NVIDIA Question
by David St.Clair
This may be a dumb question, but why can't Redhat distribute NVIDIA binary
drivers?
In NVIDIA's licence (http://www.nvidia.com/object/nv_swlicense.html) it
says:
"2.1.2 Linux Exception. Notwithstanding the foregoing terms of Section
2.1.1, SOFTWARE designed exclusively for use on the Linux operating system
may be
copied and redistributed, provided that the binary files thereof are not
modified in any
way (except for unzipping of compressed files)."
So, what's keeping RedHat from putting the drivers in the distribution? If
it's a GPL
thing, would it be easy to just download it during installation or at
least give the option to the user?
Thanks,

Mouse goes crazy
by Jonathan Villa
Ok, I have had Yarrow working well for a while now, but yesterday I
started experiencing some odd issues with my mouse. All of a sudden it
stops working correctly. The only thing that seems to fix is to kill X
and run mouse-test, then restart.
Any ideas?
Also, I have FC 1 running on a desktop which is hooked up to a KVM
switch. Whenever I go to another PC, and return, the same thing
happens, the mouse goes crazy.

I have the same symptoms...
rpcinfo says that nfs et.al. are running.
Something has changed in test 2, since the same PC running RH9
accesses that host just fine.

autoconf breakage on x86_64.
by Sam Varshavchik
I don't know the right way to fix this, but something is definitely broken;
and something needs to be fixed, one way or the other. The question is what
exactly needs to be fixed.
Consider something like this:
LIBS="-lresolv $LIBS"
AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC(res_query, AC_MSG_RESULT(yes), AC_MSG_RESULT(no))
Here's what happens on x86_64:
gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -I.. -I./.. conftest.c -lresolv >&5
/tmp/ccW7EeDX.o(.text+0x7): In function `main':
/home/mrsam/src/courier/authlib/configure:5160: undefined reference to
`res_query'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:5147: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
[ blah blah blah ]
| /* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
| builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
| char res_query ();
| int
| main ()
| {
| res_query ();
| ;
| return 0;
| }
The same exact test on FC1 x86 will work.
The reason appears to be that you have to #include <resolv.conf> on x86_64
in order to succesfully pull res_query() out of libresolv.so. You don't
need to do this on x86, and the test program generated by AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC
does not include any headers, but uses a manual prototype.
So, what now?

[announce] Fedora community SCIM input survey
by Jens-Ulrik Petersen
The Fedora I18N Team invites you kindly to participate in a survey
to provide feedback on the SCIM (Simple Common Input Method [1])
platform for Asian language input. Packages are available in Fedora Core
Development and Fedora Extras, and also for RHEL 4.
The survey is available now at
https://www.keysurvey.com/survey/80474/2da7/ [2]
where more details can be found including package installation instructions.
The survey has been translated into the following languages: Bengali, Chinese,
Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Punjabi.
The goal of the survey is to find out what users see as the main strengths
and weaknesses of SCIM to help provide focus on the most important
improvements needed from the point of view of users.
The survey will run until the end of Friday 25th November, UTC.
We hope to receive lots of responses from a wide part of the community.
A summary of the results will be made available publicly later.
Thank you for your time. And special thanks to the SCIM developers
and community for creating SCIM.

Up2date replacement
by Don Springall
Since the Up2date icon has disappeared off the desktop I assume Fedora is
going with some other standard way of doing updates.
I currently find that updating in fedora is a hit and miss proposition and
I do not trust any of them. I ran yumex this morning and it reports nothing
to update. The same with pup. I run up2date and it finds updates.
Obliviously yumex and pup decided to use some not uptodate mirror. I am
starting to believe that YUMEX uses some random number generator to pick
which mirror it uses. At least with Up2date it tells you what channel it is
starting with. Does pup and YUMEX use --obsoletes by default ? Who knows !
Up2date lets you decide to install the updates or not after everything is
downloaded so you can do that later if you have run out of time. I believe
RPM used to have a rollback option but that seems to have been dropped from
the latest documentation.
What I am getting at is that the current list of alternatives to up2date
while greatly improved in some areas still needs improvement and has
regressed in some ways. Compared to the old up2date it is easier to add
mirrors to alternate sites like LVN in YUM, Yum tries another mirror if the
current one fails and Yum makes resolving dependencies a lot easier.
In Microsoft land the system keeps a list of patches so you can delete them
if they fail, has a rollback facility for service packs, has a rollback
facility for device drivers in device manager if your new driver sucks,
never seems to have broken dependencies and has one central site so you
don't have to worry that the mirror is up to date or not. Microsoft updates
do break you box sometimes but not more often than "rawhide" updates.
This is one area that I think REDHAT should spend a lot more development
dollars on. It would also help if there were more groups for "group update"
ie one for Gnome, KDE, Openoffice and Eclipse etc if yum and yumex are the
direction things are going. Please take PUP out back and beat it to death
with a big stick. BAD DOG !
