SATA, Raid 1, LVM and controller question.
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I have a question about peoples experience with SATA and RAID 1.
I have 4 SATA drives, 2 which are presently md0 in an initial LVM. I
am about to add the second two drives as md1 to the LVM. One
controller is onboard and the other is a PCI card.
Now with the present setup, I have the md0 drives on the same SATA
controller chip and I notice that when large files are written to the
array, there is a pause in the operation of the workstation. Anything
being done is affected.
I was wondering if moving the drives to different controllers would
benefit in throughput as putting IDE drives on different controllers?
I am thinking of doing it but I have not seen any information on
physically moving md drives from lets say sda to sdc.
As the LVM is looking at md0 and not the sd* devices, I don't think I
will have to do anything with LVM during this.
I will backup the data just to be safe.

setting up 2 dvd's
by George Hare
Hi All,
I have googled and read as much as I can find but nothing I found
tells me how to activate 2 dvd's. The one that came with the box can't
write dvd and so I bought a dual layer BENQ and had it installed at
the store. When I place a dvd in it, the green light flashes and when
I point Xine to dvd1 I get no MRL. Both appear in /dev with symlinks
as cdrom, cdrom1, cdwriter, cdwriter1, dvd, dvd1, and dvdwriter. When
I try to play a music cd, I get permission denied. I have no trouble
with the original, but can do nothing with the new one. If anyone can
help or point to where I can find help, it would be greatly
appreciated. I am running Fed4 on a 64 bit KV8 pro.

Are latest nVidia drivers OK for GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 on Fedora?
by dondi_2006
Hello,
one of the best motherboards for the new computer I described
in previous messages would be the ASUS A8N-VM CSM: it has
a DVI port, which would save me the cost and cooling problems
of an extra graphic card. Its only problem is the
GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 chipset, which was reported as not working last november:
http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/lofiversion/index.php/t25122.html
Now I see that nVidia has released new drivers just before
Christmas: is anybody already using them successfully on Fedora?
I have tried to log in on the nvidia forum, but it hangs at the registration page...
Thanks in advance for any information,
Webber

LVM on a laptop
by William Murray
Hello all,
I just faced a laptop problem: How to shrink the FC4
allocated space in order to increase the space on another operating
system. I had used the default LVM.
A trusty knoppix liveCD QTparted knows nothing of LVM, so I tried the
FC4 rescue. After a long time, I found:
* resize2fs shrinks the ext3 / area. OK
* lvm lvreduce shrinks the logical volume (different units)
* lvm pvmove allows me to put all the lvm handled stuff physically
together. More different units.
* vgreduce...fails
I think I was supposed to use vgreduce to shrink the space managed in
the volume group - but I couldn't make it work. It only seems to delete
logical volumes.
Finally I reversed all the above operation. Since they are all in
different units, and I had padded a little to be safe, I had to pad
some more on the way back, and now I have wasted space.
Two questions:
*) How could I have made it work?
*) What benefit is there in lvm on a laptop, when you pretty much know
there will only be 1 disk?
Thank you!

evolution
by Edward Beranek
Howdy,
Was trying to configure Evolution to use port 587,
which is the messaging port ESMTP, for TLS SMTP.
Could not locate anything in the Documentation,
except for pop which indicated just using a colon
and typing in the port number after the address.
Tried this for sending, it did not seem to work. Checked the
firewall (iptables) and that was not blocking.
Tried mail on macos x, eudora, thunderbird, and
outlook express. All worked for that port from
these other systems, same subnet.
Tried to use bug buddy to see if there was anything
about this, but it reported that it did not have
any information about evolution or mail.
Anyone have any luck specifying the messaging port
for this software? (for TLS)
I must be missing something here, but so far
I cannot find what it is.

Kudzu question under FC4
by Alessandro Brezzi
Hi all,
I've just upgraded my FC3 x86_64 to FC4 and I've found a different behavior
in kudzu.
I swap the SATA disk from two different machine (both AMD64, MSI/NVIDIA and
ASUS/ATI MoBo/graphic card with VIA KT800 Chipset) and in FC3, after the
boot, Kutzu reported the differences, mainly the graphic card.
Now under FC4 Kudzu seem not to do the work, at least for the graphic card,
so I've to manually redo the configuration.
Where, except man pages, can I find informations/howto for the current
version of kudzu?
TIA
