FC4 -> FC6 dvd writer not detected
by Douglas Phillipson
After I upgraded to FC6 my DVD writer was no longer detected, I suspect
because I had to comment out a line in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
to get my machine to boot. What can I do to get the DVD detected and
the device made for it, after the machine is booted. Because I had to
comment out the following line in 50-udev.rules:
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="?*", ENV{MODALIAS}=="?*",
RUN+="/sbin/modprobe $env{MODALIAS}"
I had to put: "/sbin/modprobe snd-emu10k1" in /etc/rc.local for my
sound card driver to be loaded. I assume I need another modprobe
command for my DVD, I just don't know what it is...
Thanks

I think what you want is activestate.com and look for ActivePerl. There may
be other Windows ports, but ActivePerl is the one I've used. To update it,
use the PPM tool; CPAN will give you source code that you quite probably
won't be able to install without a compiler of some sort.

OT: query routers tables
by Jamie Bohr
This question is way off topic, sorry. I have googled and googled and have
not come up with a answer to my question.
I want to query a switch (via SNMP I think) to get a list of systems
attached to it. I am using Nagios and would like to determine switch/router
dependencies. Trace route will not work because it will not show
routers/switches for systems on the same sub-net as the system doing the
trace route and I have seen where it does not return the network based
switch a system is attached to, just the router. If I could get a list
systems attached to a router/switch (not a personnel switch, a managed
switch) I can correlate the information and build dependencies. I have a
hand-held Fluke network tester than runs Linux that will do this for me when
I type in a hostname, I would rather do it programmaticly because I have
over 300 systems I need to do. I am open to any method that works that I
can script so I don't have to do it every time a new system appears. Just
in case it matters some systems are attached to a V-lan off a managed switch
and I do NOT have admin rights to the routers or switches.

Fedora Core 6 not recognizing all of my memory
by SevenFortyOne
Greetings,
I just installed FC6 on a Dell 6800 with 32GB of ram. When I run the free
command it reports I only have about 15GB available. I had FC4 on this
machine and it saw all 32GB of Ram. I checked the BIOS and it seems to see
all 32GB as well.
Does anyone know if there is a known problem with FC6 seeing this much RAM?

No, you do not need the devel, only the main mjpegtools.
By the way, I filed a bug report to freshrpms about the missing
option -p S, in mjpegtolls 1.9.0
However, I do not use mjpegtools directly. I have always used mencoder or
transcode for that.
If you think version 1.9.1 still have problems, you can email me
directly, and I will try to fix it. It is a package used by many other
projects, and should work.

CUPS Tunning
by Danesh Daroui
Hi all,
I have a fedora 6 machine which acts as Print server. I have had
following problem since I had installed Fedora 3:
1. Each time I turn off each printer connected to the server and restart
the server, when I turn the printer on again, the system says that new
printer has been detected. How can I install each printer permanently?
2. I would like not you use SAMBA for printer sharing, so when I want to
use IPP for my both Windows XP and Ubuntu notebook to connect to the
server and detect printers it always fails. However the CUPS port 631 on
the server is already open!

shell script how to switch users?
by Rajiv Jaisankar
Hi All,
i am not sure if this is the right mailing list for asking this question. I
would appreciate any help on this.
I want to switch users using a shell script, i.e.
Say i am logged in as user1. I would like to say su - user2 in my script.
I would be performing some operations as user "user2" as part of the script
after logging in as this user.
Finally i will be exiting back to user1 shell.
How will i login as user2 through shell script?
How will i execute scripts as user2 after logging in from shell script?
Even if i am able to login as user2
any commands after "su - user2" are not executed as user2. They are executed
only as user1 when i exit the
user2 shell.

qwerty layout shortcuts
by Dotan Cohen
On KDE I've got three keyboard layouts installed- US English, Dvorak,
and Hebrew. I go nuts switching over to US English everytime that I
need to perform a keyboard shortcut. How can I have the keyboard
shortcuts work as if the keyboard is always qwerty? I'd like to
configure it at the X level rather than at the KDE level, but I'd
accept any solution that works. Thanks in advance.

Problems upgrading dbusfc6 version to fc7 development version.
by David Hunter
I´ve got the following files on my system (dbus versions)
dbus-1.0.1-8.fc6
dbus-x11-1.0.1-8.fc6
but the development packages are:
dbus-1.0.1-3.fc7.i386.rpm
dbus-x11-1.0.1-3.fc7.i386.rpm
both rpm and yum see that the version (not the fc bit) of the fc7 version is
less than the fc6 version. How can I upgrade to the fc7 version? Or do I
wait till the fc7 version excedes the fc6 version?

dhclient
by Simon Neumeister
hi everybody
since i changed from Mandriva 2007 to FC6, i have trouble with the
automatic network configuration through dhclient.
As i am moving daily from home to office and back with my laptop and use
on both locations dhcp for configuation, i ran into trouble as dhclient
requests an ip address for the network at home when i am in the office
and vice versa.
The dhcp-server of course reponds then with a 'wrong network' message.
When doing the entire stuff manually (ifdown eth0, ifup eth0) its the
same. The only solution i have right now is to unload the eth0 driver
(rmmod tg3) from the kernel and load it again (modprobe tg3), but thats
no permanent solution....
