Package Updater fails on dependency failure, but dependency is there
by Eric
Good morning, all.
First of all, I'm certain this question has been addressed before but I
cannot find any way to search the archives... only thing that's available
is to call up each archive individually, open each thread individually that
looks like it might contain useful information, and read.
Isn't there a way to search the archives on keyword?
Now, my main question... attempting to use Package Updater to update my F7
installation on VMware (which has always worked well before) and got "Error
resolving dependencies". Clicked on Details and got "Missing Dependency
firefox=2.0.0.4 is needed by package Democracy".
First of all, what the heck is package Democracy? I tried to find it in
the list of stuff to be updated, so that I could deselect it and update
everything else, and it wasn't there.
Mainly, though ... I HAVE Firefox 2.0.0.4. How do I convince Package
Updater that I have what it says it needs?

updated kernel panics with dhcp
by Joe Smith
Yep, me too.
I finally rebooted just to see if I had any problems from the update,
and sure enough, my system panics when eth0 is started, after printing
"Determining IP information for eth0...".
If I boot with the modem powered off, it's fine, but as soon as I run
"service network start" I get a kernel panic.
I rebooted several times trying different tactics, and I did have one
instance when I got eth0 to come up cleanly, but about four other times
when it paniced, always at the same place.
Sorry--no useful log messages. The final line on the screen was
something like "Fatal Exception in interrupt, not syncing".

Re: F7 Kernel 2.6.22.1-33.fc7 Scanner
by J M

Scanners can be a real pain to deal with, especially when using saned to
connect from remote hosts.
I have my scanner/printer attached to my linux desktop. From there I
have saned set up so that I scan from the linux computer itself, or from
mine or my wifes laptop using the xsane mac/windows ports.
The only place the scanner will work correctly, by default, is the
desktop itself.
I went ahead and created a user 'saned' to login the saned daemon using
the nologin shell, and configured saned.conf to allow the desired hosts
to connect, and then xinetd to listen for saned requests.
I had to basically do the same as listed above except mine ended up
being root.saned. When the console.perms runs it changes the owner from
root to whoever is logged in, but fortunately leaves the group as saned.
This allows sane to work from any of the computers I want. Mild headache
to set up the first time, but now it just works.
There may be a simpler way, but that was the best I was able to figure
out... definitely not intuitive, but doable.

install problem (from DVD)
by Michael Klinosky
I was installing F7 from DVD, but it has screeched to a halt. It tried
to install BackupPC, but either it's corrupted or absent. I checked it
prior to using it - passed.
Is this a known problem? Or, perhaps I just need to reburn it (or
redownload it).

JibJab - no sound - wrong sound card.
by Reg Clemens
OK, this was working but it has stopped.
For a long time videos on CNN had never worked.
Then, several weeks ago they started working.
And then several weeks more and the AUDIO stopped but the video was fine.
For some reason, today I decided to go to jibjab, and lo, the same behaviour.
I see the video, but no audio. Now this has ALWAYS worked.
And my suspision is that I have a built in sound card (intel) on the
motherboard,
and add on sound card (sound blaster) and the jibjab (and probably the CNN) are
connecting to the WRONG ONE (the intel).
Changing the connection to the other output, and lo I have audio.
So how do I tell the world which is the default sound card?
Or how do I tell individual programs what is the default sound card?
I dont see anything in jibjab nor in the netscape that it is running in
Mumph.
Grump.

NTFS Disks?
by Knute Johnson
I saw a package get updated the other day, ntfs-3g. I went to their
website to check it out. They had procedures there for mounting NTFS
partitions. I haven't payed any attention to NTFS in quite a while but
the last thing I remember was that it wasn't safe to write to NTFS
partitions from Linux. Is that still true? Is this ntfs-3g driver safe
to use on my Winblows XP partition? Should my NTFS partitions
automount? How do I make it work when my computer starts up?
Thanks very much,

Re: computer name on a LAN
by Michael Klinosky
Andy:

I didn't meant to imply that I'm going to use rcp as a substitute for
rsync (which I got from your response). It's just that I wanted to learn
something simple before I dive into rsync.
Also, I'll probably need rcp at some point (could've used it several
times already).
> AFAIK rcp bulk transfer is not encrypted, whereas with rsync-over-ssh it

Actually, I'm not concerned about encryption - it's on my LAN. I intend
to use the standard method with rsync.
