Sylpheed-Claws: how to continue getting a mail from a connection break?
by Strong
Sometimes when getting my mail from a server, the last one breaks the
connection so that after some time when I try to get it again, the
Sylpheed-Claws-1.9.15-1.fc4 gets the downloaded messages again. I want
to reduce the traffic, so don't want that that be the case. Tell me
please how I can do that? Thank You.

KDE missing menu entries
by Sergey
KDE menu system (XDG, legacy) seems to be complicated and all messed up.
Browsing /etc/xdg/menus/*.menu XMLs I still can't get now the menu items are
sorted. For example,
Why Amusement applications are completely missing from KDE menu? This item
has /usr/share/applications/kde/amor.desktop has
Categories=Qt;KDE;Amusement;, however it is not shown anywhere. Changing
Amusement to, for example, Utility makes it appear in menu. kteatime is
another example.
One more.
Amarok won't start when called from KDE multimedia control applet. Having
spent a week I have figured out that it's started up via a dcop start call
(seems to be so). The dcop call is performed with the app name "amarok".
However the amarok desktop application link is "fedora-amarok", thus it can't
be found and started. A workaround is to
rename /usr/share/applications/kde/fedora-amarok.desktop. Now it is started
up well.
So the question is: how do I make the lost items appear in KDE menu, without
manually adding each.
Sergey.

Practical experiences:
First, our Unix team maintains uid 0 accounts for all the team members on each Unix / Linux / AIX box we support. Many actions can be taken during system installs or problems via these accounts, and we retain some accountability for who has been on the box touching things. Also, we each have our own password, so if the root password is changed for some reason and we don't all know about it, we can still get in and do some (possibly all) of our work.
Note that having multiple uid 0 users will, in itself, break some things. SuSE's user maintenance program will not tolerate multiple users having the same uid (0 or otherwise). The way we've gotten around that is by using LDAP authentication, and defining the additional uid 0 users in LDAP. This way SuSE's tool does not see the "error".
Some vended products MUST be installed via root (not another uid 0 account). Something in the install checks for root, and aborts the install if using some other userid. Others must run as root.
The su - command is specific to the root userid. You can su to other uid 0 users, but you have to specify the userid to do it. So if you removed root, then you've removed the ability to use the "su -" command.
Last, here's an appeal to any and all vendors / authors of products: Please design your product / application so that it does not need root. Certainly not to run, and preferably not to install. I know that it's tempting to do the install as root, so that you can do everything you need to, without any manual intervention on the part of the installer, but that means that the person doing the install must have root privilege, and we'd prefer to allow the people in charge of the application be able to do the install. I'm willing to create the userids the app needs, and set up accesses, but I don't want to have to be present for every application install done on my systems. It takes up my time, and is unnecessary, other than the fact that you want to install via root.

Hi there --
If you have Webmin installed, its servers section has a web-based gui for
administrating MySQL.

WebCam OpenSource or Free Software?
by Dan Thurman
Hi Folks,
Does anyone have any suggestions for WebCam software, opensourced or
free? I am thinking about creating the software myself but I wanted to see
if there are other people doing it already. So far, I have looked at:
1) FWink
2) WebCam2000
3) Many others but I have not looked at them all....
But these support rather rudimentary things and I need to have
more "bells and whistles" as outlined in the following paragraphs.
I am currently using webcam32 which is/was a really good product for
what I wanted to do, but for the most part it is now legacy and not really
supported anymore unless I wanted to pay big-bucks to upgrade. A company
has purchased the webcam32 software from Kolban and their stuff is not
cheap for what I wanted to do.
What I am interested in is the following features:
1) Support for many cameras. I have an old winnov that supports up to 3
cameras on a framegrabber card so this particular one is seen as ONE camera
from Windows point of view, but I can use a proprientary dll to switch the cameras
and change built-in properties. I guess support different cameras and cards
here might be a bit difficult but anyway it might be a fun project.
2) Supports streaming, so that independent systems w/ cameras on them
can stream the data to whatever site that queries it. Can be directed to a
webpage for streaming or single frame capture.
3) Support for full-axis camera movement for cameras that support it.
4) Has security features; the ability to compare frames at high-speed to
"motion detect" as a percentage of change from 1% to 99% Maybe there
is other security features that can be done but this is one that I know about
supported on webcam32 from Kolban
5) Support for FTP, dialup, multi-file formats (jpg, giff,?) and whatever useful
things that are nice even if not absolutely necessary? I use the FTP so that the
data can be moved into a secured central fileserver and filenames are auto-managed.
I am sure there could be more that can be added than the list above, but I think
the project will need to start with a basic framework and keep it simple and then
add little by little as it evolves.
Thanks!
Dan

username/uid restrictions
by Terry Horsnell
'morning all,
I see from my new RHEL4 sysadmin guide that uid's up to 500 are
reserved for system use. When I first began setting up my
Unix userbase some 15 years ago, I unfortunately chose to start
at uid 100, so I now have to change the uid's of some 400 users,
36 million files, on a hundred or so boxes. OK, this is do-able
and should be more-or-less 'transparent to the user'.
(Since I'm going to make a change, should I start at 1000 and change
the lot? How reliable is the 500?)
The thing that concerns me more, is the plethora of reserved
usernames. There seems to be no rule to distinguish a reserved
username (presumably the list in the RHEL sysadmin guide is
going to grow) and its only a matter of time before some
newly allocated name collides with one which has been given to
a user. In fact, I cant find anywhere what the rules are for
usernames. Character-set? How many chars?
Pity that reserved names arent systematic in some way (like
always starting with sys_ or somesuch).
I'm not looking forward to the day when a new system-username
duplicates the username of one of the directors, which he has
had for the last 15 years, and which is also his email address
held on mailing lists and institutions all over the place...
Any advice out there?
Cheers,
Terry.

er, sort of, but not really.
for files that are a core part of a distribution, well, yes.
outside of that, you're more likely to see files being added to /usr/local/bin
for very sound reasons.
and then, of course, there are /bin, /sbin, /usr/sbin, and a few others.
for software that presumes a solaris model, you may see /opt as the root
location, although this isn't very common in linux environments (however,
/opt is a standard location for add on systems for Mac OS X users running
darwinports, but then, that's not linux).
this is only for executables that are supposed to be runnable from the
shell; you may also find executables in other locations (/usr/lib,
/usr/libexec, etc.) that aren't supposed to be directly invoked by
users.

RE: basic operations
by Nix, Robert P.
There are several acceptable places, and many more that aren't quite so.
/usr/local/bin or /usr/local/<productid> would be acceptable. Many products install in /opt/<productid>. I have teams installing to /apps/<productid>. The bottom line is that there is no single magic place.
Some things install to /usr/bin, but this could make applying maintenance an issue.
You should also note that c:\Program files is also just a convention. Many Windows products don't go anywhere near that path, choosing to create their own. Most (many?) Windows products also ask you where you want them to install, so things could drift away from the Program files directory this way as well.
Hope this helps.

To whom it may concern,
Ive recently left the dark and moved into linux, i just have this one query
for now:
In windows all programs were installed into a folder called 'Program Files',
in linux, where is that equivelant folder? What is it called?
I know that this question is fairly trivial, is there anywhere else i can go
to find out basic information such as this?
I greatly appreciate the help.
Best
