Grub drive assignments
by David Niemi
How do the drive assignments work in Grub?
I have 4 hard drives in a computer:
hda - ntfs data disk
hdb - ntfs data disk
sda - FC3, Grub, used LVM default installation with SELinux
sdb - ntfs, WinXP
During the install initially grub was going to be installed to hda which
I didn't want so I unplugged the 2 drives and installed with the 2 SATA
active. Because of this sda is hd0 in Grub and sdb is hd1. Once I
plugged the other 2 drives back in Grub wouldn't boot to WinXP.
At the moment I change the boot priority to sdb in the bios to boot to
WinXP. This is the pertinent sections of my grub.conf:
*********************************
title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.667)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-1.667.img
title Other
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
*********************************
I tried some Google searches, man grub, and fought with info grub to no
avail.
How do I change the drive assignments to get Grub to point to the right
drive to boot WinXP also?
Thanks

Need LVM help.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
I am trying to help a person who has a system with two 250G hard disks
(non-SCSI). He would like to use the two disks (or partitions from the
two disks) as a single LVM volume. Now I have read the HOWTO for LVM
but I am still confused. The answers to some questions would be
helpful. We are using FC3.
If the disks are partitioned as follows:
/dev/hda
/dev/hda1 -> /boot
/dev/hda2 -> /swap
/dev/hda3 -> ?
/dev/hdb
/dev/hdb1 -> ?
I have tried to create the LVM volumes using disk druid.
What we would like to do is combine /dev/hda3 and /hdb1 into a logical
volume. Does that make sense as a goal? I assume that the Logical
Volume could be mounted at /
Now the real questions?
/dev/hda3 and /dev/hdb1 have been set to type 8e by disk druid.
1. How does the reference to the Logical volume appear in grub.conf? Does
the device.map deal with this?
2. How does the reference to the logical volume appear in fstab?
3. Can the Fedora 3 rescue disk deal with a system with this
structure? Can it mount the Logical Volume? Again how do I refer to it
in the mount arguments?
4. And am I completely off base with my questions, since I suspect
that I really don't know what I am doing?

Core 3 Install
by John Kuna
I am tired of the BS with Windows and finally choose
to give this a try. This has to be the easiest Linux
install I've done. It found all the hardware,
including a rented cable modem. I have had no boot
problems and very little other concerns.
Keep up the great work.
