Grub prompt after installing FC4
by James Bridge
I've noticed a couple of threads complaining about just getting a grub
prompt on trying to boot FC4. I've found one reason that this happens,
which may be relevant to other users.
I have a dual boot system so hda1 is reserved for windows. I tried using
the auto-partition facility to set up the rest of the hard drive for
FC4. This booted ok and would have worked except that I need to replace
the libvgahw.a file to get a usable display so I have to edit the root
partition before I can boot. Knoppix couldn't read the default LVM
setup, so I tried manual partitions. Following the example of the
automatic setup, I made a separate boot partition, as hda2 and then root
as hda3. This arrangement wouldn't boot - I just got the grub prompt.
The boot partition seemed to have the right files, but there was another
boot folder in hda3 which was empty and I think this gets mounted on top
of hda2 and hides it. At this stage I tried again without the separate
boot partition and it started to boot normally again. Maybe it would
also work if you removed the empty boot folder from the root partition,
or put root on hda2 and /boot on hda3. I didn't try - I had had enough
of it at this point!
Incidentally, I was also thrown by the installer deciding to give me a
hidden menu at boot up, making me think I had lost windows. I've cracked
it now, but why doesn't the installer give an option and why should it
suddenly work differently?

Fedora, xorg and Matrox P650?
by Peter Boy
Well, I bought a Matrox P650 and expected it to work with the standard
x-org drivers as I'm used to with the various models of the G-series.
OK, my fault, should have asked google before.
There are binary drivers available by Matrox, but unfortunately not for
x86_64. And their drivers used to be a mess and of beta quality for
years now. I googled a little bit and couldn't find any hint for a free
driver.
Does someone (perhaps of Red Hats X team) know, whether I can expect
P650 support by x.org in the near future? Or should I better drop Matrox
at all and buy another video card with dual head support (seems to me
that nvidia's are the only affordable ones)?
Thanks in advance

Fedora Download Page Useless
by Vytas Valas
I went to the trouble of downloading the DVD iso file
for 32 bit systems. The webpage says to use a program
called shalsum to check the download. There is NO
PLACE AT ALL on the download page or anywhere else I
can see to find the shalsum program to check the
download prior to trying to burn it to a DVD disk. I
doubt I am alone in feeling mislead by the RedHat
people when their webpage says use a program which is
NOT available.
Well, I was interested in trying Linux but if the very
download page is this useless then I can only guess
the rest of the online "support" must be just as bad.
Why tell downloaders to use a program you don't make
available for download???????

Group ware solution needed
by Chris Ruprecht
Hello all,
I have received a request from a friend of mine to provide him (and his
10 people company) with a Linux based server that also gives them a
group ware solution.
I was initially thinking of Lotus Notes, but it refuses to run under
Fedora and doesn't play nicely under RH 9 either (I have been testing 4
different Linux-en all day long).
I googled around and didn't come across anything that looks remotely
promising.
Here are the requirements:
(1) Server based email
(2) Server based calendaring for all their people so that they can
schedule meetings and know when all the other staff members are
available
(3) Server based document storage
Their workstations are Windows XP, they have a number of business
applications for which there are no equivalent Linux versions.
The solutions I have in mind are:
for (1): sendmail/cyrus-imap/procmail;
the problem here is that there is no easy way to add rules for procmail
in a way an end-user understands mail filters. They can just about grasp
the concept of mail filtering when they use POP3 (POP3 is not an option
here, though because they want to be able to access their server mail
from anywhere)
for (2): I have not found any solid open-source calendar tool for this.
for (3): I can make shared directories available through SMB but that
just moves the Word/Excel/PDF/whatever-else-format-file chaos from the
workstation to the server. Trying to find a specific document amongst
the 1000s of arbitrarily names files is near impossible.
Any open-source solutions that run under Linux (FC3/FC4 preferred) are
welcome.
Best regards,
Chris

hpssd does not start
by Peter Lesterhuis
Hi,
Since upgrading to FC4 my hpssd will not start. During booting there is
an error message. The same message is displayed when I type:
$ /etc/init.d/hplip restart
rm: cannot remove `/var/run/hpiod.pid': Permission denied [FAILED]
Stopping hpssd: [FAILED]
Starting hpiod:
touch: cannot touch `/var/lock/subsys/hpiod': Permission denied
Starting hpssd: Traceback (most recent call last):

I looked for the module "cupsext" and it seems to be there:
$ locate cupsext
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/cupsext.so
/home/peter/downloads/hplip-0.8.8/prnt/cupsext

/home/peter/downloads/hplip-0.8.8/prnt/cupsext/build/temp.linux-i686-2.3/cupsext.o
/home/peter/downloads/hplip-0.8.8/prnt/cupsext/setup.py
/home/peter/downloads/hplip-0.8.8/prnt/cupsext/cupsext.c
But perhaps it is not loaded.
In FC3 hplip, hpssd and hpoj worked fine.
I can still print, but print-configuration-settings are hard to change.
My printer is a Hp psc-2410.
Does someone know this error? Could someone give me a hist how to solve
this?
Peter.
