OT What would be the best script type
by slim
To do the following?
I just got one of those fancy-dancy gmail accounts, and while I aint
crazy about the email side of it, the one gig storage gave me an idea.
what Id like to do, is make a script that will gather certain dir. and
files for back up, split some tar.gz files at 9.8 meg each and email
them to my gmail account... the gmail account has a 10 meg limit on a
single message hence the need to split the file...
I can think of a way to do this via php or perl but I was thinking a
shell script would do it more efficiently... what do you all think?
Thanks

Metamail in fedora?
by Sandip Bhattacharya
I was porting a script from Red Hat 7.3 to FC2, when I discovered that
metamail doesn't seem to be there in FC at all. Has this been replaced
by some other package?
How do shell scripts in FC2 send mime mail messages anyway? Earlier,
using metasend was the best way out!

ppp not getting dns info on connect
by Chuck Sterling
On fc2, all updates installed, ppp connects to my local ISP and I get a
dynamic IP address as expected, but the default gateway and dns server
IP addresses are not set up. This did work correctly on fc1, and does
under fc2 when connecting via ethernet at $WORK.
There has been some discussion on this, but no resolution that I see
except to enter the gateway and dns info manually into the ppp setup
dialog. I have done this and of course it works or I would not be
posting this note.
But. Is there another solution that will get ppp to fill in the missing
items, and if not, is anyone working on it or has it at least been
posted as a bug? Or did I just miss the whole discussion while asleep
one night...?
Thanks,
Chuck Sterling

Locking down Fedora???
by Matt Krause
I am looking on ways to accomplish the following using Fedora Core 2
and would appreciate help and suggestions.
1. Upon boot, just display a graphic with no status, and no show
details and such.
2. Disable keyboard input on boot and renable it when it has completed booting
3. Disable cntrl-alt-backspace in X Windows.
Anyone know how I could accomplish any of these?

partitions
by Marcelo Manzato
Hi,
I was wanting to do the following partition schema on
my computer:
- Windows 98 (FAT32 f.s.)
- Windows XP (NTFS f.s.)
- Fedora Core 2 (ext3 f.s.) -> partitions to /boot, /,
and swap.
I started by creating a primary partition to 98 with
fdisk, then I installed it. After, I booted the
computer with Windows XP's CD, created another
partition with its own partition tool, and installed
it. Finally, I rebooted the computer with FC2's CD,
and created the /, /boot and sawp partitions with its
partition tool. It created the GRUB file, installed,
and since then, the system couldn't find anymore the
windows 98 and xp partitions. When I select windows in
the grub menu, the system shows an error message that
cannot find the partition. I've seen the grub.conf,
tried to config it by another way, but without
success. The strange thing is that I did it with FC1
and everything was working perfectly.
Thanks

FC2: ppp0 message
by dgpet
I now seem to occasionally get this message, typically when closing
down, but sometimes in the current terminal. The ppp0 connection seems to have closed
down normally well before this. ( ISDN in Australia).
Message from syslogd@davep at Mon Jun 28 16:14:36 2004 ...
davep kernel: unregister_netdevice: waiting for ppp0 to become free.
Usage count = 1

Re: FC2 and Partition Magic

The PM update refused to install.
Yes, the Windows I use is XP.
Booting both systems works fine.

Setting up a mail server
by Slade Hornick
I'm in need of setting up a mail server for just a couple of accounts. The
email however is going to be huge for these accounts and I need something
robust enough to handle at least 15000 emails per day. It will only be
receiving not sending.
I have installed Fedora Core 2 about 15 times with various packages and
tried various things (different mail servers, sendmail, qmail, postfix,
etc...) and each time I get to a dead-end.
Does anyone know of a How-To for a beginner to setup a simple machine for
this task?
Thanks
Slade

Color coding
by Michael Sullivan
This is just a curiosity for me, but is there a chart somewhere online
that says what the colors mean for different filenames? I know that
regular files show up with white foreground and executable files have
green foreground, but what does the brown background mean?
