Cannot login after yum update
by Stephen Pusey
I am not sure if this is the right forum - but would appreciate help. I did a yum update on November 1st using a development Fedora 8. After this I rebooted the machine (a leased server) and could not ssh as root. I could access the site via webmin and by "re-enabling" the users I could then start ssh and other services. I then rebooted and found that I could not login with either ssh or with webmin. I currently have the server mounted through a gentoo CD. However, I am stumped. I think the issue may be with pamd - but everything looks fine. I also suspect xinetd. Looking at the messages logs I see a EXT-fs check was forced on the disk on a reboot. I have also run e2fsck from the cdrom on the unmounted disk and it is clean.
Below I attach a list of what yum did. and also a tail of the secure log as well as messages log.
I would be grateful for your advice.

Updating Firefox
by Aly Dharshi
Hello Folks,
I hope that you are well. Using yum to update firefox to the latest in
F7. I see the following errors:

Has anyone seen this same problem where the above mentioned pkgs are
missing from the repos ? Or is it just me ? Thanks.
Cheers,
Aly.

update /etc/hosts after ifup-ppp

Is there an easy way to update /etc/hosts after my XDSL connection comes

rpm -VVa errors immediately after fc7 install
by Dave Burns
I am curious why rpm verification fails on these files/packages
immediately after installation of fc7. I am leaving out some things
(especially config files) that obviously get changed during/after
install.
Many files installed from tetex and tetex-dvips packages show changes.
SM5....T c /usr/lib/security/classpath.security
S.5....T c /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xmlcatalog
Does the install/setup process really change these files, or could the
rpms have the wrong md5s, modes, times, and file sizes?
classpath.security and xmlcatalog are listed as config files, but
would the config really change depending on how I install or how I
answer the post-install questions? I think I just took the defaults,
don't understand what would've changed.
/usr/lib/security/classpath.security is particularly boring...
----------------
grep -v '^#' /usr/lib/security/classpath.security
security.provider.1=gnu.java.security.provider.Gnu
security.provider.2=gnu.javax.crypto.jce.GnuCrypto
security.provider.3=gnu.javax.crypto.jce.GnuSasl
security.provider.4=gnu.javax.net.ssl.provider.Jessie
security.provider.5=gnu.javax.security.auth.callback.GnuCallbacks
auth.login.defaultCallbackHandler=gnu.javax.security.auth.callback.DefaultCallbackHandler
securerandom.source=file:///dev/urandom
---------------------
Would any of that really differ between different fc7 installs if
no-one went and mucked with them?
And then
....L... c /etc/pam.d/system-auth
L means 'readLink(2) path mismatch' whatever that means. I googled
that, but just got a lot of pages that quote the man page, no further
explanation.
ls -la shows that /etc/pam.d/system-auth is actually a soft link to
/etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac. I wonder why? Is there actually something
to be concerned about here? /etc/pam.d/system-auth is supposed to come
from pam, but /etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac comes from authconfig package.
??? Is authconfig stepping on pam?
Is there a README or FAQ somewhere that should be the place to look
for answers about this sort of thing?
thanks,
Dave

kdepim from Fedora Development repository
by Timothy Murphy
I just made what may be the mistake of installing kdepim
from the Fedora development repository.
[I did this because I had the gnokii package from this repository,
and was unable to update gnokii-devel from the standard repository
because this required an earlier version of gnokii.
I tried the two suggestions made when I asked about downgrading,
but neither of them seemed to work,
though it is quite likely I did not follow them correctly.]
In any case, the new kdepim
kdepim-3.5.7-10.svn20070926.ent.fc7.i386
seems to contain a strange kaddressbook.
Surprisingly, this is an older version, 3.5.6,
than the current standard version, 3.5.7,
and it seems much larger:
[tim@elizabeth ~]$ ls -ls /usr/bin/kaddressbook
804 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 819188 2007-10-08 15:00 /usr/bin/kaddressbook
[tim@alfred ~]$ ls -ls /usr/bin/kaddressbook
44 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 43892 2007-06-20 01:22 /usr/bin/kaddressbook
I filed a KDE bugzilla, but I'm not entirely sure it is not my mistake ...

How To Use The DN to log onto the LDAP server with PHPLDAPAD
by Jyotishmaan Ray
Dear All Members,
This is Jyotishmaan.
I have a small problem with phpldapadmin.
These are the lines of config.php file, which i have changed:-
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','name','My LDAP Server: authdns(a)nits.ac.in');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','host','127.0.0.1');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','base',array('dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in'));
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','auth_type','session');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'login','dn','');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'login','dn','cn=Manager,dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'login','pass','');
$ldapservers->SetValue($i,'login','pass','secret');
with
the above lines in config.php i am getting the following error message
displayed while logging onto the LDAP server with the phpldapadmin
browser:-
Could not bind to the LDAP server. LDAP said: Unknown errorError number: 0x1a ()Description:
Please note I have not used either TLS or SASL to connect or authenticate with the LDAP server. Is it important to do ??
However,
i have added two entries into the bdb database over the ldap from the
root prompt using ldap command. the transcript of it is as given below:-
[root@authdns
bin]# ldapadd -x -D "cn=Manager,dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in" -W -f
/etc/openldap/test/.ldif/etc/openldap/test/.ldif: No such file or
directory
[root@authdns bin]# ldapadd -x -D "cn=Manager,dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in" -W -f /etc/openldap/test/new.ldif
Enter LDAP Password:
adding new entry "dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in"
adding new entry "cn=Manager,dc=nits,dc=ac,dc=in"
But since i have the phpldapadmin browser,
i would like to add all the entries using the browser.
Please let me know the necessary changed that needs to be done in the config.php file.
One more question, here i have to run the slapd deemon manually in the directory, /usr/bin/slapd -d 65 &
I wish to run it directly using the command :-
service slapd restart
Now, should i include this service name directly in the file /etc/services file?
I would not like to take risk, so please help me???
Thanking you, for all the answers, in advance,
Jyotishmaan
With Thanks and Regards,
Jyotishmaan Ray

My rpm database says this

Why does yum want python-2.4 when 2.5 is installed.
If it is required where do I find it?
Thanks david
