login/kerberos strangeness
by Steve Blackwell
Well, maybe it is working the way it's supposed to but it appears
strange to me.
Some time ago I found an old 486 machine lying around at work so I set
it up to be an NTP server and a kerberos server. I added my login id,
my desktop machine and a development machine as principles (if I
remember the the terminology correctly) to the KDC and everything
worked just fine.
Later I got a new desktop machine and I have installed FC2 on it. I did
not install kerberos, although I see that the krb5-libs rpm is
installed, and I did not add the new machine the the KDC. Recently I
tried to log in to my new machine via gdm but I was unable to. I traced
the problem to the fact that the NTP and KDC machine was turned off.
What I don't understand is why my machine was using the KDC to
authenticate my login when I didn't tell it anything about the KDC. I
do have the same login name on both my old and new desktop machines.
Can someone explain what is happening here? Does gdm use kerberos by
default and somehow discovered that there was a KDC on the network?
Thanks,
Steve

logrotate sendmail
by Edwin Dicker
Hi all,
Since the last Logrotate on sep.26 on my system sendmail is not logging
anymore to /var/log/maillog but only to /var/log/maillog.1 ( the previous
maillog file )
I have restarted sendmail but no effect.
What can be the cause of sendmail keeping logging to maillog.1 ??
TIA

rpm --checksig -v blah.rpm
by TongKe Xue
Hi all,
If the result of the above line is:
Header V3 DSA signature: OK, key ID 4f2a6fd2
Header SHA1 digest: OK (33ea204e5c31dd5fae462cb9af94b2a40577309d)
MD5 digest: OK (aa6a32055c04da574c186c30757badeb)
V3 DSA signature: OK, key ID 4f2a6fd2
Then does it mean that the line is okay to go? (I've never used
--checksig before, and it seems weird to me that
1) fedora(a)redhat.com is not mentioned and
2) the fingerprint "CAB4 4B99 6F27 744E 8612 7CDF B442 69D0 4F2A
6FD2" mentioned
at http://fedora.redhat.com/about/security/
is also not mentioned anywhere.
Thanks,
---TongKe

FC-2 iptables settings
by Timothy Murphy
When I installed FC-2 I was asked which firewall I wanted,
and I opted for the default Medium security.
Where are the settings for the 3 options I was offered?
Are they actually different iptables settings,
and if so where are they to be found?

plustek 100 parallel scanner question
by Jude DaShiell
Is this scanner linux-compatible? I didn't find its number in the sane
documentation and I haven't yet figured out how to adjust the sane back
ends configuration file to make this one work. If it's not compatible,
does linux have a linux-scanners.org site listing scanners that are
compatible?

RE: alsa/sound question

Nevermind about #1, found help in a debian forum post about the same thing.
Basically manually load the oss module and run /dev/MAKEDEV audio :)
Still haven't figured out #2 though

upgrade to kernel-smp-2.6.5-1.358 on a P4P800 motherboard
by Søren Neigaard
I have just bought a P4P800 motherboard (ASUS) and I was told by a
friend that there was a bug in the kernel preventing it from working
with this motherboard, so I had to burn a special ISO to be able to
install Fedora Core 2. So this I did, and it worked perfectly.
Nu I can see that the up2date tool wants me tu update my kernel to the
kernel-smp-2.6.5-1.358 Fedora build kernel.
Is this safe? Or will that update break my system on this motherboard?
Best regards
Søren

Linksys PC Card Ver. 3 and ATI Mach 64
by Kevin F. Glynn
I've installed Core 2 on an Armada E500, PIII 500 MHz with 192 MB RAM.
I have one drive configured as a dual-boot with Win 2000 and Red Hat
Linux 9. I was able to configure my Linksys PC Card Ver 3 and the
video adapter as an ATI Mach 64 successfully. When trying that with
Core 2 the video adapter defaults back to an ATI Rage Mobility card and
I can't activate the wireless NIC card, it does not seem to be present,
delaying intitialization (orinoco_cs).
Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

cpuspeed and cpudyn not working with my mobile pentium 4, please help!

I'd like to know why I can't have cpu throttling. :(
I'm using the 2.6.7 kernel in fedora core 2.
I can see that I do have the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/*
files but if I restart cpuspeed or start dyncpu they hang and if I do a
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq, cat hangs
too. And I can't kill them, even sending -9 signal!! :(
I tried loading the speedstep-ich and I have a ich based south bridge
with no luch too. But I only got a module speedstep-ich not found. How
do I know if the speedstep-ich is already compiled in kernel? and I
can't find it with /sbin/lsmod but I do have the cpufreq files...
I could notice that I don't have the powersave as one of the available
governors, I only have performance and userspace.
I also noticed that:
cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/info
processor id: 0
acpi id: 0
bus mastering control: yes
power management: no
throttling control: no
limit interface: no
and if I do cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling
it says:
<not supported>
Why??
I'd like to be able to use cpu throttling so I can get longer battery
usage and less heat.
Please, could you help me??
I don't know what information I could give you besides that. If I'm
missing something, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Francisco Figueiredo Jr.
