FC7 yum upgrade
by Catalin Bucur
Hello,
I have made an upgrade with yum from FC6 to FC7 on a i686 system with
IDE drives. Everything worked ok, but I realized after upgrade that in
/etc/fstab I had /dev/hdX entries instead of LABELs. After reboot I got
the message:
Creating root device
Mounting root filesystem
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root/'
Setting up other filesystems
Setting up new root fs
setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory
no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Switching to new root and running init.
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys
switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
At that point I have tried to make all the modifications necessary to
boot again with this kernel. Now, the situation looks like:
-> fdisk
/dev/sda1 1 126 1012063+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 127 2228 16884314+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda2: LABEL="Cata" UUID="ebfbf39f-558d-4d30-b143-9e581bf41f77"
SEC_TYPE="ext2" TYPE="ext3"
/dev/sda1: TYPE="swap" LABEL="swap"
-> /etc/fstab
LABEL=Cata / ext3 defaults 1 1
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
LABEL=swap swap swap defaults 0 0
-> /boot/grub/grub.conf
default=0
timeout=7
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora (2.6.21-1.3194.fc7)

initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7.img
-> /boot/grub/device.map
(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd0) /dev/sda
-> I have made another initrd file /boot/initrd-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7.img
which had the folowing entries:
resume LABEL=swap
echo Creating root device.
mkrootdev -t ext3 -o defaults,ro sda2
echo Mounting root filesystem.
mount /sysroot
echo Setting up other filesystems.
setuproot
echo Switching to new root and running init.
switchroot
-> at the boot time I saw that ata_piix driver loaded ok:
<7>ata_piix 0000:00:1f.1: version 2.10ac1
<7>PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.1 to 64
<6>ata1: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x000101f0 ctl 0x000103f6 bmdma
0x0001f000 irq 14
<6>scsi0 : ata_piix
I even tried to upgrade the system again with FC7 DVD, it was installed
the kernel, made his initrd, but no success at reboot. With FC7 rescue
cd it is booting ok, so I do not understand what is the problem with his
kernel from distribution (which is the default - 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7).
Thank you for your time,

Sort files by filename
by Mark Haney
This is really a general linux question. I have a series of files in a
format like this:
XXXX20070515_112011_942_10.bz2
XXXX20070515_112011_942_12.bz2 etc,
and I am trying to find a way to do 2 things, one, sort these files in
order, and then once in order, find the files that are numerically
missing based on the last 2 numbers in the file name. So if I have (as
above I want to know that file XXXX20070515_112011_942_11.bz2 is
missing. Can someone get me started on this, I'm stumped.

cpu speed problem
by fedora
Hi listers
here is a laptop with
[root@myhost ~]# cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)
[root@myhost ~]#
worked well until 10 days ago. then, the laptop started its fan, and
drove down its cpuspeed to about a quarter of the speed before. if i run
the system-monitor, the cpu is busy always about 30 %, whereas before it
was busy only about 6 %.
The fan from then on is never stopped and the CPU stays low in
performance from then on. i have to do a power down (either pm-hibernate
or halt/reboot) in order to make it come up with the "full" performance
and stay there for a while. after that, the fan starts again and the cpu
slows down.
after some googling i tried the following:
[root@myhost ~]# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
997500
[root@myhost ~]# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
731500
[root@myhost ~]# echo "997500"
>/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed
[root@myhost ~]# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
997500
[root@myhost ~]#
i also changed the parameters of the cpuspeed program, so that now it
comes up with:
1413 ? Ss 0:01 cpuspeed -d -p 90 45 -m 731500 -M 997500 -n
all to no avail.
i also checked to see, whether in the BIOS the intelCPUstepping is
enabled, and it is enabled.
i understand, that the fan at a certain point in time starts turning.
but i don't understand, why at the same time, the cpu slows down.
has anyone got an idea, where this immediate change stems from and how i
could stop it?
thanks in advance for any reply

Re: Where Did It Go? A Re-Post
by Mercury Morris
> How do you mean "fail to recognize the drive" when you are also saying
> you get a /dev/sdb1 created? That sounds like the drive is recognized fine.
On my system, I have four Western Digital SATA drives - /sda thru /sdd.
When the system boots with no disk in the drive, /dev/sde shows up and
all the code, except for sfdisk, sees it as a fifth SATA drive. That
is why I claim that the drive is not recognized, at least not correctly.
One other point that I didn't mention before: The only way to get the
/dev/sde4 created is to boot the system WITH a disk inside the ZIP drive.
That was not necessary with Fedora Core 6 and the 2.6.18 kernel(s).
The command, mknod /dev/sde4 b 8 68, does not create a valid device.
In order to get /dev/sde4 correctly created, there must be a ZIP disk
inside the ZIP drive before the system is booted.
Below, you can read what sfdisk has to say about the device, correcting
the error(s) generated by the kernel (kudzu or whatever). But when
an attempt is made to write to the ZIP drive, or even just print out
the partition table, hundreds of error messages show up in the system log.
I've included only very few of the system log messages, below.
---------- Some of the console output (commands and responses) ----------
[root@estreet ~]# ls -alt /dev/sde*

Hi there,
i want use GraphicsMagick with TYPO3 on a fedora 7 installation. Reading
images failed, because of GraphicsMagick's SegFaults...
It's on all images except GIF. I've tried many different jpg's...
Any ideas?
Thx

32bit drivers, 64bit F7
by korgull
Hi,
I'm stuck with some 32bit only drivers. I have F7 64bit installed and they
can't be used (of course).
These drivers probably won't be available anytime soon I think in 64bit
version but it's being worked on so eventually they will be available I
think. Until that time I'd like to work with the 32bit drivers.
Besides installing a complete f7 32bit version are there any other options to
use these (closed source) drivers ?

Marcel

Kernel 2.6.22.1-33.fc7 and time problem
by Andre ten Bohmer
Hi,
After updating the kernel this morning, I ran in this odd situation:
- Clock in gnome does not update (stays the same) and is running 2 hours
ahead
- date in console show correct time (as does hwclock --debug), file
stamps are ok but log entries in /var/log/messages also are marked with
incorrect time and each entry has the same time
The 2 hours ahead could be explained because our local time is Amsterdam
and summer time, but the system clock is configured local time and not
UTC!
Falling back to kernel 2.6.22.1-27.fc7 shows normal operation.
Cheers,
André

FC 6 Install is stalled
by Stan Dereska
Sir,
After buying a SAM's book and CD from a Microcenter a few days ago, I
tried to follow the installation
procedure using a CD but my PC failed to recognize an OS (I've erased
the hard drive which had Win XP).
The book describes an install procedure using a CD from a program
called "kickstart" that causes my
machine to recognize the CD, I believe. How do I boot up to install
FC 6 ? Where can I download kickstart ?
I'm new to Unix and Linux . Thanx for your assistance.

Killed /home installing Fedora 7 with Ubuntu
by Dotan Cohen
While installing Fedora 7 on a Dell Inspiron laptop previously running
Ubuntu, I had corrupted and then erased /home (sda4) by accident.
After a failed Fedora install, Ubuntu would not boot. Not knowing what
to do, and with no way to boot and google the situation, I played Y,
Y, Y to all fsck's questions. Now, /home is empty. I do have a backup
from 4 weeks ago, as I backup the first of every month, but I have
done quite a bit of work this past month. I'm very interested in
recovering the data.
More info: This is a Dell Inspiron machine, 2.0GHz dual-core Intel
processor, 2GB RAM, 80GB 7000RPM hard drive, ATI X1400 video. The disk
is partitioned with sda1: 15GB /; sda2: 15 GB blank (Fedora was to go
here) ; sda3: 3GB swap ; sda4: ~47 GB /home. I set these partitions a
few months ago when I last installed Ubuntu. I had begun install of
Fedora 7 when the machine crashed- I didn't get to the real install
part. Upon rebooting (into Ubuntu), it complained something about
inodes. I gave it the root password (yes, I had previously set a root
password) and ran fsck (or something else resembling a rather
unacceptable work, appropriate name by the way). A few Y, Y, Y's later
I could boot the system. However, as soon as I logged into KDE I was
returned to the login screen. I CTRL-ALT-F4ed into a terminal and
logged in as root. I then cd'ed into /home, and ls showed that there
was nothing there. I immediately ran shutdown -h and now that I'm home
I'm writing from the wife's desktop.
Any help in recovering the /home/user directory, or even specific
files therein, would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
