Grub and Plymouth
by Christopher David Desjardins
Hi,
I have a couple of questions regarding grub and plymouth and whether
what I'm seeing may or may not be a bug.
First, when I boot my laptop I am usually greeted by a GRUB menu with a
background image, this is not the case in F10. Instead, my laptop goes
automatically into booting from a blank screen. Then I get a couple of
messages and then plymouth starts. Is this normal or should I get the
usual GRUB menu with the count down allowing me to select kernels?
Note: this laptop is only running F10 it's not a dual boot or anything
strange.
Second, when plymouth starts my screen is black except for a progress
bar, which is doesn't progress smoothly and changes a few colours with
the words Fedora 9.92 in the lower right hand corner. However, the
progress bar does eventual fill out though it still flickers with
different colours. I have an intel 945 video chip.
Thanks!

Testers - Reports against PulseAudio ( PA )
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
When we held the test day on 9.Okt, we put together bunch of tips
related to PA ( see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/2008-10-09 )
Pay very good attention to the bug report section
if followed it will avoid bugs being set to NEEDINFO status.
*
*These are the highlights...
*
General Debugging tips.
Start by adding your user to the pulse-rt group. *
/su -c '/usr/sbin/usermod -a -G pulse-rt <username>'/
*You will need to logout and in again for it to take effect! *
*Then kill PA. *
/pulseaudio -k/
*You do this as a regular user not root!*
*Start pulseaudio verbose mode *
/pulseaudio -vvvv/
*Ensure the volume is up and unmuted using either:*
/
alsamixer
pavucontrol
//
alsamixer -c0 (to bypass PA) /
*
Check if there are any */$HOME/.asoundrc*/*' files present that might be
customizing your sound preferences?*
*Check if there are any sound-related messages present in
*/var/log/messages* or */dmesg /*
When filing the bug report....*
*Include the */URL/* generated by *
/http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-driver.git;a=blob_plain;f=utils/alsa-info.sh
/
/
su -c 'smoltSendProfile -a'/
*Include output of.. *
/
aplay -L/
/pulseaudio -vvvv /
"ls" *inside of* "/pacmd/"
*
If you found CPU load related issues, please include oprofile dumps in
your bug report. *
/See the cheat sheet: http://oprofile.sourceforge.net/docs//
*
For crashes include a full backtrace. *

Ps.
There will be another test day held on the 16th where we will be
focusing our testing
effort against Better lirc support and Security Audit.

Yum upgrade vs preupgrade - readahead etc
by Jonathan Roberts
Hi all,
After yum upgrading my way to F10 from F9, the experience as already
reported was pretty painless. The only problem is that some packages,
key to Fedora 10 features, do not get picked up with the update. e.g.
readahead, and grub doesn't seem to have been updated either.
A few questions:
* Would the same problem occur if I'd used preupgrade?
* How can identify missing packages/settings and add them to my
current Fedora installation?
* Should this be considered a bug?
Kindly,
Jon

F-10 snap2 X server fails to find keyboard or mouse
by Robert Nichols
Trying F-10 snap2 on my "workhorse" machine:
Motherboard: Asus P4S800
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz
Firstboot tries to run in graphical mode at the appropriate display
resolution (1280x1024), but the X server fails to find either the
AT keyboard or PS/2 mouse. That leaves only the power switch and
reset button as the only functional inputs. When I look at
firstbootX.log I see:
(II) Cannot locate a core pointer device.
(II) Cannot locate a core keyboard device.
(II) The server relies on HAL to provide the list of input devices.
If no devices become available, reconfigure HAL or disable AllowEmptyInput.
I don't know enough about HAL to have any clue about how to proceed.

f9 gnome auto login questions
by Skunk Worx
This is a post I made yesterday to the fedora-list. There have been no
replies yet. I'm hoping someone here can give me a clue on how to
disable gnome "User Switching" or offer opinions on the following. The
behavior is a little unsettling.
TIA,
John
----
Here's my example usage :
1) Setup auto login :
edit :
/etc/gdm/custom.conf
...
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=my_uname
2) Restart to runlevel 5, experience autologin as "my_uname".
3) Activate System->Lockscreen menu option.
(screen saver starts)
Note : at this point, I expect my screen to be password protected.
4) Wiggle mouse for authentication dialog. Don't enter password; click
the "Switch User" button.
Try # 1 : Get directly to desktop, no password needed.
5) Repeat steps 3,4.
Try # 2 : Get login greeter on try #2. Select "Automatic Login" user,
get directly to desktop, no password needed.
6) Attempt to disable the "Switch User" button :
# gconf-editor
apps->gnome-screensaver->user_switch_enabled=false
desktop->gnome->disable_user_switching=true
Note : at this point, I expect user switching to be disabled.
7) Restart to runlevel 5. Same behavior; user switching is still enabled
and exhibits the same "no password" behavior of steps 3-5.
Questions :
-----------
Is it expected that once autologin is enabled, access to that account is
password free, even though the locking screensaver is activated?
Is there a way to actually disable the switch user button in the
screensaver authentication dialog?

Snap2 KDE desktop crashes, konqueror can't resolve names
by Chuck Anderson
I'm testing the F10-Snap2-x86_64-Live-KDE image and have encountered
these two problems so far:
1. After booting up the live image without any network cable plugged
in, I started Web Browser (konqueror). This failed with a DNS error
page of course since I had no network connection yet. I plugged my
Ethernet cable in and NetworkManager got an address without problems.
>From konsole I was able to ping and ssh to IP addresses and DNS names
without problems. However, the open web browser still reported DNS
errors on every page I tried. Even closing konqueror and reopening it
again didn't clear the error.
2. Shortly after the above tests, I was typing in the terminal and the
entire desktop session crashed and sent me back to the KDM login.
I rebooted and verified that Konqueror worked correctly if I left the
network cable plugged in before logging in and launching the Web
Browser. However, the desktop crashed again in short order.
