How Do I Switch to KDE from Gnome with Fedora 7?
by Tom Browder
When I installed F7 I did so from DVD and the Gnome desktop was
loaded. That was fine with me since I have always like the look
better. However, xemacs is not working properly due to something not
working between it and metacity, and reports are that the KDE desktop
doesn't have the same problem. So when I looked for the login
switcher I'm used to, no KDE!
Now I've found that I could have installed the KDE desktop through the
Live CD, but how do I install it now?
I've tried
yum list "*desktop*"
and others but find nothing there.
Is there a way to switch without going though another install?
Thanks.

Subject: Fedora 7 & VM Server
Hi list,
I encounter some issues for installing Fedora 7 under VMware Server
(1.0.1.29996)
Host OS = Windows 2003 STD edition 64bits SP1
Installation setup as follows:
<SNIP>
Try using VMware Buglogic SCSI interface when creating the drive.
Leo,
I choose the IDE adapter and the install looks ok for the time being (still
in progress.)
Thanks anyhow

custom partitioning
by Michael Klinosky
I just got another computer, and I'm stalled in the partitioning
department. I decided to forgo LVM, so I have some questions.
Does it matter in which order I create the partitions? Like, should I
create /boot first?
On the 'Add partition' window is a checkbox: 'Force to be a primary
partition'. What's this? (It's not mentioned in the Installation docs.)
Do any partitions need it?

iwl4965 + NetworkManager / wpa_supplicant Problem
by Dmitry Ananyev
Hi everybody
I have laptop with intel 4965agn wireless adapter inside. And Fedora 7
x86_64 , kernel 2.6.22-33, latest from updates.
The problem is that the NetworkManager (and wpa_suppliant too) can not
connect to the wireless network with such error in /var/log/messages
Jul 28 16:09:36 localhost kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
But it is not always happen. Sometimes it works. And i found that the
wireless always work if:
1) in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf i use ap_scan = 2
2) service wpa_supplicant start
3) in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf i change ap_scan value to 1
(ap_scan = 1)
4) service wpa_supplicant restart
and it works always like it should.
If i do not change wpa_supplicant.conf - the wireless not work. Thats very
strange for me.
The Kde NetworkManager applet cant connect too. But i can not change ap_scan
in networkmanager applet So this is harder to use. It works only if:
1) in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf i use ap_scan = 2
2) service wpa_supplicant start
3) service wpa_supplicant stop
4) In kde network manager upplet i connect to wireless netrowk (and in
/var/log/messages there is such record:
Jul 28 16:09:37 localhost NetworkManager: <info> SUP: sending command
'AP_SCAN 1'
So, i can connect to wireless network only if i try to connect with
ap_scan=2, and right after that i try to connect with ap_scan=1.
I have two questions:
1) How can i change AP_SCAN value in NetworkManager ?
2) How can i fix the problem with my wireless adapter?
I'm trying to get following result:
1) I do not use "service wpa_supplicant start" at all
2) I connect to wireless network with only KNetworkManager applet
Please help :-(

by Mike Chalmers
I am thinking of trying this way to install Fedora Core 7. Do y'all
recommend this way? Where is a link to install for the minimal boot
media installation ISO?
Thanks,

Adept and apt-rpm
by Matthew Flaschen
I'm new to this list as well as BLAG, the Fedora-based distribution that
primarily uses apt-rpm, so hello everyone. I'm wondering, what do
people know about the use of Adept with apt-rpm. I see a recent post
(http://web.mornfall.net/blog/adept_2.2_on_fedora.html) indicating it
has been compiled for read-only use, which would already be useful to me
(I use KDE, find Synaptic annoying, and mostly use apt-get on the
command-line for actual installations or removals).

Stuck in UTC
by Jorgen Jonsson
I switched from UTC=false to UTC=true in /etc/sysconfig/clock and then
I changed back to UTC=false. Now every time I boot up, gdm and
gnome-clock is showing UTC-time and also gnome-clock isn't updating
until system-time has cought up. "date" is showing the correct time
(Wed Jul 25 18:07:22 CEST 2007). Also /var/log/messages has the
UTC-time. So for two hours the time stands still at every upboot.

USB Audio Devices "disabling" onboard sound cards
by Sean Bruno
I purchased a USB Turntable(Bus 001 Device 002: ID 08bb:2900 Texas
Instruments Japan) and rebooted my machine.
Lo and behold, I no longer have access to my sound card(00:04.0
Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio
Controller (rev a2)). It is not even listed in system-config-soundcard.
If I disconnect the USB Turntable and reboot, my audio device becomes
available again.
Taking a look at my modprobe.conf shows an oddity:
options snd cards_limit=8
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-usb-audio index=0
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
The snd-intel8x0 is aliased to snd-card-0, but it doesn't appear. Quite
strange indeed.
Seems like a minor bug here as the same thing happens with my USB
headset and my USB webcam(it has a microphone in it).
Any ideas?
