Thomas, well said. We were all newbies once - even the pompus types that
refuse to admit it. I still make mistakes - one thing I don't need is
someone flaming me when I'm trying to just get a little help with Fedora.

Whatever happened to the principle of trying to keep "on topic" for the newsgroup you're posting to? Isn't that idea just as important, if not more so, than where you insert your response? You've all wasted far more bandwidth and time beating this horse to death than could ever be wasted by scrolling through the occasional e-mail when what you felt shouldn't be at the top was.
MOVE ON! GET A LIFE! But most importantly... Get back to the topic of Linux, Fedora and open source. None of which has anything to do with top or bottom posting. The list is losing membership because of all this nonsense. That should be of much more concern to you than where I might enter my text.

DNS with Fedora Core 3
by Hugo Rebello
Guys,
I am using Fedora Core 3 like my DNS server. It's working very well.
However I need active "allow update" option to Windows 2003 Active
Directory.
It's working also, but just only one server. If I included two address
in "allow update" option, I cannot restart the named.
How can I include more than one server in "allow update" option ?
Thank you.
Cheers,
Hugo

VSFTPD and Fedora 3
by Arnaldo Bento
Hello
I tried to install the ftp server program VSFTPD (vsftpd-2.0.3-1.i386.rpm)
but he was not possible for a problem of dependencies.
I got the following message:
Failed dependencies
libcrypt.so.5
libssl.so.5
After a search in net I found some answers that say:
-Installing openssl-0.9.7 this will also install the archives that I
mention.
I made this, installing the openssl-0.9.7f.tar.gz but I got the same
dependencies
Can you help me.
Thanks in advance.

Please help me with turning off unneeded daemons.
by barophobia
Hello,
I've recently installed FC3 sans-gui (although there still is a basic
X11 gui for some reason) and I would like to turn off all the unneeded
daemons on my system. I'm coming to the list because I'm not familiar
enough with the system to know exactly which daemons can be turned off
and which cannot. I've already made a *few* changes but not as nearly
as many as I'd like.
Here are some specifics about the servre that should help determining
the needed daemons. (The output from chkconfig --list can be found at
the end of this email.)
* I don't need a gui at all.
* I don't need printing.
* I have two harddrives connected via IDE. (No SCSI, no RAID.)
* I will be doing web development using Apache/PHP/MySQL
* SNMP will be used
* All things relating to email will be used.
* FTP will be used.
I think that about does it.
Your help is appreciated greatly!
Chris.

Sendmail/dovecot error
by Chris Strzelczyk
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has seen this error in dovecot:
Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/username: LF not found where expected
I believe this is due to a corrupt mailbox, however, I don't have a way
to check the mailbox. I did put a new on in place and everything
works.
Is there a way to check for corrupt messages within a mailbox?
THanks

FC3 kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3 unable to boot from USB HD
by Anthropic Principle
Hi all,
I configured my FC3 box (kernel 2.6.9-1.667) for booting from USB hard disk
as described on http://simonf.com/usb. The kernel 2.6.9-1.667 boot from the
USB HD unit without problems and all work flawlessy.
Yesterday I tried to up2date my FC3 box and so I upgraded the kernel to the
2.6.10-1.770_FC3 but even done again the procedure of rebuilding the initrd
image (as described on http://simonf.com/usb) the new kernel still doesn't
boot giving everytime an early mount error (mount: error 6 mounting ext 3).
Any suggestions in order to solve that problem ?
Many thanks,
AP

Help with Fedora Core 3 Freezes and sound system
by Roberto R. Heredia
Hello Dear Firend,
I am running Fedora Core 3 on an IBM. I was using Mandrake 10.0 and
everything was working fine. I am experiencing two problems:
1. My computer freezes if I leave it unattended for a while. I disabled
the screen saver, and still freezes. I have to re-start everything. I
have the suspicion that it is the X-server?
2. My sound system doesn't work. Any ideas?
Thanks in advanced.
Roberto
