mac web archive
by Dave Stevens
I recently had a friend with an iBook send me a saved web page in mac web
archive format. I can't make sense of it. Is there a way to open this
conveniently? I need to get at some of the graphics in the page. FC3 up to
date and Firefox.

tightening ssh
by Claude Jones
I've been reading up, and talking up, various security strategies. One thing
that is striking to me in looking at logs for my servers are the endless ssh
probes that go on. It appears to be one of the most common. Up till recently,
I had dealt with this by using firewall rules to allow ssh access only to
selected ip addresses - to all others, the port appears closed (I checked
this with port scans). Now, I must change strategies. I need to give access
to an associate who gets his dsl ip address via dhcp, so it's always
changing. I'm not quite ready to try port knocking, so, the other suggestion
I read over and over is to provide ssh on a non-standard port. So, I throw
this out to the collective experience - what's your take on that strategy?
Won't simple scans reveal the existence of ssh access on a non-standard port?
Is this really much protection? Is it merely a question of reducing odds?

Install method question for FC5
by Anil Kumar Sharma
Now this may sound weired ... don't shy the why!
If I have say FC4 CD's, using this to boot, I arrive up to 'Installation
method' prompt and lead it to iso images of FC5 (when available) on HDD
partition FAT32, will this work?
Alternatively
I have FC4 up and running, I get FC5 images (when available) and put them on
HDD lets say anywhere accessible to FC4 (exclude NTFS), can a clean /
fresh setup of FC5 be initiated from within FC4, on free space available on
HDD (to give multi-boot). -no way - is it!

Tape drive
by Matt Morgan
Can anyone recommend a tape drive that meets these requirements?
1) easy to get working in Fedora Core 3 & 4
2) reliable
3) works fine with Amanda
4) stores 200+ Gb on a tape or single set of tapes
If it's easy and obvious how to eject and insert tapes, that's a plus,
since this is going to be in a location without any real techies.
Thanks!

Submitting arguments to rpmbuild
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I'm trying to build an rpm with a little variation. The rpm in question
is audacity, whose start is shown at the end of this message.
There is a line starting "%{!?_without_mp3:" which is evidently a
conditional, controlled by the macro _without_mp3. How can I submit
this to rpmbuild? Or does it have to be edited into the spec file?
Rpmbuild seems to accept options intended for this purpose, since
"rpmbuild --help" returns the following text at the end:
Options implemented via popt alias/exec:
--dbpath=DIRECTORY use database in DIRECTORY
--with=<option> enable configure <option> for
build
--without=<option> disable configure <option> for
build
But I haven't been able to get anything like this to work.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks - jon

Unfortunately it did not work for me. I could install FC3 into a qemu
disk image using an FC3 DVD ISO (I had to rename the .iso to .img,
otherwise qemu would not recognize it). I did a standard workstation
installation and it hung when installing indent. After "rebooting" the
qemu machine the installation continued with firefox as the only package
left and then finished. When trying to "boot" the installed image with
qemu it hangs immediately after the message "booting from hard disk"
with CPU usage (of the host OS) at 100%.
I think I will give it up...

Graphical screen dying on new FC4 install
by Dotan Cohen
I just replaced Win98 with Fedora Core 4 on a friends' computer: AMD
550, 128MB RAM. Now, he can work for a limited amount of time (between
20-150 minutes), then the computer gets stuck. Not even the mouse
works. He can, however, switch to a console with CTR-ALT-F1.
When restarted, there is no graphical mode, only console. If he lets
the computer sit for a few hours, he can boot up a graphical screen,
but after some time the problem reoccurs. Nothing in the computer
(open case) seems unusually hot, which was my first thought.
Any ideas on where to look? Thank you.

At this stage you've told your computer to allow connections to it, but if you've got a router (as you've said), you also need to do something similar with it.
You've got to configure it to allow connections to those ports (if it isn't already), *and* configure it to forward those connections through to the PC you want to run that program on.

This indicates that port 4662, at least, is blocked before your computer even gets to see it. That could be at your router, it could be at your ISP.
Post what router your have, and someone may guide you on reconfiguring it.

Hi Tim and everybody,
This wk I set up directly on Conceptronic Router (C54RU...). I followed instructions at site http://www.portforward.com/ . First I got IP, then on router I enabled port forwarding and set up the three ports and put IP. But when I restarted I got another IP, then I got again LowID. Any help? Best regards, Joao.
