This is on an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Socket 939 -- AMD 64) motherboard.
I am running Fedora Core 3 x86_64, which is kept fully up-to-date with
the latest updates, on this. I also see the same messages on a Pentium 4
system I just installed Fedora Core 3 (x86) on. That system is also
fully up-to-date.
Thanks

Home Music Server software
by Javier Perez
Hi.
I installed a FC3 system to work as my Home Music Server. It is replacing an
old 100 CD Mega Changer that is quite full by now.
The system uses the TV as monitor and I added a wireless keyboard and a
wireless mouse to control it from afar.
After some initial problems and Google lookups I had everything up and
running reasonably well.
My question is, What software is best to work as a multimedia center. I am
not doing DVR stuff yet although I might in the future, but it is not a
priority yet.
I want to digitize my 100+ CDs into the hard disk, play them back, and make
it very easy to search the hard disk for music. I want it to be very easy
to compile new playlists and save them.
If it were up to me, Sound Juicer and Xine would fit the bill, but I am not
the only user of the system. There are other, older, people at home who are
not as computer-savy as me and I would like this to be their introduction to
computing, maybe they will get more interested once they master one activity
(creating playlists, playing their favorite music) with the computer to do
more. :)
Thanks for you recommendations.
Javier Perez

Why is it that ssh with X11 auth forwarding fails -sometimes- on FC[23]?
by Dan Stromberg
I've been making heavy use of X11 xauth forwarding.
However, I'm finding that while I can (mostly?) reliably forward xauth
data and $DISPLAY from an RHEL 3 host to AIX 5.1, Solaris 8 and others,
it only works with Fedora Core 2 and Fedora Core 3 -some- of the time.
In general, if I ssh -X enough times with an FC[23] system, eventually I
get good X11 forwarding (it seems to help to leave previous, failed
sessions open), but it seems to take from 2 to 6 iterations to get it to
forward - doing the -same- thing each time.
I tried turning off iptables on the FC[23] sshd servers, but that didn't
help.
I'm using "ssh -X -A". RHEL 3's ssh client doesn't appear to support -Y
yet.
Any suggestions for me?
Thanks!

Fw: FC3 Install Problem - Update
by Rich
Just an update for anyone that may be experiencing the problem below. The work around is to select the text install option. I believe that the "Out of Range" message from my monitor meant that the monitor could not adjust to the resolution that the installer wanted to use. At any rate the install went well and I am in the process of updating using yum.

Subject: FC3 Install Problem
Encountered a problem during installation initiation. After Anaconda checks for video card, monitor, and mouse it starts X-server. When that happens I get a message from my monitor "Out of Range" I have a VX900-2. Any ideas on how to get around this. Works fine with FC2.

Connecting to Wireless Networks
by Rick Bilonick
I asked about connecting to public wireless networks before but did not
get much input. I am using RH 9 on a laptop. I have no problem
connecting to my home wireless network. I used the gui network program
to do the configuration. It uses wep in managed mode and dhcp. It was
simple to do.
But connecting the same laptop to other wireless networks has never
worked. No matter how I try to configue using the gui interface, I never
get a connection, regardless of whether the network has an essid and wep
or not. The green led on the wireless card (D-Link 650 - prism 2
chipset) always flashes (it is solid when it connects). (I have no
trouble connecting the laptop to wired networks in hotels.)
So I have recently tried using iwconfig. I open a shell as root and
enter commands like:
/sbin/iwconfig eth1 key off
/sbin/iwconfig eth1 mode Managed
/sbin/iwconfig eth1 essid any
/sbin/ifconfig eth1 up
/sbin/dhclient eth1
if I the network doesn't use wep. If the network requires an essid
and/or wep, I include the information and modify the above commands
apropriately.
When I use these commands, the card connects to the network (the green
light stays on without blinking) and the icon on the panel shows a
connection. If I do a "netstat -r" I can see the gateway's IP address. I
can ping this IP address and my computer at home. But I can't do much
else. DNS doesn't work and I can't find any web pages. The web browser
is supposed to go to a login web page but I can never get to it. My
understanding was all I needed was an empty "dhclient.conf" file and I
would get a lease and the domain name server address. I do get a lease
but I don't think DNS is working. I can't ssh or telnet anywhere. (Yet I
can ping as described above.)
I have tried this on two different wireless networks (Barnes & Noble and
a university library). I connect but can't do anything other than ping
some IP addresses. I cannot get to the login web pages or any other web
pages. What else do I need to do? Something else must need to be
configured. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

cannot install FC3 on one PC, but can on an other PC
by Erik Grootjans
I have an FC3 installation DVD
I tryed to install from the DVD on a 2,53 MHz P4 computer
and i get after the return
loading vmlinuz .........................................
loading initrd.img
.................................................................
.
.
.
running install ...
running /sbin/loader
after this it stays quiet.... nothing happens anymore.
I tryed to boot from a CD-rom with the boot.iso image ---> just the same
an other CD burned on an different burning speed --> just the same
I did the CD in an old P3 500MHz PC
and it booted
checked the DVD ---> pass
installed and updated FC2 to FC3
For my this is the question: why can i not install on the P4 2,53MHz
Computer. FC2 just went fine.
Does anyone have an idea what i could try.
Thanks

yum unfinished update
by Amy M
When I started a yum update but stopped before the installation stage,
those packages (whose headers have been downloaded) will not get updated
the next time I do a fresh yum update. Is there any way to install
those packages?
