README: Current Fedora Core 2 Problems & Solutions/Helpful Links
by Lisa (TheAverageJane)
Who is this email for?
People who are new to fedora-list and most likely new to Fedora Core 2.
What is this email for?
It's a listing of the latest/most thread producing problems that crop up
with Fedora Core 2. It is an attempt to stave off the same questions
being asked over and over again on this list. The intent is that new
folks will read it and find the info they need without asking here as
this is an *extremely* busy list. Also included are helpful links to get
a newbie started reading the most important news and information about
Fedora, its included window managers, and Linux in general.
"I'm tired of seeing this thing every week!"
Filter it out! Here's a very informative thread posted for Ximian
Evolution:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-August/msg01250.html
If any oldbies have quick tips on filtering with other email apps,
please mail me off-list and I'll include them.
This list is now available here as well:
http://www.peepingdarklord.com/fedoralist/
for those who want to refer back to it easily.
Now, on to the good stuff! ;)

***WinXP Dual boot problems***
So you've installed Fedora Core 2 and now you can't boot into Windows
XP...STOP RIGHT THERE! Quit playing with that partition table. Go here
for the fix:

Update to a later kernel package, eg, from
http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/RPMS.kernel/
Use rpm -i to install the kernel package, then edit /boot/grub/grub.conf
to
set default=0 and reboot into the new kernel

Using FC2 in a production environment, or thinking about doing so? Just
a little bit of advice from http://fedora.redhat.com/ :
"The Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open
source project. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may
eventually make its way into Red Hat products. It is not a supported
product of Red Hat, Inc."
Please consider those 3 sentences carefully.

For other problem fixes/information, please go to the Unofficial FAQ.
Trust me, the answer is probably there. If it's not, there will most
likely be a link to it:

Here's the link to the Archive for this list:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/
You can try the search feature at the top of that page, but it's been
known to be flaky at times. If you have problems there, go to:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fedora-list&r=1&w=2
That's an alternate site for the fedora-list archives and has a working
search engine.
_______________________________________________________________________
Try Google:
http://www.google.com/
-or-
http://www.google.com/linux
Slap a string in there with your error message (or part of it) and see
if anyone else has had the problem.
_______________________________________________________________________
If you can't find an answer to your problem with any of those steps
above, post here at fedora-list(a)redhat.com. But BEFORE YOU DO THAT- two
things that will get you mighty quick answers.
The first is Netiquette:
-Don't top-post. Please put your reply *below* the reply of the person
that posted before you.
-Cut irrelevant text from the post before yours. It's polite to indicate
this in some way.
-Don't post in HTML, use plain text as some folks' mail readers don't
read HTML format.
The second is to include the following information about your problem:
-A descriptive subject title. This will spare folks who don't have
advice from spending the time reading your note, and will single out
those who do. It will also be a great help to those who come after you
with the same problem.
-Hardware specs of your machine: motherboard, CPU, video card, ethernet
card, etc...
-Software info: Kernel version, Window manager.
-Error messages.
-Steps you took that got you to this error.

Fedora Extras RSS
by Atul Chitnis
Whom does one contact about the Fedora Extras RSS feed offered from the site?
It is really useless as a resource, since it does not actually tell us
anything about new releases. And there seems to be no other RSS
resource that I am aware of that can replace it.
The consequence of this is that unlike Fedora Updates (which address
updates of the Core OS), I have no way of discovering new Fedora
Extras releases, which is a pity, given the amount of hard work going
into the extras.

REV drive as backup corrupted....
by Bob Hillegas
Is anyone using a REV drive under Fedora Core 2 as a backup device?
I just installed my internal scsi REV drive and tested writing to it.
Everything looked great. Then I tried to backup about 5 gigs of data to
it using rsync -auR /home/ /mnt/rev/.
The copy started but when I came back 5 hours later it had stalled my
system to a crawl, exhausted most of my 1 gig of memory.
I reset the system and decided to erase the drive and start over. Using
mkudffs from udftools-1.0.0b3.tar.gz, I issued the command:
mkudffs /dev/scd0
I get logged several times:
Oct 2 22:00:16 north kernel: Current sr0: sense key Medium Error
Oct 2 22:00:16 north kernel: Additional sense: Medium format corrupted
Oct 2 22:00:16 north kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Oct 2 22:00:16 north kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
Oct 2 22:00:16 north kernel: scsi2: ERROR on channel 0, id 12, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00
The kernel is 2.6.8-1.521smp Fedora Core 2.
Any suggestions as to how to revive the disk?
Recommended backup procedures, current limitations?
I will work with anyone who needs some experimentation to resolve the issue. I do have other disks I can use.
Thanks, BobH

Same here. I recompiled the NVIDIA driver and all is well.

xcdroast
by Lonnie Cumberland
Hello All,
I need to burn an iso image but cannot seem to locate where in xcdroast
to specify the iso image file? I have found that "cdrecord -scanbus"
only sees my SCSI drives an not my IDE CDROM burner as well.
Does Fedora 2 have another applicaiton that is easier to use to burn CD
iso images?
Thanks

using ant with jdk 1.5.0 on FC2/3t2
by Marius Andreiana
Hi
I'm trying to compile an application using ant.
Installed jdk 1.5.0 from sun, set JAVA_HOME and
replaced /etc/alternatives:
[root@marte alternatives]# l j*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Oct 3 15:38 jar -
> /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/bin/jar
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Oct 3 15:38 java -
> /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Oct 3 15:38 javac -
> /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/bin/javac
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Oct 3 15:38 javadoc -
> /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/bin/javadoc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Oct 3 15:38 javah -
> /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/bin/javah
Also set JAVA_HOME in /etc/ant.conf
However, ant insists on using ecj although it's not referenced in
build.xml:
Apache Ant version 1.5.2 compiled on June 23 2004
Buildfile: build.xml
Detected Java version: 1.4 in: /usr
Detected OS: Linux
file:/my/deja_vu/2compile/ofbiz/base/build.xml:83: Error starting ecj
compiler
Please help.

Java 5
by Mark Haney
Has anyone installed the latest and greatest JRE? I just did and found
that the RPM package installed, I did an upgrade instead of an install,
but I don't see any files for it and it didn't seem to upgrade
anything. Should I blow the existing version away (1.4.2) and install
1.5 fresh?

apt-get problem
by Reg Clemens
Ive used apt-get in the past, but not recently.
I maintain a local copy of the fedora2 archive, and do a
genbasedir $TOP os updates
after each update.
my /etc/apt/sources.list file has the line
rpm ftp://orion apt/fedora2/ updates
in it, which was the only uncommented line in the past.
So, Im missing something, as now I get the error message:
[reg@orion apt]$ apt-get update
Fetching list of repositories/mirrors...
/var/state/apt/mirrors.list.new: Permission denied
E: Failed to fetch mirror list file:
What is this trying to tell me?

I hate to answer my own questions, but...
What its trying to tell me it that it is a silly program, and easily
confused.
The above data line in /etc/apt/sources SHOULD read
rpm ftp://orion apt/fedora2 updates
(sigh). The extra '/' at the end of the file-spec is what was
causing the error message (and termination)
