A couple kvm questions.
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I thinking about dropping vmware server and replacing it with KVM. (I'm
using brand new AMD Opterons and Intel Xeon so kvm_intel and kvm_amd
should be supported)
I'll be virtualizing Linux (Fedora, RHEL, CentOS), Windows (XP, 2K3,
2K8) and FBSD.
I've got a couple of questions: (I've google for most of them but
couldn't really find a satisfying answer)
A. I already converted my VM's to qemu (using qemu-img) and they are
working OK (minus networking). How can I import these qemu raw images
into virt-manager?
B. I require bridged networking on all my VMs. I already did the manual
job (as in creating ifcfg-br? for each ifcfg-eth? and creating the
bridge); never the less, what am I missing is: 1. Do you need to create
a different tun/tap device node for each VM? 2. Any method to automate
the tun/tap device node creation (and ownership) under Fedora?
C. Has anyone managed to get widescreen support under qemu/qemu-kvm?

compiz with OpenGL video solution
by David Hláčik
Hello guys,
are there any news around making compiz work correctly with OpenGL or
others video outputs?
Currently only X11 video works for me, as all others are blinking.
I have Fedora 9 i386 with latest updates and ATI driver from livna.
Is this fixed in compiz in Fedora 10? or in rawhide?
Thanks for pointing me on solution.
Regards,
David

Finding a Font to Support a Unicode Block (X11)
by Michael Rohan
Hi Folks,
Just posted this to comp.fonts, but figured I should try here also.
Not sure if this is the correct group, but I have code that generated
Unicode strings displayed via Java on X Windows. The strings include
characters from the Enclosed Alphanumerics Unicode block. On one
Linux system (where I've installed every font package I could find),
the strings display as expected. On another Linux (default) system,
they display as little squares, i.e., missing.
Is there a way to directly identify the font needed to support a
particular Unicode block?
Take care,
Michael.

Option Globetrotter HSDPA Modem
by mike bjork
Hello :)
Love Fedora Linux but unfortunately forced back to XP because the company who created my usb-modem (Option Globetrotter HSDPA Modem) are Microsoft engvalist's (hope spell right :) and only support Windows (and perhaps Mac).
I tested tips from PHARscape and usb_modeswitch from Draisberghof, still my usb modem are recognize as a usb stick and even a CD-reader!!!! I use the latest kernel!
Someone who know this problem or do I have to write my one driver for this (*#! :(,,,, self-censorship) modem!!!
Keep up the good work with Fedora and other Linux distributions :)
Mvh Mike!

Greater than 2TB disks bootable?
by Phil Meyer
There is a lot of confusion available from articles on the Internet
about whether or not a greater than 2TB disk can be made bootable in Linux.
In order to go that large, the disk must be labelled, via partd, as type
GPT.
Ok so far.
Now, is it possible to use fdisk to cut off 100MB or so for a normal
/boot partition?
It seems that labelling a disk as GPT does not stomp the MBR, but does
affect the partition table. Is this correct?
If I create a 100MB partition using fdisk, and then label the disk as
GPT, can I start the large partition with the first cylinder > than what
I cut off for /boot and expect it to be seen?
Anaconda complains that GPT is not bootable. Is that system specific,
BIOS specific, anaconda error reading the BIOS, ???
Here is the specific scenario:
An intel based server, with 10 1TB drives attached to a SATA RAID
device. The RAID is level 5 with 9 drives and a hot spare.
What the system sees, is one device of ~8TB.
Is it possible to boot from the device, AND have all but /boot as one
large partition?
Thanks!

Mysteries of pulseaudio
by Timothy Murphy
Sound is working fine for me
on my Fedora-9 Thinkpad T43,
but when I boot I get the message
that pulseaudio is not working,
and sound is reverting to (I think) ac97.
I see in /var/log/messages the messages
Aug 23 10:22:46 carrie pulseaudio[2317]:
pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug 23 10:22:46 carrie pulseaudio[2317]:
main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
However, pulseaudio daemon does not appear to be running now.
This seems to be a purely academic question,
but I'd be interested to know
(a) why pulseaudio is not running, and
(b) whether this matters?
