VDQ : machine names??
by Beartooth
I know it's a Very Dumb Question; I just can't find a general
answer that works.
I want to stop calling all the machines on my LAN
localhost.localdomain, and give them distinctive names. I have found two
or three ways of doing so; but they don't stick.
The only way that really works, for me at least, is to think of
it (and be ready) while doing a fresh install. When anaconda asks me
whether to use dhcp, I can click on manual, type in a name, click back to
using dhcp, and that name lasts.
I'm not even sure now whether it's mere logging out and back in,
or just actual reboots that do it, but in a location subject to longer
power failures than the UPSs I can afford will ride out, I get enough
reboots, too (alas!).
One other way that I've tried is to use system-config-network,
and edit the configuration of eth0; but that seems to be little more than
a pacifier. I want something that shows up in the prompts, and that I can
use in ssh and scp, without having to look up IP numbers on the router
all the time -- especially since not all LAN machines are on one floor.
Clue, please? Pretty please?

F8: no fullscreen video with ATI fglrx driver
by wwp
Hello there,
since I use the fglrx driver in my Fedora 8 (Dell D810, X600 ATI board,
was using the radeon driver before), I can't get mplayer or xkype to
display a video in fullscreen. Pressing F in mplayer just does paint
the original size video in a black fullscreen. I think it's an issue I
could solve long time ago in my FC3 or FC5, but now I'm stuck with it.
Is there something I missed? Any hint appreciated..
The following rpms are installed:
kernel-2.6.26.3-14.fc8
kmod-fglrx-8.512-2.8.07.lvn8
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.512-1.8.07.lvn8
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-8.512-1.8.07.lvn8
Excerpts from my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
mplayer says:
[VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read
[VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
[VO_XV] See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
[VO_XV] Try -vo x11.
Running `mplayer -vo x11 ...` doesn't help there.

Java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin problem - (x86-64)
by Trapper
I have been trying to resolve a java related issue with the java Firefox
plugin since the release of Fedora 10 Alpha x86_64. I am now using F10
Beta x86_64 and the difficulty still persists.
I have:
java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.21.b12.fc10 (x86_64)
java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin (x86_64)
firefox 3.0.2 (x86_64)
kernel-2.6.27-0.352.rc7.git1.fc10 (x86_64)
My problem:
The java plugin works but it does not work here:
http://www.goes.noaa.gov/HURRLOOPS/huirloop.html
This is a radar time loop java applet with 10 sequential frames.
Although the progress bar shows the frame progress, the frames do not
switch. Only the first frame is displayed. There is no animation of the
radar display.
This exact difficulty was also prevalent in F8 and F9. One fix was Sun
JRE and the following "adjustments":
yum install compat-libstdc++-* libXp
sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g' $YOURPATHTOTHISJREFILE/libmawt.so
In x86_64 I've been unable to find any sort of fix that allows proper
viewing of the above mentioned page. Any ideas other than reverting back
to the 32 bit browser and/or Sun JRE? At last check Sun JRE did not have
a 64 bit plugin.

Trash applet
by Antonio M
In my F10 I don't have the Trash applet in the list of applets that
can be added to the panel...on another system I have it.
How can I add Trash applet??
And how can I had the Trash voice in the menu?? (I think in the
Resources Menu)...
The only area where I have the Trash is the desktop.
And should I see a Trash folder in my /User/ folder????
Tnx

F10: a few issues and suggestions
by Marcelo Garcia
Hi
Yesterday I installed F10 and a few issues:
1) After checking the dvd, it ejected and when I inserted it back to
continue the installation, there was a message saying that the there was
no medium. I had to reboot and skip the checking to continue the
installation.
2) At the end of installation, the dvd didn't ejected as expected.
Suggestions:
3) I really liked the icons, but that default background (I think is the
same in F9 and in the login screen) is horrible. I suggest to use "flow"
as default background.
4) I liked the "silk"(?) background. If there could be a theme using it
would be good. In certain way, something like the ubuntu theme, which I
think if very elegant.
5) I also suggest to borrow as an extra theme the the gnome look of
Opensuse 11. I don't know if I'll use, but at least is a interesting.
Thanks for your attention.

Until FC8 it was so, but in FC9 is different !!!
I were looking for "/etc/modprobe.conf", but I didn't found it.

When I composed the email reply, I made a particular point of saying which window manager I was using:
as follows:

Yes I know how to start/configure a service. I already use httpd and mysqld. Being a programmer I have programmed services.
I saw the term "network manager" and decided to educate myself.
Somewhere somebody said "network manager" was a new addition so I decided to learn about it.
Whether or not I need it is immaterial. After I learn about it I may later need it.
Simple?
