password protect samba share on every access?
by Deepak
Hi,
I have FC5 running fine with samba and some stuff shared from it to
rest of the network. My shares are password protected. I can access
these shares from XP machines. For the first access, it asks username
and passowrd (which is fine) and permission is granted. Now next
subsequent access to samba shares are granted without any
authentication (which is not fine) until the client reboots (XP
machine).
I don't know which one is responsible for remembering the password (XP
or samba) but what I need is username and password should be provided
everytime the resource being accessed.
is there a way to do this?
Thanks

[Philosophy] Rebuilding rpm packages with different configuration options
by John Wendel
The current thread "download srpms and rebuild package with other
options" has raised a few questions in my small brain that I hope will
stimulate an interesting discussion.
[1] If I rebuild and install a package, what keeps a later update from
destroying my version?
[2] If the answer to [1] is "nothing", then why bother with a package
management system for this update?
[3] Why shouldn't I be able to update the RPM database manually
(without actually installing or updating software)?
I'd like to tell it that I have installed program "foobar version
99.9", so when the package maintainers release version 99.8 it won't
try to update.
[4] I recently tried to yum remove "cups\*", I couldn't do it because
of the package dependencies. It seems that everything that can print
has a cups dependency. But really, things continue to work fine
without cups, so the dependency isn't real. It seems that the package
dependency thing is just broken. Comments ???
Maybe I should just learn how to use rpm ...
Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'd appreciate your comments.
Thanks,
John

Re: software raid drive failed, please provide step by step, to rebuild

Things can get weird if swap is on a failed device or the device its on
fails while the system is running. I went the opposite route:
[root@fraud ~]# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/md5 2877756 184776 2546796 7% /
/dev/md3 248783 12014 223925 6% /boot
none 387852 0 387852 0% /dev/shm
/dev/md2 37057024 2122108 33052508 7% /home
/dev/md0 10317752 3161284 6632356 33% /usr
/dev/md1 10317752 1177868 8615772 13% /var
/dev/hdh1 9621848 24 9133048 1% /stage
/dev/hdh2 147945308 60761372 79668732 44% /share
/dev/md4 is swap. /stage is my amanda staging area and /share is for
large, replaceable files (e.g., movies, ISO images, etc.) They are
mounted by rc.local so even if that drive fails, the system comes up.
I tested by shutting the box down, pulling a ribbon cable off of a drive
and then booting the system. Lather, rinse, repeat. Any one drive can
die and the system still runs. The system has also survived a drive
failure. Got my e-mail from mdadm and just had to figure out which
drive in the RAID-1 pair had died.
Cheers,
Dave

Lost features.h file
by Brad Bonkoski
Hello,
Anyone else have any issues with this? I am running Fedora Core 5, with
most up to date updates.
When I try to build some software, I get this error, hopefully not the
tip of the iceberg, but would be interested if anyone knows the cause of
this...
/usr/include/stdio.h:28:23: error: features.h: No such file or directory
TIA.

How do I get postgresql to accept network TCP/IP connections in FC5?
There's no postmaster.conf file and no option for that in the
postgresql.conf.

unexpected IRQ trap at vector
by Lonni J Friedman
I just performed a fresh FC5-x86 installation on a Toshiba Tecra M3
notebook. All was good until I updated to the latest kernel. Now i'm
seeing this error in dmesg about 10 times/second, non-stop:
unexpected IRQ trap at vector 12
Anyone have any ideas on what is going on here? I tried booting with
both noapic and acpi=off, and neither made any difference.

And the result is that mp3 won't be played. Is there a solution?

WOT: Scripting Question[Scanned]
by Chris Bradford
Hi guys,
This is way off topic (hence WOT), but I am really stuck with this
*windows* issue.
Unfortunately in my environment I still have a few windows (yes i know!)
servers, and on one of them I am trying to make a script that will
interpret a text file called 'disc.txt' that looks like this:
jo tynan 15 Disc
wdica
KIML 1 Disc
wdica
sararyan 6 Disc
rdpwd
*There ARE spaces at the beginning of each line for some reason.*
The file is generated every hour by the command:
qwinsta /SERVER:servername | find "Disc" > disc.txt
Is there a way that I can pick out just the number, which is a session
number, on each line and remove the text? Maybe remove all other
characters? Or just pick out them number on each line for use in a later
command.
Then, I would like a command to be run for every number in the text
file, I assume something like this would work:
for "i" in textfilename run a_script_name
The command that needs to be run for each session number is:
rwinsta /SERVER:servername number_from_above_file
I hoping one of you guys can help me! Any pointers would be greatly
appreciated!
I know it's off topic, but bear with me, I've all ready replaced a load
of our machines with FC5 so I've earnt some brownie points! Even if you
can point me in the right direction.
Thanks for reading,
-Chris

Burning backup to dvd
by Anne Wilson
I use amanda to create backups that are split to fit on a dvd, but so far I
have not been able to create the dvd. It may be a permissions problem, or it
may be a k3b problem. I have tried to make the backup by running k3b as
amanda, and also by running k3b as root.
Running as amanda -
[amanda@borg ~]$ k3b
