Problem Installing FC 6

Subject: Problem Installing FC 6
A friend of mine is having a challenge installing core 6.
>The disks pass the media check on both the target computer and another
computer.
>Disk 1 installs properly yet when he loads disk 2 it informs him that
he has loaded the wrong disk.
He and I both downloaded from the same site about the same time and my
disks have worked so it is not the site and he is certain in both cases
If he used, K3B he may not have noticed that when using the 'Tools >
Burn CD Image' selection, you have to specifically select the iso you
wish to burn *even if you have already selected it in the drag-n-drop on
the main screen. When you select the CD Image tool, it immediately
starts to run a MD5 sun check on the image and it is VERY easy to fail
to notice that it is checking your last selected image: that is, DISK 1,
Been there, done that...

FC 5 can't fine CDROM during installation - Core 2 DUO motherboard
by Barry Yu
During installation, the install CD booted up in CD ROM, Installation Method was Local CDROM, up to this point, got message; Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type. Would you like to manually select your device or a driver disk?
The system is with Core 2 DUO E6400 cpu, this happened to both Intel DG965WH and ASUS P5B Deluxe. Both mother board were with Intel RAID controller.
I tried using the win98 floppy to boot up with CD ROM support option, saw message;
No drive found - aborting installation,
No valid CDROM device drivers selected.
No way to install the FC5 with above 2 motherboards, what was the problem?

Re: what partitioning rule am I not aware of?
by McBroom, Robert C
Curious. I've usually set up drives with three primaries and an
extended partition. With the first partition fat32, I can put windows
anywhere on the disk I want it.

A more correct explanation as to why I didn't know the command is I
usually don't bother with partition labels. If I add a drive to a
system, I've usually found it easier to just change fstab to use the
actual device for any affected partitions. There's probably a good
reason to use labels instead of devices but I'm not aware of what that
reason is. Not sure why the OP is having problems and using the device
in fstab doesn't seem to be working for him. It works from the command
line which makes no sense.
My first exposure to man pages was on HP-UX (late 1980s) so I prefer
"man -k" to apropos. Besides, fewer letters to type. :D
Cheers,
Dave

FC6 (and FC5 updated) Evolution to Exim STARTTLS not supported
by Dr J Austin
Hi
I have recently installed FC6 and now receive the following message when
sending an email from FC6 evolution to exim running on a FC5 box (maui).
"Error while performing operation."
"Failed to connect to SMTP server 148.197.29.5 in secure mode:
STARTTLS not supported"
################################
I have had no trouble when using FC5 with
rpm -qa|grep -i evolution
evolution-data-server-1.5.92-1.i386
evolution-2.6.0-1.i386
evolution-sharp-0.10.2-9.i386
evolution-webcal-2.4.1-3.2.i386
##########################################
I have updated exim and openssl on the FC5 exim server(maui)
and the same error is still received
rpm -qa|grep -i exim
exim-doc-4.62-2.fc5
exim-4.62-2.fc5

exim-mon-4.62-2.fc5
rpm -qa|grep -i openssl
openssl-devel-0.9.8a-5.4
openssl-0.9.8a-5.4
##########################################
I then tried updating evolution on a 2nd FC5 box (calma)and the error
reappears !!!!!!!!

Single entry mirrorlists in FC6?
by Ingemar Nilsson
Hi,
I installed FC6 last friday, and I noticed a problem with Yum. Almost every
time I tried to use yum to either install new packages or update existing
packages, it complains that ftp://falkor.skane.se/... is busy, trying next
mirror, and exits.
I looked at the mirrorlist entry in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo,
and downloaded the mirrorlist in my web browser. The mirror list only
contained *one* mirror (I'm in Sweden). In FC5 and previous versions, the
mirror list used was
http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/updates-released-fc$releasever
which contains a lot of mirrors.
Is it really good that I only get Swedish mirrors, as there is only one? Of
course, I could point it to the US mirrorlist manually, but that would be a
hack that does not solve the real problem.
I'm considering filing a bugzilla entry for this issue. Any comments?
Regards
Ingemar

Installation of FC6 fails with a kernel panic, probably due to AGP
by Paso
Hello there.
As in the subject: I try to install FC6, but the installation fails with
a kernel panic:
EIP: [<c04140c7>] clear_local_APIC+0x11/0xaf SS:ESP 0068:dfa13588
<0>kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
<1>BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ffffd370
[several (to me incomprehensible) text lines]
Call Trace:
[<c041416a>] disable_local_APIC+0x5/0x29
After some "heuristic" attempts if have found out that if I disable the
AGP card and use the onboard video card the installation goes on without
any problem (or at least doesn't stop with the kernel panic... I don't
perform a complete installation so far... ;-)). Of course this is not a
feasible solution...
The same problem appears also with previuos releases of Fefora core (in
fact since FC2, I can install without problems FC1) and with different
AGP video cards (e.g. ATI Radeon 9200).
I try to boot the installation with "noprobe", "noapic", "headless" and
many other options, but nothing changes.
My hardware:
Motherboard: AsRocks p4i56GV with
ASRock A.G.I. 8X - VGA upgrade slot, (AGP8X/4X compatible)
Actual Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT (but the problem appears also
with different cards)
Any suggestion?
Thank you all,
Stefano

FC6 won't mount Windows drive /dev/hda1
by fergus
FC6 mainly rocks (or even ROCKS! as somebody else has stated) but my
experience with new versions, confirmed again with FC5 -> FC6, is that they
are always a case of "two steps forward, one step back".
Two steps forward: at last my (frankly not very eccentric) audio card is
recognised and can be used (never the case in FC3-5); and I get video in an
amazing 1280x1024 resolution, just like in Windows, whereas with FC3-5 it's
always been less well presented than this.
One step back: I did a limited clean install because an attempted upgrade
FC5 -> 6 failed (new version started with a "grub" prompt presented to
screen) and an attempted full install (right-click then say Yes to
everything) failed at BIND DNS Server ("file conflict" . ?). I've tried more
than one such limited installation, all concluded successfully, but at every
success the story is the same: FC6 will not mount the Windows filesystem on
the C: drive (FAT32 at /dev/hda1). It must in a sense "know" it's there (a)
because the grub boot sector is located at /MBR and (b) any typed explicit
instruction to "mount -t vfat -o posix,shortname=winnt /dev/hda1 /c" is
always successful. But the equivalent instruction in /etc/fstab is either
ignored or not understood, I don't know which. The hard drive is an
unexceptional 120G IDE drive FAT32 LBA (forgotten, comes up as type c I
think with fdisk -l, once it's been mounted by hand).
Has anybody experienced this problem and can tell me how to crack it: ie.
what instruction should I write in /etc/fstab that is different from
/dev/hda1 /c vfat user,noauto,exec,rw,posix,shortname=winnt 0 0
and which will be implemented? By the way mkdir /c has already been done,
that's not the cause. (By the way, strangely, FC6 picks up two USB drives
and a USB stick AND a digital camera without any difficulty at all.
Thank you.

smbmount
by Amadeus W.M.
And now that smbmount is gone (why?) how do I mount a partition with rw
permissions for the world? Or at least for myself. I can only mount it (as
root), with read only permissions.
