compiling software for diff. Releases/Linuxs
by Götz Reinicke
Hi,
for now all software I neede was availabel as rpm for my systems using
the features I wanted. But now I have to install some packages with
modified compile options and some packages aren't availabel as rpms for
my OS release.
I don't want to install all compiler-stuff on all systems so I'd like to
have one development station.
My question now: Can I compile the software (and build an rpm) on this
system and copy this installer to the others? Of cours I have to look
for dependencies like libraries etc.
E.g. the development station is FC5 and the other Systems are RHEL3&4
and FC 2&3.
Or do I have to compile the software on the same OS releas I'd like to
install it later?
Thank you for any explanations!
Best regards
Götz Reinicke

turn off "browsed queues" in system-config-printer?
by Paul Johnson
When i run system-config-printer, it sees a lot of networked devices,
and I don't have permission to use any of them. I've fiddled with the
configuration file and turned the BrowsedQueues option off, but still
they show up.
The presence of those browsed queues confuses some applications and
they refuse to use the default printer when they see something else
that looks good to them.

Screen Savers?
by Troy Bull
Greetings:
I have just upgraded to Fedora Core 5 and I notice I hardly have any
screen savers. There used to be many screen savers and I just set it to
random, it was quite nice. Does anyone know off the top of your head
how I can get them all back?
Thanks

FC3->FC5 problems - no audio, fonts bad, vmplayer install
by B Wooster
Took a while to get my FC3 box updated to FC5, using a bootable DVD.
Now am up, and running, still have been unable to resolve quite a few
issues, if anyone has pointers, let me know:
1) no audio.
Using KDE kcontrol, the sound panel says audio is enabled, but when I
click on Test, there is no sound.
2) I have installed the fonts using a RPM msttcorefonts-1.3-4.noarch.rpm.
But xterm, firefox windows look much worse than they did on FC3. I
guess I'll need to fiddle around with specific font settings (I
rebooted after installing the fonts).
3) Cannot configure vmware-player. Running vmware-config.pl first
complains that gcc 4.1.1 is installed while kernel was compiled with
4.1.0.
I forced a yes, continue on that point, and then it got stuck on the
include path - I gave it
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.16-1.2122_FC5-i686/include/
but it complained:
The kernel defined by this directory of header files does not have the same
address space size as your running kernel.
No idea what to try next...
4) Assuming that vmware-player needs complete sources and not just
kernel-devel, I tried:
yumdownloader --source kernel, which fails with:
No Match for argument kernel
I'm running 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5 - is the src not available for that?
And then there were the problems I had to manually fix - kdmrc was
pointing to the wrong X - in X11R6 instead of just /usr/bin.
Other minor issues:
5) on boot, I get a "can't delete /var/run/cups/certs, is a directory"
message - any way to stop that line from appearing?
6) I've not yet figured out how the make X11 startup using the
1280x1024 mode - I thought all I had to do was to make it appear first
in the list, here's what I have:
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768"
"800x600" "640x480" "1600x1200"
But it ends up in a much larger display size.

/usr/bin/lpr not found
by Samuel Díaz García
I have a problem in a computer with FC5.
I have configured a samba printer and I'm trying to print the test and a
dialog box appears with the error described.
I had intalled cups package and cups service is running.
Any body knows what I'm missing? I can view /usr/bin/lpr command without
troubles, it is there.
Thanks

Does a graphical dyndns client exist for FC5.
A graphical frontend for a cli client is also good.
