebook.
I downloaded the CDROM isos and put them on an NFS server.
First problem was that we didn't find a 'diskboot.img' file
(this netbook has no CDROM, so we're booting off of USB).
We used live-USB creator on windows on the net-cd ISO, and
that boots.
In graphical mode, the video driver is hosed, so I tried
to use text. There wasn't an obvious grub entry, so I
just edited the default boot line adding 'text' after it.
On FC8, when booting from NFS, you could just give it the
directory that had the .iso images and it would figure out
everything. That did not work in this case: I had to
mount loop the CD1 iso and copy it to a directory (_cd1) and specifically
use that so that it could find the images/boot.img
When that was done, it continued to boot, and gave the option of VNC. I tried that,
and it said: "Please manually connect your vnc client to 0.0.0.0:1 ..."
It should have given me the IP address (on eth1, perhaps it was looking
at eth0?) I found my IP by looking at the dhcp server logs and
correctly connected DHCP.
After a while, it needed rpms from the other CDs and couldn't find them.
I loop-mounted the other CDs and copied the Packages/* files to the _cd1/Packages
directory.
Still installing, but have to go for now...
Thanks,
Ben

Help with KDE 4.2 NetworkManager - VPN
by Kevin Kempter
Hi All;
I'm trying to setup a cisco style PN connection. when I try and connect I get
this:
The VPN connection 'test1' failed because the vpn service stopped unexpectedly
I setup the vpn connection like this:
Gateway: set to the client's vpn gateway (I.P.)
I set the group name & domain to what was the local & remote identifiers in
the cisco connection on my mac.
I also show a pre-shared key on the mac but I see no place for this on the
Network Manager VPN setup.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

No info when mouse over files/dir's with Konqueror on F9
by Nigel Henry
I've already asked this here, and on the KDE list, but with no replies.
On KDE 3.5.9, when hovering the mouse over a file, or directory in Konqueror's
file manager, I get a popup showing info for the file/dir, and at the same
time, a line at the bottom of Konquerors window showing the same info.
For example. If the file/dir is a link, it shows where it's pointing to.
With F9, I have to right click, and access the properties to get this info,
which if you're checking out the links on multiple files, like I am doing in
trying to resolve a Java problem, it can be very time consuming.
is this supposed to work on F9 KDE4, as it did on KDE3?
A simple yes or no will do.
Nigel.

fglrx for F9.x86_64
by Kevin Cummings
I just noticed that there is an fglrx for the latest F9 x86_64 kernel in
the new RPMFusion repos. So I installed it.
I got the following message in my Xorg.log, and googleearth and most
full screen videos run like crap:
> (EE) AIGLX error: fglrx exports no extensions (/usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driDriverExtensions)
> (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
Is this a knowm problem, or is my setup broken?

Re: gdm error messages
by Steve Blackwell
I posted this a few days ago but haven't had any takers. Do I have to subscribe to another, gdm, list?
Now I find that if I let the screensaver and then power management kick in, when I try to wake the computer up again, I get a very brief text screen that says something about starting the disks but it's too quick to read, and then nothing. I can't Ctrl-Alt-F1 and my only option is to reboot via the power switch.
The pm-suspend.log shows that the computer did wake up OK.

Any suggestions?

I was suprised to find that this did not work. Is this because gdm doesn't have a login shell? I tried adding my group to a different user, logging on as that user and then writing to the gnome-screensaver directory and had no problems.

Sorta OT - way to make Thunderbird set *all* folders to threaded view?
by thomas cameron
Howdy -
I have messed around with all the settings I can find to no avail. I
use IMAP so all my messages are on the server in a metric buttload of
folders (well over 100). I check mail from numerous systems, many of
which get rebuilt regularly. It is a royal PITA to have to go through
every time I run Thunderbird the first time on a new system to have to
tell it to view by threads. For. Every. Single. Folder.
Is there a way to make Thunderbird view all folders threaded by default?
Anything, an advanced setting or a plugin, would be great.
The Google gods are not forthcoming. :-( And no, I am not looking for
the numerous articles on keeping in threaded view when you re-sort. I
want everything in threaded view by default for all folders.

Vampire Instance of Kaffiene becomes Kaf-fiend
by R. G. Newbury
I tried to play something with Kaffeine, then used File->Quit to dismiss
it. IT KEEPS COMING BACK! When I boot the machine (Thinkpad T40 Fedora
8) I get an instance of Kaffeine. (I have on occasion also gotten an
instance of Firefox). This is with clean shutdowns, not forced power-down.
Where is this information stored, and how do I stop it?
