RE: hoax or bad taste joke by Redhat's CEO?

See my previous post, but they didn't say that linux was not ready for the
desktop market, just the consumer market.
They will still be supporting educational use.

I've been saying this for a while too, but as both a RedHat stockholder and
administrator, I don't like to see this one bit. Once installed, the
"basics" of computer use are there and VERY easy to use. For a true
computer newbie, such as our elementary age kids, there is nothing to
"unlearn". A perfect canvas to build the future of desktop Linux. I think
RedHat missed on this one and apparently I'm not alone. To see this news on
the same day as the SuSe\Novell announcement sent the stock down sharply.
Is anyone listening?

BitTorrent Questions
by Justin L Croonenberghs
Hey all, just a quick question, if I may:
Is there a BitTorrent download available for the current beta's ISO
images? I typically have bad luck with FTP downloads, being behind a
firewall and all....

That is a good article, but, there is more detail in the direct Quicken
interface to the bank than online banking provides. I'll give it some
thought.

Hey, I wasn't asking for a free program, just any program. Macromedia won't
write it, Quicken won't write it. How could I possibly have the resources
to meet with the bank, get transaction download specs, etc. I'll pay for
Quicken for Linux, but I don't have the time to write that. I'm just
pointing out that RH9 is not good enough on the internet front even
(especially) for kids.

RE: Matthew Szulik is Stupid
by Cannon, Andrew
I have to take issue with this posting. Nowhere in the interview (the one
I've read anyway), does Matt Szulik say that linux is not ready for the
desktop. He says that the consumer market is not ready for Linux, and it
isn't. How easy do sysadmins find adding new hardware to linux? How easy is
it to get the 3D rendering on an NVidia FX graphics card in linux?
To quote the ZDnet article: Matthew Szulik, chief executive of Linux vendor
Red Hat, said on Monday that although Linux is capable of exceeding
expectations for corporate users, home users should stick with Windows: "I
would say that for the consumer market place, Windows probably continues to
be the right product line," he said. "I would argue that from the
device-driver standpoint and perhaps some of the other traditional
functionality, for that classic consumer purchaser, it is my view that
(Linux) technology needs to mature a little bit more."
Where in there does he say that linux is not ready for the desktop?
Let's stop and think about this before blowing our collective top.
Where does Red Hat get most of it's revenue from? Not the consumer
certainly. (How many of us actually buy our Red Hat CDs?) The Enterprise is
where Red Hat are making their money. It makes sense to concentrate on the
Enterprise market.
Again from ZDnet: However, Szulik expects Linux to be ready in a couple of
years after it has had time to mature. In the mean time, he is adamant that
corporate users would be surprised by how much the operating system has to
offer. "Consumers want USB drivers and digital camera support; but for the
enterprise desktop, that is a little bit different -- that area is ripe," he
said. "We think that the enterprise desktop market place is much more
strategic and has buyers whose needs we can exceed."
So he is not saying that RH is deserting the desktop market, just the home
consumer. How many home consumers have got the time to install a second OS
that doesn't play the games they want to play, needs lots of tweaking to get
their printer to work, and will cost them money? Yes Windows is cr*p, but it
IS easy to use for the average home user.
Just my 2p.

I think Matthew Szulik is a total moron. He should not have said those
things
about Linux not being ready for the desktop. I don't care if you think he is
right or wrong, he just should not have said something like that.
What a stupid moron.
Oh, and Redhat stock has dropped like 30% in value in the past two days.
Good going Stuplik.
Oh, and I am going to be selling my RHAT stock now, because the CEO has his
head lodged up his butt.

Hi,
I have problems with the Package System.
I need to install the kernel source because of the NVIDIA drivers.
After selecting the needed package and click on update the window with
"blalabla need CD-ROM number 3" appears but the right CD is in the
drive. This window comes as often I click on OK.
Is this error known? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Is there an announcement list as well?
by Christian Schlaefcke
Hi Folks,
I´m running RH9 at the moment and folled the news about RH´s ambition to
outsource the community-edition of the distribution to the fedora project.
At the moment my system is stable and running well but I also want to
follow the development within the fedora project. On the RH site I just
found this mailing list and a developers mailing list. Because I don´t
want to read all the stuff in this list (although it is interesting most
of the time), I wonder if there is an announcement-only list for this
project?
Thank you for any information!
Regards,
Chris

What about BootSplash?
by Antti Aspinen
http://www.bootsplash.org/
Can you gyes get that supported by Fedora Linux-kernel ?
That would be cool "eye-candy" and by the way SuSE supports it already.
I wanted couple years ago that RedHat should add that to their system.
Is it possible to get it finaly to fedora?
