Re: GRUB Boot Menu

Hi,

Two things that I think make SuSE's boot menu looks (this is the keyword,
here) cool:
- Position of the text (i.e., the position of the boot selection in the
middle of the screen)
- Visualization of the timeout (using an animated icon)
I find these 2 factors more visually appealing. Eye candy, for sure... but
oh, how sweet it is... :)

xgl on FC5 with ATI X700
by Gayal
i was installing xgl to my laptop. it has ATI X700 VGA.
i followed the following steps which is given in this site.
http://fedoraxgl.tuxfamily.org/index.php?title=Installation_en
Install Fedora Xgl Repository: # rpm -Uvh
http://fedoraxgl.tuxfamily.org/repository/fedora-xgl-repository-1.0-3.noa...
Import GPG Key # rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-AL-CAPCOM
Install Xgl and Compiz packages:# yum --enablerepo=fedora-xgl install compiz
xorg-x11-server-Xgl---------------------------------------------
Result of this Command: Package xorg-x11-server-Xgl-1.1.99.1-3.i386.rpm is
not signed Installation Failed :(
May try cd /var/cache/yum/fedora-xgl/packages rpm -ivh * (actually may need
to rpm -ivh one by one...)
Just to get you by change in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-xgl.repo gpgcheck=1 to
gpgcheck=0
Run the yum command above again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
so exactly the above happend. so i yumed each package seperatly with -ivh.
But while installing xorg-x11-server-Xgl-1.1.99.1-3.i386.rpm the following
occurred.
[root@localhost packages]# rpm -ivh xorg-x11-server-Xgl-1.1.99.1-3.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libglitz-glx.so.1 is needed by xorg-x11-server-Xgl-1.1.99.1-3.i386
libglitz.so.1 is needed by xorg-x11-server-Xgl-1.1.99.1-3.i386
when i google theres s no such package available. Instead wut i got
downloaded to my machine is
(by running this command # yum --enablerepo=fedora-xgl install compiz
xorg-x11-server-Xgl)
glitz-0.5.6-3.fc5.i386.rpm
glitz-glx-0.5.6-3.fc5.i386.rpm
libsvg-0.1.4-4.fc5.i386.rpm
libsvg-cairo-0.1.6-3.fc5.i386.rpm
------------------------
Any how i managed continue with the packages which got downloaded to my
machine.
now when i type
$ gnome-xgl-info
-----------------------------------------------------------
This is wut i should get...
This command must return, it's like that:
G ATI Technologies
1 kmod-nvidia is installed for the kernel release 1.2111_FC5
1 -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv
Explanation the return of gnome-xgl-info:
- *First line is:*
CardStatus [CardName]
where CardStatus is: G(ood), B(ad), S(low), or U(nknown)
- *Second line is:*
3DStatus [Missing or installed Packages]
where 3DStatus is 0 or 1
- *Third line is:*
XglStatus [RecommendedOptions]
where XglStatus is 0 or 1 and RecommendedOptions is set if the
hardware is detected as compatible.
----------------------------------------------------------------
But the results shows this
cat: /etc/sysconfig/xgl/status: No such file or directory
G ATI Technologies
0 kmod-fglrx is not installed for the kernel release 1.2054_FC5
0 -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer
Any idea how to proceed to the next stage from hear :(

new subject, pango
by Gene Heskett
Does anyone have a clue as to how new a pango I'd have to install to get
rid of this error?:
[root@coyote xaralx]# bin/xaralx
bin/xaralx: error while loading shared libraries: bin/xaralx: undefined
symbol: pango_context_get_font_map
FC2 system now. pango is pango-1.4.1-1 now.
Thanks.

Rebuilding postfix with mysql suport
by Przemyslaw Gawronski
Hi, what is the 'cleanest' way to rebuild a Postfix rpm (srpm) so it
will handle mysql on FC5?
Will it rebuild it self with the mysql suport when I run 'yum update'
and a new version of Postfix will be FC repos ?
Thanks

configuring a router behind a DSL modem and bittorrent
by Claude Jones
I doubt my problem is FC - I apologize in advance if that's the actual case,
but I'm hoping that amongst this vast user-base, there's someone who has
encountered the same problem and since bittorrent is more and more a vital
part to the acquiring of FC, maybe I'm not too off-topic. Anyhow....
My network consists of a Westell 6100 DSL modem configured as a PPPoE
connection, presumably by Verizon, my provider - it arrived in plug-and-play
configuration, and I did almost nothing to get it up except plug it in to a
Windows box and run Verizon's installation disk. Behind the DSL modem is a
Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Both are configured to get their address via
DHCP, and both are configured to act as DHCP servers; the DSL modem gets its
address from Verizon; on the inside it's configured as a 192.168.1.X subnet;
my Linksys gets an address in that range, and is in turned configured to pass
out addresses in the 192.168.2.X range. All this works well for everything
I've tried to do - now, I'm trying to get bittorrent up, and I'm having
problems. Presumably, the problem is that I can't configure port forwarding
for the Westell since the only device it's seeing is the Linksys, which gets
its address dynamically from the Westell. I remember reading here some time
ago that the Westell had to be put into bridge mode, and then the router
could be configured to get the address from Verizon, and forward ports - my
question is, first, is that right? If so, does anyone have any experience
configuring the Westell 6100 for bridge mode? Are there other ways to make
this work? I've been reading the manuals for the two devices all afternoon,
and I've gone to the bittorrent faq to get info, but the section dealing with
this problem is sparse...

Font Size in Open Office Docs on different platforms
by Andy Campbell
When I transfer my open office documents to other platforms the font
size ( rendered ) is changing, causing the formating to go wrong. A
10pt font under the Linux platform is shorter than that shown when
running Open Office on Windows/Solaris (Gnome). On Linux I'm getting 2
more lines per page in a text document :-)
I tried to standardise using Microsoft's Arial font, but still the same
problem. I've also tried exporting to PDF. It becomes particularly
confusing on conference calls when I refer to a page in a document that
doesn't match with any one else.
Strangely for presentations - the text on Linux seems to bigger and flow
off the bottom of the slide.
Any ideas what is causing this ? I 'm using FC5 with all the latest
updates.
Thanks

kernel panic
by Roopnarine, Peter
Hi,
Last week I submitted a request for help concerning a kernel panic during a
RAM upgrade. First, thanks to everyone who had suggestions. Second, I solved
the problem and thought that I would just give a short summary.
The machine is an 8-way 64-bit Tyan AMD Opteron machine, originally with 8
GB of RAM. My wish was to upgrade to 16 GB since the machine is used for some
very memory-intensive numerical simulations. So, my IT folks ordered 8
additional memory modules (since they would prefer that researchers such as
myself not place orders), but upon popping in 4 of the new modules, I
received a kernel panic on re-boot. Returning to the original memory
configuration did not solve the problem, and I was left with a dead machine.
The motherboard has 4 CPUs, each with a 4-slot memory bank. Then there is an
expansion board with an additional 4 CPUs and 4 additional memory banks. The
problem in the end was simple. The new modules are PC2700, while the
originals are PC3200 (thanks IT). Mixing them in a single bank did not work.
Also, the BIOS apparently made some modifications upon the first re-boot that
hosed its original configuration. To solve the problem, I've reset the BIOS
to operate all the modules at 166 MHz instead of 200 MHz. Then I installed 4
of the new modules in each of two CPU banks on the expansion board, and
increased the remaining two banks to 2 GB each with older PC3200 modules. Oh,
and set the BIOS to read the memory-type automatically (it is a Phoenix
BIOS). No kernel or other OS modifications were necessary. I determined early
on that the problem was hardware-based by attempting a boot with a Kubuntu
64-bit live CD, but got a similar kernel panic. The trick was to not mix the
module types for a single CPU.
The system now has 16GB RAM, and while the RAM is running a bit slower, we
are after increased memory, not really increased speed (it's pretty fast as
is). This is not an optimal solution or memory configuration, and I plan to
eventually replace the PC2700 modules with 3200s, and funds permit.
Oh, one last thing. One person pointed out that memtest86 does not work with
ECC RAM, but I was able to run it from the Kubuntu CD, though not from the
Fedora rescue disc. Any ideas?
Peter

VMware configure trouble on FC5
by Jack Gates
I am trying to configure VMware-workstation-5.5.1-19175.i386.rpm on
FC5 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp
I have installed the kernel-smp-devel kernel-2.6.17-1.2174_FC5.src.rpm
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl is looking for something
in /usr/src/linux/include
/linux/include none of this part of the above exists
I tell it to look here
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.17-1.2174_FC5-smp-i686/include
but it gives me this
The kernel defined by this directory of header files does not have the
same
address space size as your running kernel.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match
your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
What am I missing or what don't I have installed that it is looking
for so it can finish the configuration?
