Network Manager
by David Donnelly
I am very impressed with this program. Good work to the creator(s).
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/jim_lawrence/network_manager/
I am using ndiswrapper with a built-in wifi (broadcom chipset) on a
Compaq R3000 laptop. I have not previously been able to scan other
available networks or view signal strength because of the fact I am
using ndiswrapper. This has given me that ability.
However, having the ability to view multiple choices means that I can
see all my neighbour's as well. I am just wondering if there is a way to
specify a "preferred" network. My SSID is not encrypted but does not
broadcast either. I can connect if I specify the SSID. I also would like
to know if I can automate the connection process on boot that it trys to
connect to my SSID. The Network Manager Daemon starts but I need to run
"NetworkManagerInfo" from the console to start a scan. I would like this
process to start automatically if possible. When I do run the command,
it connects to my neighbour even though I was last connected to my own
access point.

List Rules
by James McKenzie
All:
Here is the first edition of the List Rules.
The first thing is that I, like you, are a regular member of the list
but have read through many messages about 'netequitte' within this list.
Just a couple of hints:
1. Set your mailer to send only plain text messages to the list. HTML
mail does not work well, is blocked by some of our list members, and
sadly wastes bandwidth. Also, some members, like myself, disabled
display of HTML mail because they can be used for spam detectors and can
send malware code.
2. Place your replies at the bottom of messages. This is an old method
used for many years. Preface any text to be replied to with a
character, most folks use a greater than sign '>' but any special
printable character will suffice.
3. Search the list archives before posting a question. Many topics
have been discussed extensively in prior messages. Also, please read
through the Release Notes for Fedora Core. There are major changes with
this release, including making Secure Linux (SELinux) a default.
4. Placing two dashes and a space between message content and your
signature, will in most cases, result in automatic cutoff of your
signature when your messages are replied to. Please note: Some mailers
will not display any content to include this line and any lines below it.
5. To unsubscibe from the list you can visit the Fedora Mail List web
page at http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list
6. Please contact me directly with suggestions and comments.

Dual Boot, Grub, FC3-WinXpSP2, 2 drives. No go.
by Nat Gross
Hi;
I installed FC3 on a WinXP-sp2 system, whose c: drive was NOT being used
(for real), or so I thought. And gave the entire drive, hda, to FC3. I
reasoned that since my winXP booted into drive E:, the second drive,
hdb, Grub would have no issues with booting Windows. However, although
it boots FC3 nicely, when I elect to boot xp, it displays 'rootnoverify
(hd1,0) chainloader +1' and stops. Due to the partioning of hdb (as
listed below), I have tried hd1,1 as well, with the same results.
The hardware is as follows:
Dell Intel 1.6ghz, 768 meg ram, 2 hard drives, 20gig and 60gig.
Disk info:
hda:
hda1 1-33, /boot, 259meg, ext3.
hda2 34-164 swap, 1 gig
hda3 165-2498, /, 18gig, ext3.
hdb:
hdb1 1-3633, 28.4gig, fa32. (not mounted, or touched with Linux.)
hdb2 3634-7299,28.7gig, Extended. ( ditto)
hdb5 3634-7299,28.7gig,ntfs. (don't know why its listed twice. whatever.)
The /boot/grub/grub.conf:
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda3
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.667)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-1.667.img

=========================
As noted above, I also tried rootnoverify (hd1,0) .
Thank you

Webmin / Usermin and port blocking
by Bob Brennan
Webmin and Usermin are accessed remotely through ports 10000 and 20000
respectively - as in http://www.myserver.net:20000
I work in a company that blocks port 20000 and all other non-essential
outgoing port requests. Are there any alternative ways of accessing a
port-bound service like this to get around secure large company sites
that block direct port connections?
I guess what I'm asking is about ways to access Usermin as a straight
HTTP:// connection (ie http://www.myserver.net/usermin) rather than
port 20000 by making changes on my server.
Thanks in advance,
bob

update glibc to glibc-devel-2.3.4-10.i386.rpm on FC2

Can anyone tell me the safest way to upgrade these packages all at once? Is
there a way to do it with yum without adding the devel repositories or
another easy way?

Small Firefox Dependency Issue
by David Cary Hart
I noticed in the prelink log that firebox-bin (1.01) had a dependency
problem. Using ldd, I determined that the problems were two files;
libxpcom.so and libmozjs.so. Both of these can be found
in /usr/lib/firefox-1.01. Copying them to /usr/lib solves the
dependencies. Is this a real problem worth a bugzilla?

Black Screen After YUM Update Revisited:
by Mark Sargent
Hi All,
I previously posted about a problem with a black screen with Fedora 2
after updating via yum. Unfortunately, on Knoppix, where I've been
coming to you from, I've lost access to my mail app, hence starting a
new thread. Following on from the posts by some that it may be related
to my graphic card drivers, nVidia, I installed another card that I had
here @ home, ATI Radeon 7500, but, I still get the same, a black screen
and where it continually changes back and forth to a text based login,
which disappears to quickly for me to actually login. I also went and
did a yum update through the recovery cd process, but no luck there,
either. Someone mentioned posting some ouput from certain files, but, as
I can't access the previous mail, can't know what it was. Paul Howarth,
I'n confident you were one who asked for such things. Would you be so
kind as to tell me again what it was.? Cheers, and again, sorry for what
may seem as a double posting of the same problem.
Mark Sargent.

winetools2.1.1 can't locate xdialog 2.1.2-1
by Duncan Lithgow
I'm having trouble installing a windows app - so I thought I'd start
by running winetools. It won't start - yum & smart pm can't find it
so I guess it's not there.
So, I've downloaded it and Xdialog again. I've reinstalled Xdialog and
upon trying to install winetools I get a message that it can't find
Xdialog! Any ideas why?
I can't find any reference to this on google or this list.
