2 versions of librsvg2 after updates on fresh install of FC5
by Nigel Henry
Just installed yet another FC5 on the other machine. 873MB of updates on
dialup, but thankfully I'd saved the /var/cache/apt/archives from the other
FC5 installs, so only had to suffer 496MB of downloads. Apart from some sort
of transaction error when the updates finished, which I was unable to save as
I got a power out. We'll forget about the error. It was something to do with
pixbuf loader.
Anyway FC5 booted up ok when the power came back, and I ran apt-get update
again just to check out whether everything was ok. I've got a big bunch of
deletes from apt-get update, and the last entry is.
W: There are multiple versions of "librsvg2" in your system.
True. Looking in synaptic I have libsrvg2#2.14.2-1, and
libsrvg2#2.14.4-1.fc5.1 .
/usr/lib shows librsvg-2.so.2 pointing to librsvg-2.so.2.14.4
Is it safe to just remove the earlier librsvg2#2.14.2-1 version from the
system?
There were no 3rd party repo's active when I did the updating, and both
packages are listed as from (download.fedora.redhat.com)

Scanner not found
by Alain PORTAL
Hi,
I haven't used my scanner since I was under FC-4 where it worked fine.
Today, under an uptodate FC-5, my scanner isn't detected.
This is an Espon Perfection 1650.
sane-find-scanner return nothing.
scanimage -L return "No scanners were identified."
Any idea of the problem?
Of course, scanner is power on and connected ;-)

Alain

resetting GNOME
by fedora-list@amlai.com
Sorry if this comes through multiple times, but I think something something
is filtering my messages out.
Is there a way to completely reset GNOME? Right now, GNOME is completely
unusable for me. Something happened when I ran yum update last night.
(e.g., clicking on a link in thunderbird results in "ERROR: The browser
does not exist. Please reconfigure." and then right after, The Application
"control-center" has quit unexpectedly.) Trying to set the theme in GNOME
results in "The default theme schemas could not be found on your system.
This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your
gconf is configured incorrectly."
I tried creating a new user and what comes up for that user is the Computer
icon and Trash icon with a completely black background. There is a small
panel, about 200 pixels across at the top without any icons in it. I assume
this is not normal. So, is there a way to reload everything from scratch? I
tried running this as well:
for i in /etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas ; do
GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=xml:merged:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule $i > /dev/null; done
but that results in numerous errors e.g.:
WARNING: failed to install schema
`/schemas/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/motion_acceleration' locale
`gl': Unable to store a value at key
'/schemas/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/motion_acceleration', as the
configuration server has no writable databases. There are some common
causes of this problem: 1) your configuration path file
/etc/gconf/2/path doesn't contain any databases or wasn't found 2)
somehow we mistakenly created two gconfd processes 3) your operating
system is misconfigured so NFS file locking doesn't work in your home
directory or 4) your NFS client machine crashed and didn't properly
notify the server on reboot that file locks should be dropped. If you
have two gconfd processes (or had two at the tim e the second was
launched), logging out, killing all copies of gconfd, and logging back
in may help. If you have stale locks, remove ~/.gconf*/*lo ck. Perhaps
the problem is that you attempted to use GConf from two machines at
once, and ORBit still has its default configuration that prevents
remote CORBA connections - put "ORBIIOPIPv4=1" in /etc/orbitrc. As
always, check the user.* syslog for details on problems gconfd
encountered. The re can only be one gconfd per home directory, and it
must own a lockfile in ~/.gconfd and also lockfiles in individual
storage locations such as ~ /.gconf
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

by Mark Ryden
Hello,
I have FC5 which runs on x86_64.
I tried to download the OpenOffice tar and instrall it (by

On the other hand, trying to install these 32 libraries gave an error.
Also trying to yum install openoffice.org-base

DVD problem in FC5
by William Murray
Hello there,
I have a problem with FC5, must have started within the last
month, but I don't know which update.
My dvd drive (TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TSL462C; device /dev/scd0) no longer
automounts CD/DVDs when inserted. Now I can get root and mount manually,
but it is annoying.
Actually I have two options:
-> No boot-time kernel option
This gives correct auto-mounting, but no DMA--> DVDs unwatchable
-> hdc=noprobe
This gives no auto-mount, but I can watch DVDs
I used to get both at once.
Any clues anyone?
Thanks,
Bill
[Ps 2.6.28 kernel seems just the same]

Suggestions for e-mail client:
by R. G. Newbury
I have been using thunderbird but unfortunately it saves all the
messages in one large globular file. I cannot merge e-mails which have
been retrieved/sent from different computers into one source.
I like the way thunderbird works, otherwise.
I need an e-mail client which keeps messages as single items (files) and
which can rebuild its indexes of the messages in each folder without
painful interventions, so that I can merely rsync the appropriate folder
structure into one place for a full backup of all computers.
(I have had these features for years using pmmail in OS/2 but I have
made the switch and will not go back..but I do miss some things.)
Suggestions please.
