Static Kernel booting issues... for server oriented custome kernel
by jery_wang
Ran in to a fascinating problem,
Background:
I need a custome compiled kernel that is static.. (i.e. all drivers built into the kernel... not modular) for a server system that is being built.
I have generated 2 kernels:
1 with module loading enabled.
1 with module loading disabled.
For the server system the kernel will be deployed on module loading must be disabled.
Problem:
If I try to boot the kernel with module loading disabled and the boot process halts with failure to open initial console. But, I boot the kernel with module loading enabled, and the boot proceeds fine everything functions.
The problem may be in the way udev is setup in the fedora core 3 initialization.
Questions:
1) Has anyone tried turning module loading off and booted
successfully? If so I would appreciate knowing how you
solved the boot problem I have run into.
2) Does anyone have a fix or suggestions of a fix for the
sysinit scripts for the system.
Thanks for any suggestions...

I too am interested in answers to this question. I am trying to get a
Colorado T1000 working in FC3.

Fedora Core 2: initrd failed to mount ext3 root fs.
by KokHow Teh
Hi list;
I just installed Fedora Core 2 last 2 days. The binaries work fine
from the installation CDs that I have no problem installing the full system
and booting up the machine i686 P4. However, when I build the kernel from
the source with the default configuration for arch/i386, booting up the
machine failed due to initrd failing to mount the ext3 root file system. It
failed when linuxrc trying to mount the root fs with pivot_root(). Any
insight is appreciated.
Thanks.

how to neutralize the control-space key-binding
by Mitsuho Iizuka
Hi,
Does anyone know how to neutralize(destroy) the control-space
key-binding to htt? kanji-input subwindow ?
I have just noticed both control-space and shift-space binded to kanji
input small subwindow on all windows after daily yum updates. I think
just shift-space key-binding is enough to have htt? subwindow because
I can not specify region by control-space especially on emacs.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Fedora Core 2: initrd failed to mount ext3 root fs.
by KokHow Teh
Hi;
I used the configuration under /boot and with ramdisk support as
verified in `make xconfig`. Unfortunately I can't (or I don't know) how to
capture the boot console and post it here. However, I saw the ramdisk
booting fine. It is only when the system is about to mount the ext3 rootfs
it fails. Any idea what's wrong with that?

Which configuration is that? The one the Fedora Core 2 kernel comes with
under /boot?

Lacking ramdisk support?

RE: Webmin / Usermin and port blocking
by Aaron M. Hirsch
Setup port forwarding via iptables, or you could utilize something like
dnydns's webhop service

Subject: Webmin / Usermin and port blocking
Webmin and Usermin are accessed remotely through ports 10000 and 20000
respectively - as in http://www.myserver.net:20000
I work in a company that blocks port 20000 and all other non-essential
outgoing port requests. Are there any alternative ways of accessing a
port-bound service like this to get around secure large company sites
that block direct port connections?
I guess what I'm asking is about ways to access Usermin as a straight
HTTP:// connection (ie http://www.myserver.net/usermin) rather than port
20000 by making changes on my server.
Thanks in advance,
bob

After upgrading to RedHat Fedora Core 3, I run into the following

I tried the approach of removing the krb lib entry from /etc/ld.so.conf:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-January/msg00831.html
but still get this error. I also tried upgrading 'up2date' to
up2date-4.3.69-1, the latest version that I could find.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Umask
by Jay Paulson
Fedora's default umask is set to 022. I need it to be set to 002 so
that different users within the same group can ftp and download the
same file(s). However, I noticed that when I set the umask to 002 it
changes it system wide! I was wondering if this was a security risk?
My network admin wants us to ssh in change the owner of the file using
the sudo chown command, download the file, then change the owner back.
I REALLY don't want to do this for every file that I want to work on.
There has to be a way to change this and I think umask is the way to do
it. The thing is I do not want to go changing the umask of the system
without knowing if it's secure or not.
Thanks for any help.

Still missing xeyes
by Aaron Gaudio
Fedora Core 3 no longer includes the xeyes utility as part of xorg-x11-
tools. Is it provided by some other rpm?
