GRUB on x86_64
by Jonathan Berry
Hey everyone,
Is a new GRUB for FC3 going to released that fixes the segfault on
x86_64? I finally got frustrated and installed the development
version. It works just fine, or at least better than the released
version. The problem is with the x86_64 NX (no execute) protection.
I found a patch in the GRUB bug tracking system that fixes the problem
for the released version. I tried applying the patch to the src.rpm,
but ran into problems with a shared library. I couldn't even rebuild
the src.rpm with no modifications without getting this error (which
seems strange). The devel version must do things very differently,
because it didn't seem to have the offending code. I know this
probably isn't going to affect every-day use, but when you need it, it
sure hurts to not be able to use it. FC4 will have a new version, so
will that version be released for FC3? Does anyone know when?
Just thougth I'd ask, and throw out a heads up in case anyone else
runs into this. If someone is interested in chasing the problem with
rebuilding the src.rpm, I can provide more info.

output of tar
by Götz Reinicke
Hi,
I have some backupscripts, which save the backup onto an NFS-mounted
share. From time to time, the backup quits with an error:
/bin/tar: /export/servers/home/home-Sun.tar: Cannot open: Input/output error
/bin/tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
How can I get more info on why the backup failes?
Any ideas?
Regards

Sorry... I had forgotten about mythtv... you can get the rpm files for it and
quite a few "plugins" at http://atrpms.net/ I have not used this program,
but it is supposed to record videos, as well as encoding and wathing your
movies also.

network stops responding
by Ankush Grover
hey friends,
I have installed FC3 on HP machine.I have configured Mail
Server(Postfix + Dovecot + Squirrelmail) and also my samba server is
on the same machine.
What happens that for last 2 days when i comes to the office in the
morning the network card stops responding.
I did ping to the gateway 192.168.1.1 but there was no response.
I checked the network cable everything was intact.
I did ifconfig and there was no ipaddress shown for the eth0.
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0B:CD:E2:F1:46
inet addr:192.168.1.3 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

RX bytes:27597573 (26.3 MiB) TX bytes:24603859 (23.4 MiB)

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:3199854 (3.0 MiB) TX bytes:3199854 (3.0 MiB)
As you can see the ipaddress is shown ,but before rebooting the
machine there were no entries in eth0 for "inet addr" and "inet6
addr".
What i forgotten today was to restart the network service ,but
yestarday i did the same and there was not change in the system.Means
still the network device was not responsding.
But after restarting the machine everything works fine.
My Office timings are from 9:30 am to 6:30 PM.
Any pointers where I should look for.
Thanks & Regards

Watching TV and recording video, that is something that I have not had much
luck with either, are you trying to use kdetv ? you might try looking at the
BTTV howto page, as it is not really a simple process. Make sure that your
card is supported withing the bttv kernel driver on the howto page they have
a pretty comprehensive listing of the cards that are supported. then you
have to make the actual device nodes, and since Fedora core uses udev to
create the nodes, you are going to have to write the rules for udev to create
the right device nodes. I think that kdetv wants to use the /dev/video or
dev/video0 . As far as capturing goes, the only decent video capture program
is called cinelerra, as none of the tv programs I have come across will
actually do any video capture, they all just do stills, which doesn't do much
good when you are trying to record video.....

Upgrade to FC4 from FC3 without having to re download and then burn cds and recreate partition?
by Sam Johnson
So, all I have to do is download the FC4 boot.iso, burn it, boot from
the disc, and then what?
Also, someone mentioned a hard drive install. Seems like a good
idea... How does that work?
I found a boot.iso on the Fedora download server.
