CD writers incl. verification
by Andrew Wood
Hi,
Is there a CD writer for FC5 which actually verifies the disk image
created? The verification is important for backing-up data. The desktop
writer in gnome doesn't have this option. Or maybe I should just diff a
harddisk image and the CD one?
Thanks,
Andrew, Oxford

Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy 470 FC5 X Windows failure
by Aaron Gray
X Windows on Fedora Core 5 fails on _one_ of our Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy 470's but not on our other one.
Redhat 9 and FC4 work fine.
Will post more info when availiable.
Where should I report this to.
Many thanks in advance,

Mylex/LSILogic DAC960 Broken on FC5
by Aaron Gray
Support for the Mylex or LSILogic DAC960PG is broken on Fedora Core 5.
It works fine on Redhat 9 and FC4 but Anaconda just hangs on loading the DAC960 driver.
I am wondering what I can do to get find if this is a known issue and as to whether it will be fixed in FC6 ?
Should I write to the development list and/or post it on bugzilla.
Many thanks in advance,
Aaron

md RAID and LVM recovery techniques.
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I know how to recover a single md drive but I am not sure how this works
under LVM.
My situation is two drives for md0 (~130gig) and two for md1. This on
FC4 so shouldn't make that much difference.
Joined together under LVM. One of the md0 drives failed on the weekend
and I want to ensure that I do this correctly.
As the drive comes up with no file-system error, I want to pull the
drive out and test it in an external carrier and possibly map out bad
blocks.
The other option is to replace the drive with a much larger drive (price
is lower) and partition the as a replacement.
Can I just rebuild the drive under md tools and it will work in the LVM
or do I have to re-label the drive?
If I pull the drive and put it in a carrier, will I be able to pull data
off of the drive?
Basically, can I just ignore the LVM on this drive?

Fwd: How to prevent uploads of broken packages
by Axel Liljencrantz
Hi,
The evolution and gnome-panel packages for Fedora have had broken
dependencies causing them to be impossible to update for almost 3
months. This forces me to manually ignore them on every yum upgrade.
This is not the first time this has happened, but as far as I can
remember it is the first time this has been the case for such a common
package for such a long period of time. This is certainly no
catastrophe, and anyone using a community distribution will have to
live with a bit of manual intervention every once in a while. I accept
that and don't want to blame anybody. But this situation has gotten me
thinking about how the Fedora development process could be improved to
handle this sort of thing better without forcing more work on the
packagers.
The obvious answer would be to never allow a package to enter the
Fedora repository if it is impossible to install it due to missing
dependencies. Such a system would have to be able to consider multiple
packages in a single transaction, since it must be possible to upload
packages that interdepend on each other.
Would such a feature addition be considered?
BTW, I would be happy to help out writing such a script, but I would
need some pretty heavy amount of mentoring on the internals of the
Fedora build process in order to do so. In the end it would probably
take as much time to implement this function as explain enough about
the build system for me to be able to write the script.

Sendmail bug to flaw: should I file another bug report?
by Gilbert Sebenste
Hello all,
Quick redhat.bugzilla.com question...
Someone filed a bug which tells of Sendmail 8.13.8 being released, which fixed
a bug in 8.13.7. Well, now that the bug is now a security issue and a few
machines are reported to be DOS'd, the original bug filer updated it to
"urgent" and I appended/added references to the FrSIRT and other advisory
links. But, now that this is a security issue, should I refile the bug as an
urgent, high priority security problem?
I haven't heard a peep from RedHat on this yet, so is it possible that they
don't see the security side of it? I am assuming they do and I am also
assuming I don't need to re-file, but I want to make sure for future
reference.
Thanks for any suggestions on protocol!

OpenGL problems
by Ali Helmy
Hey lads,
I need to ask some help of you... here's my dilemma:
I wanted to install the TuxRacer <http://tuxracer.sourceforge.net/> game, so
i downloaded the .tar.gz file, and unpacked... on running ./configure
though, i got the following message:
configure: error: Your copy of glx.h is out of date. You can get a more
recent copy from the latest Mesa distribution (http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net
).
So, I strolled over to mesa3d and downloaded their latest installed library
pack... then when trying to install it by make install, i got:
mkdir ${INCLUDE_DIR}
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/include': File exists
mkdir ${INCLUDE_DIR}/GL
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/include/GL': File exists
mkdir ${INCLUDE_DIR}/GLES
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/include/GLES': File exists
mkdir ${LIB_DIR}
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/lib': File exists
cp -f ${TOP}/include/GL/*.h ${INCLUDE_DIR}/GL
cp -f ${TOP}/src/glw/*.h ${INCLUDE_DIR}/GL
# NOT YET: cp -f ${TOP}/include/GLES/*.h ${INCLUDE_DIR}/GLES
cp ${CP_FLAGS} ${TOP}/lib*/lib* ${LIB_DIR}
echo "Done."
Done.
Now, when i try and install tuxracer, i get the same message of the
out-dated glx header... so, i don't really know what to do...
Ideas?

requesting help creating ext2 file
by dcooke@efn.org
Have existing HDD with old Fedora operating system
that I made USB external for data backups.
If I have it on at boot time with the new FC5 machine,
it can't handle and hangs the process. I can't see it
after boot.
Can I make an entry to /etc/fstab, like hdb or hdb2, to get the drive in
rw mode? Probably format then partition the beast before installing a
filing system, whatever type you think is best suited?
Thanks,
David
