Lexmark Z33 Printer
by Ashley M. Kirchner
Has anyone had any luck with the driver for this printer? If I try
to install it through the Control Center, I don't get very far because
this model isn't listed. The list only goes up to Z32... So I went to
Lexmark's website and they have a download for it though they say it's
for Linux Mandrake 7.0 (even though the previous link states RedHat.)
I downloaded that, and ran the file. It unpacks the rpm together
with some install scripts then runs the installer, which installs the
printer at /dev/usb/lp0 (that's where the printer is located on the usb
bus...) However, towards the end of the installer, this error pops up:
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.39413: line 16: [: too many arguments while
executing "close $io"
I can choose to continue or cancel the installation. Cancelling
will simply quit. Continuing seems to go just fine and I get the
cartridge alignment program. However, when I get to print anything (the
cartridge alignment, or the test page), another message pops up:
Error: lpr: The printer or class was not found.
When I look in the stack trace, I see this:
lpr: The printer or class was not found.
while executing
"exec lpr -P$printqueue $installpath/$testpagefile"
invoked from within
".top21.can24.can27.but37 invoke"

invoked from within
"uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]"
(procedure "tkButtonUp" line 7)
invoked from within
"tkButtonUp .top21.can24.can27.but37
"
(command bound to event)
Now what? When I look in /proc/bus/usb/devices, the relevant part says:
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=02 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1

So, I'm stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this
printer working?

Bogofilter 1.0.2 and Kmail filters
by Nigel Henry
I have Bogofilter 1.0.2 installed on FC2, and it's working ok separating the
Spam from the Ham, but I'm not sure if I have the filters set up correctly in
Kmail.
For example. There are no X-Bogosity header additions for the Spam in the spam
box, but all of the new mail in the inbox has X-Bogosity header additions.
Also, bogofilter 1.0.2 works in tri-state mode, and is able to detect Spam,
Ham, and Unsure, but as of now I have not been able to set up a filter to
send "Unsure" mail to the unsure box. While I was initially messing with
filters, one attempt sent all the mail to the inbox, and X-Bogosity headers
were added to all the mail, identifying the Spam as Spam, the Ham as Ham, and
there were a couple of obvious Spam mails identified as Unsure, so
Bogofilters "Unsure" appears to be working ok.
The filters setup is below.
Filter 1. bogofilter
Filter criteria:
Match all of the following
<any header> matches regular expr .*
Filter Actions:
remove header X-Bogosity
remove header X-Attachments
pipe through /usr/local/bin/bogofilter -pev
Advanced options:
If this filter matches, stop processing here. (unchecked)
This filter appears to be working ok.
Filter 2. bogofilter_is_spam
Filter criteria:
Match all of the following
X-Bogosity contains Spam
X-Bogosity doesn't contain Ham
Filter Actions:
remove header X-Bogosity
remove header X-Attachments
file into folder Spam
Advanced options:
If this filter matches, stop processing here (unchecked)
This filter separates the Spam from the Ham ok, but as I've said, X-Bogosity
header additions remain in the Ham that turns up in the inbox.
If I try to add an Unsure line to this filter.
X-Bogosity contains Unsure
along with,
file into folder unsure
then, pressing apply just results in the Unsure line being greyed out.
Any help with setting up the filter for Unsure, and verifying that the present
setup is ok is greatly appreciated.

configure fails on gcc?
by Morgan Read
Hi Folks
Not quite sure where to send this - just got a blank stare from opensync
mail list :| Though, others seem to have similar problems. So, may be
someone here can help?
Running fc5.
Trying to compile <http://svn.opensync.org/plugins/synce> from svn
source I get a failure on './autogen.sh': see bottom for output and log.
I googled on the error message and found this
<http://pomocnik.com/users/dan/2005/10/checking-for-c-compiler-default-out...>.
It suggests installing glibc-devel or perhaps libc6-dev, but
glibc-devel is installed and any packages offering something with libc6
are also installed.
Any ideas on what I kneed to install to satisfy the error?
Am I likely to find a simple fix (like something obvious I'm missing)
that'll make this work - or is it likely to be very broken?
Regards,
Morgan.

hibernate unstable with latest kernels ?
by Chris Jones
Hi,
Has anyone else been having problems with the latest (2.6.17) kernels and
hibernation. I am running 2.6.17-1.2157_FC5 and have found that when I resume
after hibernation the ssytem just hangs after starting to load the kernel
(after the "resuming from /dev/..." message).
Has anyone else experienced problems. with the 2.6.16 kernels hibernation was
generally very stable.
on another note, how can I make the kernel booting more verbose, to see whats
actually happening to the kernel.
cheers Chris

Minimal install for "git" on FC5 ?
by Andrew D. Stadler
On another list where I've been working out some ATI driver issues,
it's been suggested that I use the "git bisect" tool to try and
narrow down where the problem crept into the driver. So now I need
to install "git" on my FC5 system.
I ran "Add/Remove Software" and selected Development -> Development
Tools -> Optional Packages and found "git". This selected
git-1.4.0-1.fc5.
The dependencies, however, seem a bit heavyweight. apr? cvs tools?
subversion? perl? postrgresql?
Does the baseline git really need all of this? I just want to run
'git clone' and 'git bisect'. I don't use cvs or subversion, for
example.
I'm just wondering if there's a lighter weight way to install a
minimal git on my system.

Can not change screen resolution (Fedora 5, gnome)
by Haluk Tunali
Hi all,
It seems like I am not able to change my x server screen resolution from
the default to anything higher than that (I want 1280x1024 with (16 or
24 bit color depth). I have just freshly installed fedora 5 and running
gnome window manager. I have tried changing the resolution with
System->Administration->Display (the resolution and color depth options
that I want, are listed in the drop-down box), it prompts me to
logoff-logon, I exit the x server and start x again and see the same
resolution (same with restart). I also tried editing xorg.conf file
myself with no luck.
My xorg.conf file content is below. Fedora seems to recognize my monitor
and graphics card correctly (at least their names are correct in
xorg.conf).
I will greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks,

Moving ssh to a different port seems to be the easiest way, but
eventually
the scripts find the new port and start whacking it instead -- iptables
blocking is IMNSHO, a "better way" -- in that they can be logged --
useful
when you call in the feds. (Of course honeypots are even better....)
This is what I have done to block over 2400 ip blocks with no
performance
hit measurable. Of course, I whitelist some very common blocks first,
so
they avoid any delays, and most everyone else SHOULD be blocked so a
delay I
care not about. Snippets only...
-A INPUT -i eth1 -d MY.EXTERNAL.IP -j ext_in
-A ext_in -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j sshblock
-A sshblock -s G.0.0.D/I.P.BLCK.1 -j ACCEPT

-A sshblock -j ACCEPT
sshblock0 gets addresses in 0.0.0.0 through 63.255.255.255
sshblock64 gets addresses in 64.0.0.0 through 127.255.255.255
sshblock128 gets addresses in 128.0.0.0 through 191.255.255.255
sshblock192 gets addresses in 192.0.0.0 through 223.255.255.255
224.0.0.0 through 255.255.255.255 goes to sshdrop (which logs as
"DROPPED_SSH_PACKET " and drops)
To help performance even further, the SYN flag can be added to the check
for
port 22 above, provided a "RELATED,ESTABLISHED" line exists in the same
chain.
I forgot the URL, but there is a site that has a database of IP block
assignments. I periodically go to that site and download the blocks for
countries I NEVER want to receive email or ssh connections from, like
CN,
KR, MY, VN, FR, TW, BR, etc, and add them to the sshblock and smtpblock
lists.
